Marcelo Bielsa on ManUtd style of play - "The more simple the football is, the better it is.

Ok

I would say the first one was winnable and Fergie got his tactics wrong.
What do you think he should have done different that would have made a difference? I know many say he got his tactics wrong but never explain how. Fergie himself said he got his tactics wrong and he knew what to do in 2011 and he got hammered again.

I find alot of the perceived tactical complexity in modern day football consists mostly of narratives paddled by the media and pundits (former players who have been somewhat indoctrinated into the process).

The more intrigue and mystifying complexity, the more clicks they receive and papers they sell.

I suppose complexity refers more to how long it takes to get all the players to know how to play the coach's approach. Cause in the end, football tactics never look very complicated on the actual pitch; nothing like American Football for example. But some styles have lots of triggers (like a high prsss) or require lots of positional awareness (like tiki taka). That doesn't look complex in the match (smooth, rather), but I suppose it's a lot more work in training than most other approaches.

I need to go back and watch but I think at the time I thought it would have been a better match up for us offensively if we had put Rooney through the middle and Ronaldo on the left. As it was we had Rooney going against Puyol, I think Ronaldo would have caused him trouble at right back, and Rooney through the middle would be less neutered. Also when we were pushing for a goal, Giggs moved up field closer to Ronaldo than Rooney was-again that is my memory, I might have to rewatch, but I thought it was a mistake at the time.

I also, personally, wanted Tevez to start over Park in a frobut I can see, with everything behind the scenes, why not.

Fergie can’t be blamed for us giving away an awful goal and Park failing to score what should have been a goal early on though. And the absence of Fletcher and Hargreaves (ha) were a big problem in a game like that.

I actually feel like ex players are a lot less into the detailed stuff than non players. Gary Neville maybe an exception but I feel like ex pros talk more in terms of “focus”, “effort”, “desire” whereas nerds in papers or on podcasts or Twitter focus on the complexity of things.

I always find it funny that Pep hates the term tiki taka and yet his name is practically synonymous with it in football

I agree. I think football quality is decent this season. Definitely not worse than under Fergie, if you exclude the times we had much better players (prime Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, van Persie).
The one year of Fergie and RVP this place was packed with complaints of zombie football. Revisionist history I guess!

If we have a manager that relies purely on players ability - all we need is 11 amazing players on the pitch at the time.

I never really saw what was wrong with that.
That was what Zidane had at Madrid and yet he was hailed as a SuperCoach.....it beats me.

By 2011, we were a lot weaker and Barca was even stronger at their best.we had lost Ronaldo and Tevez, and Giggs, Scholes, Carrick, Rio and VdS had declined noticeably. The Barca players had swapped Eto’o for Villa, Messi was shrewder, and the players could find each other blindfolded at that time.

The tactics weren’t so bad in 2009. Barca were a lot better team than in 2008, yet we got more of the game than in 08. Most people’s memory of the game is marred by the mistake that let Eto’o score against the run of play and United not exploiting similar opportunities with Park and Ronaldo - plus the narrative at the time that tiki taka possession was in itself domination.
