Manchester United Women | Squad recruitment underway

When will we start playing games?

I think the season starts on the 18/19 August, but I've not seen any kind of fixtures list on the FA WSL site (or even a date for the fixtures to appear!).

I know some women's teams are starting to announce their pre-season games - typically starting mid-July. I guess that means the squad will meet up early July sometime. I wouldn't be surprised if United delay announcing much until they can do the publicity launch as well.

I suspect we will go after some of our old "Regional Talent Club" (youth team) players, just as a matter of pride after losing them to our rivals. I think we'll also try and cash-in on some of the unhappiness we're hearing about at clubs like Liverpool (where lots of players are leaving) and Sunderland (who've lost their league status). Chelsea/City/Arsenal will obviously get first shot at anyone moving, but Casey's comments make me think that we are aiming high.

It might be that we don't sign any current England NT players but we're obviously creating a stir there as well. The fact it's even a topic for debate a year before the Women's World Cup is interesting.

Flipping Phil! He should tell them that it will enhance their international chances to come to us!

Maybe when we reach top tier league, we can target some US WNT players ...

Besides the obvious fans' favorite like Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe is also a huge United fan.

Interesting to read how most of the tier two managers they spoke to wished for United to have been placed directly into tier one. I think it’s better this way, though.

Also, Phil Neville saying he doesn’t recommend his England players to drop down from tier one to play for United, but it won’t necessarily hinder them in going to the world cup, is important.

Yes, I was struck by that as well. I thought we were playing nice with the other teams by not trying to queue jump. It sounds like some of the other clubs were less impressed. :smirk:

I think that's the FA's fault rather than ours though. The reorganisation allowed for up to 14 teams in WSL1 but they only approved 11 of the applicants. The Championship filled all its 12 places, and some teams who could/should have qualified for it didn't get in. Promotion and relegation etc was ignored, for a lot of teams the previous league season basically got written off. As someone commented on the FA site, "you wouldn't do it to the men."

Interestingly though, given that we chose to give ourselves some breathing space, we might meet some old rivals really early. The opening games of the season are in the WSL Continental Cup (that's Continental the tyre company not the continent). It starts with us playing in a group stage against other northern clubs. There are two northern groups. I don't think the draw has happened yet but (looking at previous years) there seems to be some kind of seeding so we'll be in a group with at least one of City, Liverpool or Everton.

Fanndís Friðriksdóttir is free after leaving Marseille. She'd be a top acquisition but I don't think she'd join unless there's decent money. Does anyone know what the players are getting paid?

Oddly enough I was just about to post about finances.

Summarising though, the top clubs like City are paying 30-40k or thereabouts/year typically. We don't know what United are paying, but it might not be far off, despite us being in the lower league. I suspect we'll focus on British or British-based players this year though.

Why the secrecy about the new recruits ?

I've searched high and low looking for any info since the team were first excepted into the League, but nothing, nadda

Maybe MUTV, one of the Sponsors, or the BBC have got something lined up where the players will introduce themselves, but I doubt it

Meanwhile City and Chelsea seem to be announcing a new signing every other day......

Those teams have been established for years though. Guess we've still got a lot of things to organise and set up first. The ManUtdWFC account hasn't tweeted yet and the Women's Team section of the official website is still bare bones.

I think that's part of it. The big clubs are still announcing. For every player that joins them, the chances are another one leaves, we're not (yet) at the front of the queue. Casey only got mentioned as our likely manager at the end of May, so while she may be confident about who she's got, a lot of their contracts may only just be becoming official.

I think we may well announce pretty much the whole squad in a single hit. It can't be kept under wraps much longer though. They'll be in pre-season training soon.

Manchester United are hopeful of signing an England international for their women's team next season.

The MEN previously revealed new United manager Casey Stoney has agreed deals for 17 players and sources say the club is eager to recruit 'a top young English player' in addition to a senior Lioness. United plan to announce their first raft of signings in July.

Stoney, who spent the last two years of her playing career at Liverpool, could acquire former teammates Martha Harris and Amy Turner after they were released by the Anfield club. United are set to make several Women's Super League 1 signings and pad the squad out with WSL 2 players and academy talents.

I'm obviously happy if we get one or two England internationals, but would it be wise for them to drop down to tier 2? Although Phil said he'll still watch any prospects from tier 2.

I'm guessing they'll get it all together and do a whole slew of photos and interviews and stuff.

They'll also ask a lot of the standard "tell us why United is awesome" questions that kind of annoy me.

Actually, the Women's team news home page is in place now and it does have a couple more articles. So they've got the skeleton ready for it as stories/official announcements do come through.

Yeah noticed they'd finally added a Women's section recently, and I get they've probably got priorities elsewhere, but hope they up their game with the player section once the Women's team squad is announced, Matej Kovar who joined United in January, and was the first choice for the 18s and also moved up to the 23s wasn't listed until a few days ago, and yet players that had left whilst the season was still going were still listed.

Two girls from Liverpool linked today, Martha Harris(23 ex Lincoln City) an England u23 International, and Amy Turner(26 Notts County) a full International last capped in 2015

They're never seemed much good on updates, they don't deal at all well with things like player loans or moves between levels. Maybe they'll do better with the women this year because they'll simply have 19 or 20 players to add in one hit.

I'm actually hoping the slow/missing updates and incomplete profiles in the old player sections were just symptoms of the old website being hard to maintain. I'm hoping the underlying databases/content management system works better on the new website and they've made it easier for the departments to add/change stuff. But then I'm always an optimist about that kind of stuff :wenger:

Back on the question of players and announcements, this may be a sign that we won't be seeing a lot of official news in the next few day. Hopefully she'll come home rested and ready to go.

Was wondering about the size of the squad with the Womens team playing a lot less fixtures than the Mens team, and noticed on the Man City official website(spending more time on there the last few weeks than is healthy )that they have 24 players registered, though i'd imagine with European football as well they'd have a larger than normal squad.

If the women have a pre-season game against the Army team on 5 July, it's likely there'll be a massive flurry of news about the players in about .... 10 days? :)

I imagine the quotes and stuff will have been done well in advance so doesn't need Casey to be around.

I had a glance at the websites of some WSL2 teams from last season and they've got in the region of 20-26 players.

Well the manager said, "These are the first 20 players ever in history to represent Manchester United Women's team on a professional level," and talked about bringing together 26/27 people (including the coaches etc) in one go.

One of the many things I don't know is how the 16+ group will be organised. There must be quite a few changes being made. At some point you'd expect that they'll become a resource that the first team can call on when they need them, whether to make up the numbers in training, or to supplement the squad when it needs it.

Yeah i'd imagine that is the norm. Just checked and apparently the clubs(in the WSL at least) can register up to 40 players which seems high, almost encouraging stockpiling.

How fantastic. I played the odd time for Southport Ladies when I was very young, I would have loved to think there was a chance of actually playing for United. I really hope we get a lot of home-grown talent in the team.

Hopefully there will be, eventually, saying that if any of the girls that had to leave the club at 16 and gone on to play International football at various age groups come back to United now there's a Senior team again it might happen straight away. And i'm sure Casey will have been on the phone to one or two of them already.

Always thought that was going to be the case. I can't see top players signing for a newly formed team.

When does the women's season start nobody seems to know, unless i have somehow missed it.

Wow, so Casey's assistant is ex Bristol City head coach.

"Our 2018/19 season begins on the weekend of 18 August with the opening round of group fixtures of the Continental Tyres Cup. The FA Women’s Super League & FA Women’s Championship fixtures commence weekend of 8 September."

From some account on Twitter, and I still couldn't find official sources.

Just seen this news. Willie is a former Hibernian ladies coach who done a great job with the Hibs ladies when he was in charge. My local team Hibernian have a very good exciting women’s team. Two of their best players - Kirsty Smith & Lizzie Arnot have both departed the club this week as they have been offered professional contracts by an unnamed English professional league side. Wonder if it is Man Utd due to the connection with Kirk? Both fantastic players.

Cheers, guess we will just have to wait for an official announcement.
