Didn't look 100 % sharp today. Maybe it was instructions, but he seemed a bit lazy in the second half not chasing the ball and possible runs as he can do.

Very difficult game to play though
Thought he did a great job defensively covering for Young many times. Very good performance for me.

Offensively he offered nothing, even in the first half when the game was in balance, that should not be considered a very good performance.

Laziness is not a criticism I will level against him this game. Great work ethic today, and a very mature performance from him.

Multitask performances will make him a truly complete footballer.

His free kick taking is also good trait to have.

Who gives a shit? He worked his ass off and we kept a clean sheet.

average performance. his FK was awesome tough, just unlucky. well, he played 90 minutes so Jose should rest him and choose Martial for next match.

He is to man mark Cedric. He is not supposed to stay loose running in behind without us gaining the edge in possession like the other game. Can be improved, but not the a bad performance by any mean.

Rashford thrives against top of the league teams who press and dont sit as deep as lower sides. That way he plays to his strengths, which is getting in behind the defence and exploiting the opponents high defensive line.

Today Southampton sat quite deep and defended well when we had the ball so there was hardly any room or space in behind for Rashford to accelerate into.

Martial would of been more suited today but he lacks the defensive discipline which Rashford excelled tremendously today.

A good workman’s like performance from him.

Average first half, seems to be struggling a little now.
Played 2 days ago. Rashford is preferred over Martial because he has more awareness of what's going on around him and his all around game is more developed. Martial has better natural skills so potentially a higher ceiling but both will be phenomenal.

Who cares if an attacker did nothing in attack? :wenger:
This board has become a joke. Judging attacking players performances has devolved to how much defensive work they can put in rather than their offensive prowess.

Mental gymnastic at their finest.

This is completely false.

Won't be long before "don't fix what isn't broken" becomes popular again.

We can't win every game 4-0. Sometimes what the team needs is a performance like he had today. Sure, he could have done more offensively but the most important thing must surely be winning the game?

You guys must be livid with Mata and Mkhi..

This is where you guys are getting things upside down. As an attacker, a player will or should always be judged from his attacking input first and foremost and if it comes with good defensive capabilities as well than even better.

So if an attacker had an anonymous game offensively despite doing great defensive work, he'll be rated average and rightly so.

Around 2:25.

That's the issue. If that's the only compliment we can give to our attacking players, then there's an issue in my eyes. Our attackers are supposed to occupy their defenders rather than be occupied by them.

It seems like the roles have reversed under José. I always thought the FB was the defensive who was to worry about the offensive job of the attacker but now it's the other way round. It's almost like Cedric is a better attacker and Rashford is the better defender.
No slight on Rashford though, it's the damn tactical instruction.

Marcus was PHENOMENAL.

That's what Jose said. The whole team was pinned back. Any player would find it difficult to break from so deep. This game will have further validated Rashford's place in the team for Jose. Wonderful talent.

It's somewhat strange to see how much praise he gets for pretty much offering sweet feck all apart from trying to defend alongside Young, and it's not like he did that much. His performance against Everton was horrible at best, and his first half against Southampton was barely any better.

If the main purpose of the left winger is to defend for the majority of the match, we might as well play Young and Blind together.

I'm pragmatic and so is our coach, team before the individual and result before entertaining football. This match demanded a different performance from Marcus. We won't dominate every match (i'd like that a lot, just won't happen) and he won't be able to affect the game the way we all want him too, in the final third. I'm just saying the lad did what was needed of him so he deserves praise for it.

Same things as i mentioned above but also.. The lad has 5 goals and 2 assists in 9 appearances this season. That is damn impressive.

I do completely understand you guyses point of view, though.

We weren't pinned back at all for most of the game and our attackers (excluding Lukaku) still did feck all. You'd think we were playing Pep's Barca the way people are talking about how we were dominated.

First half, where he was playing as an attacker, he wasn't that good. Second half, where he was playing Left Back, he was amazing.

Dayumyum... that astonishing backtracking of his which sends a huge "I got you bro #wink" to all our defenders, the predatory instinct to creep up from behind anyone within a 10 metre radius and snatch the ball away with a cobra tackle, the sensual steaming perspiration dripping from his face and shirt from all that lovely workrate he gives the appreciating fans and the mesmerising illusion of attacking intent and threat he poses going forward to dumbfound/confuse the opponent defenders into thinking all that running around might lead to something dangerous putting them on defcon 1...

I think he's won me over. THIS is the modern day super attacker.

At this rate the kid will probably end up as a full back just like Valencia and Young or Diouf at Stoke. Mourinho already has priors in turning attackers to cloggers.

Damn right. Loved when he won a header in the box then chased after it to the half way line and nearly won that as well. Brilliant work rate.

You seem to almost be dismissing attacking threat as less important than defensive capabilities from attacking players in order for a team to be successful.

And Rashford was poor in the first half when the game was balanced and him along with Miki kept screwing up any chance of good counterattacking plays with losing or over hitting the ball.

The second half we didn't get much of the ball thus ended up defending the entire half. He did well defensively yet he was poor offensively going forward in the first half when we had much of the ball.

So how would you rate such attacking player after giving you such performance?

If that is what you take out of this then there is no point discussing it further.

Exactly. The first half the play was more balanced and opportunities where there to go at Southampton which we tried but aside from Lukaku, every single other attackers behind him were poor.

Mata anonymous, Mkhi wasteful while Rashford was wasteful as well as anonymous.

Horshit attacking sense, decent defensively. Poor game from him today. Mourinho needs to give a run of games to martial to keep fire in rashfords ass burning.

If he's being valued defensively (and let's not lie, he's good at it) why not play him as a left mid in a 3-4-3? That way the LCB can cover him and we get to see him and martial on the left side together

Thought he looked drunk vs Everton and was equally poor going forward today. Good work defensively though and I guess that's what matters in a Jose team.

Think he put in a great shift second half. First half could have done a bit better offensively, although he was better than Mata and Mkhitaryan.

Little reason why he won't become a top player in my eyes. He seems obsessed with the game.

He always looks a little drunk to me. His success rate of simply keeping the ball after dribbling (let alone making use of it) must be less than 20%.
