It really worries me that Young and Valencia are getting as much time as they are. I was hoping that this season we would see a clear out of deadwood in the squad and i considered Young and partially Valencia as just that. And i am even more surprised to see Young playing a wing back role, who would have thought Young would be the player LVG would transform into a new position?

Big night for Michael Keane, hope he can show off hes best and maybe be in contention for a place in the squad this season. He has done well with hes chances so far.

Other then that, i'm really looking forward to seeing Herrera against the likes of Modric and Alonso. Should be a good test for him. I believe he has what it takes. He has certainly showed in other games that he is gonna be an important player for us next season.

Should be a great game, bring it on!

To be fair, nobody knows what LvG is thinking. These are just friendlies and I'm sure he'd happily use them as a chance to really see how good the likes of Young and Valencia are against quality opponents.

We might get back from the tour and he decides to ship out 6 or 7 of these players, but he'd never say that in public. An awful lot can happen over the next few weeks.

And for those going on about how valuable their experience is, a whole lot of good their experience did last season, they provided nothing, maybe Evra at a push. Rio made things worse by leaking the damn line ups, experience can be valuable but those 3 didn't seem to put theirs to much use. It really didn't show on the pitch once.

I'm not really fussed about their quality either as all of them looked past it or bordering on the edge of being past it.

Agreed.

He referred to this as his first team as well, wanting them to get 60 minutes together.

The doom and gloom is very bizarre on here at times.

Young!!!!! ow no!!!!! he has had a decent pre-season and for a wing-back he is fine, can't see what all the drama is about tbh.

Fletch and Herrera can come fine with most teams in the world, plus with Mata/Rooney/Welbeck ahead of them i can see united scoring easily and with 5 at the back a clean sheet is not unimaginable!

My main worry is finding a decent river :smirk:

I want to see Michael Keane and Blackett against Madrid. Smalling's injury means that we'll probably see both of them, which is great news. If we don't sign any new defenders, the only positive outcome of it would be Blackett and M.Keane getting loads of games in the 3-5-2 formation.

Van Gaal already said that he likes both of them, so maybe they've shown enough to convince him that they have the right mentality and enough intelligence for their young age to actually make their mark in the first team this season.

I still think that we need at least one more center back though. We're obviously going to stick with this 3-5-2 formation, so we probably need more than 5 center backs when 3 of them will be starting games.

No matter what the next month brings (or doesn't) on the transfer front, I trust Van Gaal completely to guide us to a successful season. Exciting times ahead.
Exactly

He's taking this game seriously then. I thought he'd rotate Fletcher with Cleverley and see how the Ander/Cleverley combination would work against quality opposition. Surprised he went for Keane over Blackett.

sigh if all it takes to be pro footballer is have a decent pre season then i guess i gave up too early

This. If they play well, I'm down with it

He probably feels that Keane is better defensively and with Isco and Bale upfront for Real, who can blame him? Blackett's ability on the ball is better utilised against lesser teams that we have more freedom to attack.

Our first XI looks so average, hard to believe when you look at our lineups from a few years ago. Vermaelen will slot in perfectly...

Because everyone know Keane is a better CB.

After missing the last two games due to work I'm really excited for this game. I know it's just pre-season but I hope the quality of the players on the pitch tonight will guarantee a great game anyways.

anyone have a stream without adds and pop ups ?...thanks in advance

Let's win this one lads.

Any pictures from the stadium coming through, want to see what that place looks like packed with red!

Well I'm hoping Madrid really stretch this lineup especially the likes of Young, Valencia and Cleverley. I'm sure one game doesn't change a lot in LVGs plans but I still hope he sees the gulf in quality at United vs some top sides first hand. Can't just keeping doing with decent-enough players anymore. It depends on what you're aiming for, just good enough to be in top 4 or really challenge the best sides in Europe.

I don't really know at this stage in their careers how much some of these players can improve under LVG. They will eventually get found out and I'm hoping it's sooner than later. (Yes, it feels odd to say such a thing about United getting stretched but my intentions are clear. I'm hoping that we make some big money signings both because we need a couple atleast, and to show we still roll with the big boys)

I just don't understand the pathetic negativity surrounding united and LVG on here. He's paid enough let him do his job. If he fails like the one I refuse to speak of then have your girly tantrums. Until then enjoy the ride.
