What makes you say that?

Nah, it was a straight swap with Matic. Lingard was leading the line, guess some of you had trouble spotting him without the afro.

He is not a DM in such a system. His passing isnt good enough, he is t good enough in carrying the ball and he isnt mobile enough. Matic is better in every aspect. Plus he cant close down quickly enough and gives away silly fouls.

I saw him playing upfront and that was my reaction. Even some other posters mentioned it in the matchday thread. I can always go back and look again as i recorded the game. Maybe im wrong
Preconceived negativity I imagine.

There's a lot of selective memory involved when it comes to Fellaini, you get people in here saying he can't play DM when he's done well in that postion from time to time, like in a few games earlier this season.

Genuinely cannot believe we were stupid enough to offer this guy terms until 2020 with the additional option of an extra year, utterly stupid, thanks Mourinho. If anyone points to Mourinho not being backed just take a look at the way him and Fellaini bent the board over a barrell in public to get this clown an extension.

Some people are stuck in the Moyes age tbf. Will never change their mind on Fella eventhough they claim they would like to. The guy has saved our ass a good couple of times in the darkest times and is a good sguad option. Happy to have him in the mix, even if he's not suited to play the key role in the first team now.

Do people really think this guy is a good option for a system like the one we played against Cardiff? I desagree.

1) he's no near good enough to be a defensive midefielder, he has no passing quality nor positional intelligence to play such a role in a big team.

2) he's not decisive enough to play center forward as a plan B. How many times in his 5 seasons at United did he come in and change a game? With Ole and Chicharito you were almost sure they'll score when they came in, reason why they became key components in the team.

3)Big teams don't sub an attacker or midfielder to put a big man to play long ball in a desperate attempt for a gaol, what they do is push one CB forward to provide some presence. Fellaini as a plan B is not a good option for a big club like United.

We should sell at the 1st opportunity, sometimes it's better to admit our mistakes and correct them instead of hoping for average players to show some kind of positivity. Every player has his use, but not every quality is good enough for a big club.

I don't know why we signed him in the first place, or why Van Gaal or Mourinho liked him, so definitely have no idea if Ole will like him - but I hope not.

He has been picked by every manager since moving here. He plays well for Belgium as well.

Oh I agree you summed him up perfectly

Position for a DM? not up to speed

Prone to giving away fouls when our game is looking towards clever position, the DM needs that and fellaini cannot run that position, he’s going to be giving away cheap fouls, matic needs replacing but he is smart in that position now he knows he got legs around him.

Passing range? He doesn’t have that, makes him poor has a DM, matic is better but we will need to upgrade over matic and fellaini

He needs to be more mobile, he doesn’t have that mobility. He’s not going to be even having a sniff in those pogba and Herrera positions because he doesn’t have the creative, the passing, the mobility to press in the final third, ole knows the likes of pogba, Herrera and Fred hopefully will be doing that

The positivity? When we made the subs against Cardiff, ole subbed matic for fellaini, so atleast in the DM position it’s either matic or fellaini who will play and not together, which Jose some how thought that was a good idea playing both.

194cm DM, can play as CF, this is why Mourinho extending his contract. In the market, this kind of player cost 30m-40m, definitely more than Matic.

Genuinely baffled why people think he's still a good option for us. If he was as half as effective as people think he is then every single team would have a Fellaini type player. He also would have had a lot more options when he tried to hold us to ransom this summer.

Saying the past 3 managers have used him isn't exactly a great point considering we underperformed under all 3 and also played dire football under all 3. Not to mention everytime he's on the pitch we stop trying to play football and just resort to aimlessly hoofing it. Needs moving on ASAP.

Ole seems to want to rotate him with Matic. He's gonna start against Huddersfield and people will lose their shit again :D. Some really got irrational hatred toward Fellaini. If you hate him because he plays badly then your problem is with the managers because they use him, and he always gives his best every time he steps into the field. Really you can't ask more of him.

He will have his use under Ole. How carefully he follows a coach's instruction on the pitch makes him a valuable player for any manager.

Ole will like him as well. Whether he will be used as much as or the same way as Jose used him is a different matter though.

The only use I see for him in this present team is to be introduced in the last 10 minutes to shore up the defense. He will be useful in defending set pieces and corners.

People forgot how LVG used him in his first season in that short period where we were unplayable. Fellaini was vital along with Carrick in all those games. He was not there just to knock the ball down. His short passing in tight spaces up field is a bit underrated.

His reputation got worse after Jose started to use him as a tree man. He was in fact getting a bit more praises before that.

That's exactly how he was used. If I recall corectly, he was using him as a 8 in a midfield 3 to beat the pressing of teams like Liverpool by bypassing the miedfield by lunching long ball to Fellaini. That system showed its limitations when I think we played Everton who knew how to nullify it by marking Fellaini and unsetled him every time De Gea kicked the ball and Fellaini became completely useless, reason why LVG abandoned it the following season.

Like I said, every player has his qualities, but not every quality is good enough for a big team. Andy Carrol, Benteke, Mandzukic were quality players, but those qualities were not good enough for Liverpool and Bayern respectivly. Fellaini should be nowhere near a team with great ambitions.

He was there to knock the ball down AND create our attacking play on the left side. Very different from the way Jose used him in general where he got so much shites from fans for doing what the manager asked him to.

I agree that he would never be a first choice for a team like United.

To be fair, he was not for most of his career here anyway. No one can deny that he has some different ability than the rest of our midfielders and he can be useful for some certain situations. The fact that he follows manager's instruction exactly on the pitch might even improve his chances in Ole's system while showing he could do much more than what Jose asked him to.

Nice to see we can hold out a win without the need for the big man and give youth a chance instead

Will have his uses going forward but I hope we get less and less dependent on him in the future

Funny you say that because had he been on, we may not have conceded. He is great defending set pieces and its the reason why we need a commanding centre back in the summer.

Guess you're right about we not conceding had he been on but I'd go for a commanding center back as the solution rather than continuously relying on him for that

Like I said, I hope we reduce our dependency on him going forward

I’ve nothing against the bloke. He’s poured his heart and soul into the club and been a very important player in some very shit seasons. That’s done now though hopefully. He just isn’t a player that is up to the standard required of how we SHOULD be playing. Although I appreciate the application he showed when we played the way we did.

Time to move on...the fellaini age is over

Rumor going around that he'll be shipped off in summer to Turkey. Please invisible man in the sky let this happen! If he plays against Bournemouth it'll probably be another cameo. I think Pererira will get a chance instead

I suspect he doesn't fit into the way Solskjear sees the team going forward, he's been on the bench a few times but I honestly think the midfield quartet of Matic, Pogba, Fred & Herrera are well ahead of him.

He will start against Reading but I don't see him getting much starting time between now and the end of the season.

Yeap,I think he will feature too against Reading.

Fellaini is an awful defensive midfielder, and that's where he gets played more often than not when he starts. When he comes on as a sub (plan B), we play to his strengths and play him further forward where he can affect the play.

He's a great Plan B, and we will no doubt need him as the season goes on. We will have games where our attack just doesn't work and he can make an impact.

It does seem like Ole doesnt want to use him if at all possible. Hopefully that means he'll be gone in the summer - nothing against him, but he's not what we should be aiming for. Would love to see Pereira get his minutes from now until May but I do suspect he'll feature in some shape or form in both of our next games. I can see the Newcastle game being quite ugly and we might need his physicality late on.

I like Fellaini and wish him all the best but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was shipped off in January or the summer.

Ole clearly doesn’t see him as a priority. He still has his uses though. So I would be happy to see him stay on if he’s happy to be a squad player.

Let's be honest, he should have never been anywhere near our club. He's a limited footballer who has no place in a team that plays quick, fluid attacking football.

I'll agree that he has been useful, but that's only because we've had poor managers who have played terrible football. Now we actually play some decent stuff that will hopefully only get better, he has no place here. In the summer I hope it's a case of thanks for the effort and good bye.

Shouldnt be anywhere near the team or the club, and he wont be while we are trying to actually play football.

Incredibly limited player who we should have shown the door in the summer.

LVG and Mou kept him as "he did a job" which isn't right. I don't like the idea of keeping players for "doing a job" - it's overly pragmatic, when instead we should be picking players that fit the style of football we want to play. Don't get me wrong, he's been very effective at his role, but he shouldn't have had a role in the first place.

I remember him in the form of his life in LVG's first season, and even then it wasn't pretty. I don't mind if he stays, but we shouldn't need a player to "do a job"

This guy doesn't excite me one bit, I don't even know his best uses unless we want to revert back to hoof ball! God forbid! so IMO he has no place in this our current setup, I'd rather we lose playing exciting football with Pogba, Martial, Sanchez Rashford/Lingard attacking the oppo defense than play hoof it to Mr Fellaini

Another mistake by Mourinho to give him a new contract. The fact that he's barely played under Solskjaer says everything.

He can't play as a defensive midfielder because his positioning is awful and undisciplined. He'd leave the midfield wide open and he doesn't have the technique to play anywhere else.

I'd be annoyed if he starts against Reading.

The young lads, should they play, would lack service.

I feel for him tbh. I think it's an indictment of our club that at times, we have looked clueless on how to attack when he wasn't on the pitch.
Will be 32 this summer. I think it's time to move him on. In fact, I'd move him on this window if possible. He should not be taking minutes from people like Gomes or Garner.

I fully expect to see him start vs Reading but I'd prefer to see Pereria and Fred, even McTominay. I keep hoping the Turkish deal will happen this month.

Don’t feel sorry for him remotely, he should never of been at the club for this long.

Shouldn't play against Reading or for the club ever again. Clearly has no future here and before anyone comes and says he might under the new manager - if the new manager has a place for Fellaini in the team then we've once again recruited poorly.

Should be booted out the door in January.

Hope he leaves ASAP. Nothing against him but he is nowhere near good enough for this club. He is the symbol of our awful period from Moyes til the moment Jose got sacked. Just let him go and we’ll move on... and up!

As long as he is used in specific circumstances as an impact player and isn't taking opportunities away from talented youngsters there's always room for him in the squad. He's a unique option off the bench and one that few teams have an effective counter to.

It was unnecessary to extend his contract, but now we should be looking to sell him. Maybe get 10m for him? Not a disaster if we don't but then I hope we manage his game time. He should only be used as a substitute DM at the end of games or as a striker if we need an extra man in the box for that last minute goal. He shouldn't be taking opportunities away from Fred, Andreas and Gomes etc.
