Manchester United vs Burnley (Behind closed doors friendly)

I noticed all reports are about who started, while no one has reported anything about other players who played. For all we know the team that conceded a bunch could have been filled with fringe youth players, who we already know from pre-season aren't physically ready for the PL.

"Sat with a mate who coaches Utd under 10’s who was at the game. Said it was 1-0 when Muric handled outside the box and should have been sent off. He said we played the first team but wasn’t sure about whether Beyer played or not. He doesn’t know who scored the goals. Fernandez, Henderson and McGuire didn’t play"

What’s the difference between a friendly against Burnley’s second team, and just organising an 11 v 11 with people already in the squad?

It's probably more of an adversarial sparring & closer to competitive conditions exercice.

What other result was it possible to expect with this team?
6 of those we should have sold this summer bringing in 3 replacements on top of what we have.

It's not though. Butland/Heaton are back up GK's, Malacia and Dalot are back up full backs, Lindelof is back up CB, Eriksen and Mainoo back up midfielders, Sancho, Garnacho, Amad are the back up forwards.

That's 9 positions for players that aren't the starting 11, that will play before any of the players that played against Burnley.

Ok, good points.

As you were, gents. Nothing to see here.

Little worrying that

Something seems really off at the moment. All these added friendlies, regressive form to start the season... EtH is clearly not happy with something.

Probably a combination of players not coming back fit enough, having to work with players he'd expected to feck off, and not getting the replacements needed.

Could be a tricky season.

Hasn't it been the same for the majority of managers here? second season and it all either goes downhill, or the manager isn't backed enough to even nearly challenge because we secured top four.

Until the Glazers go we're absolutely fecked.

Can nobody spell Maguire correctly?

A lot of the players mentioned regularly get mentioned to be leaving soon, so they are not all our 1st reserve players

Henderson
Jurado
Fernandez
Pelistri
Donny
Maguire

All these players are likely leaving or are on the chopping block

So why have the game and risk these players getting an injury? Nothing makes sense with the club once again.

Still can't believe Jonny Evans is back. What a laughing stock they've made this great club.

Oooh let me get annoyed about something. What's the favourite here? Can't wait to get stuck in.

At least we are consistent. Can’t score what ever team we put out.

We could have lost 10 nil, all that is important is a must win at home to Forest on Saturday.

We don’t win that game then I think most will start to feel a bit worried. I already am and was post Wolves based on our window and sales v our rivals.

Also Martial is our backup CF but he literally had no pre season...

Seeing as that team is basically our first reserve for every starter - and Burnley presumably didn't play their first team - I would say it was possible to expect a result better than a three nil defeat.

You are so naive.

I wouldn't worry too much about the score or the stats. United will be relying on some of these players and getting their fitness right is all that matters here.

While I believe this is true this doesn't help. The point about fitness is also something that could easily define the purpose of pre season (not to over analyse results) and the players still stated the season unable to come out of 2nd gear.

All these results including pre season show, is that United are struggling to build momentum and that's a huge worry. Last season they lost three games on the bounce the manager was able to jumpstart some consistency. It's hard to know if anything is amiss we can only speculate but there's certainly something that's not right. People can say it's only approaching three games into the season but it still feels flat and that feeling which is an intangible is being reflected in the teams performances.

Burnley's previous fixture was called off so they fielded a strong team in the first half.

The sooner this takeover happens the better so the proper clear out can happen, there also has to be real scrutiny with how future recruitment is made because some of these players are no were near good enough.

You’re right. We’ve got some really bad players. ETH came in last season and managed to get all of them up a level, but we needed to get rid of loads this summer, we needed to buy more good players, and we needed to choose the right ones. We’ve done none of those things and I think the squad is possibly weaker and plenty of clubs have got stronger.

I bet ETH isn’t thinking ‘it was only a friendly’ yesterday. He’ll be very concerned, I imagine.

Doesn’t matter anyway, we will scrape a win against Nottingham than go on to lose to Arsenal and Brighton, it’s clear as daylight. Makes it 6/15.

imagine getting cross about a behind-closed doors friendly thats purely about fitness

Its a bit like my sons u7's team, they play a game at the end of training and often the losing team cries because they dont understand the purpose fully, but they're 7...

You bring honor to your username, keep up the work.

Has Goldbridge done one of his UNITED IN CRISIS!!! videos about this result yet?

After seeing reports of the team that played, result doesn't matter one iota.
Fitness training in competitive environment, move on

You all are feeding into this growing negative hysteria surrounding United which is intentionally being generated by the media. We had a decent pre-season, we've had a decent transfer window so far (especially in comparison to previous windows), we've had a better start than last season, yes the wolves game was a bit crap, the first half against spurs was actually pretty good bearing in mind the new style EtH wants us to play. This friendly has 0 meaning in regards to our season. Everyone is pressing the panic button feeding into this negative narrative that everything is on fire when in reality....its a fairly decent start to the season all things considered. Does it look like we will challenge for the league? not really but we wasn't expected to, does it look like we will fail to reach top 4? not really, last season we lost the first 2 and still finished 3rd, you can't tell anything from the first couple of games and especially from a behind the doors friendly.

Burnley wanted to play this game more than United because of Burnley's lack of game this weekend.

Really doubt EtH is particularly bothered by the result at all.
