HT Manchester United 2 Boca Juniors 0
Rio Ferdinand lasted just 25 minutes of his Old Trafford debut after
hobbling off with what appeared to be an ankle injury against Boca Juniors.
The British record £30million capture from Leeds was caught by Carlos Tevez
inside his own box and although he managed to avoid being stretchered away, he
looked in clear pain as his afternoon was brought to an end under the anxious
gaze of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
With a Champions League qualifier to come on Wednesday and the start of the
Premiership season just seven days away, it was a worrying development for
Ferguson, who was forced to go into today's game without first choice keeper
Fabien Barthez, who failed to recover from a thigh muscle injury.
Amid the undoubted concern for the England centre-half, Ferguson could at
least take solace from the performances of David Beckham and Ruud van
Nistelrooy, who struck twice to give the home side their interval lead.

When the action restarted, Beckham began to unhinge the Boca defence with a
couple of trademark right wing bursts.
On the first occasion Burdisso denied van Nistelrooy a goalscoring opportunity
with a near-post clearance, on the second Abbondacieri fumbled Solskjaer's
first-time shot round his left hand post.
The Boca keeper looked more assured as he dived forward to palm Solskjaer's
cross away from van Nistelrooy and he denied the Dutchman again six minutes
before the break with a point-blank save after another Beckham cross.
After such incisive work from the England skipper, it was ironic that van
Nistelrooy bagged his second thanks to Solskjaer's threaded pass.
Taking his strike partner's through-ball on the edge of the box, the Dutchman
clinically dispatched his shot into the corner once more leaving Abbondacieri a
helpless onlooker.
Laurent Blanc nearly grabbed a third when he nodded Beckham's corner
fractionally wide, then Abbondacieri blocked Veron's thunderous volley with his
feet as it headed towards the net.
