Full back positioning are a big part of a teams tactics, by coming in centrally he's drawing a player in and leaving space for Nani wide, if they are to attack down that wing it then draws another player out of position, a striker for instance and they then have a toothless attack which is easy to manage, or a central player might try to exploit the space and you have space in the middle all of a sudden. There was an article on the importance of fullbacks on I think zonal marking but I might be wrong, worth a read if you can find it.
