Manchester United trigger contract extensions for 4 players

Perfectly reasonable to keep Fred as a squad option. There’s not many better CMs on the bench in the league if any.

Thank you for this sensible post. He’s a truly excellent player as a bench/rotation option.

Very happy with these extensions, and with the policy of renegotiating with De Gea to a level that better reflects his true value at this point. He’s been a superb servant to the club over the years, but you can see that ETH wants a more modern option. That said, I have been amazed with how much he has developed DDG’s game over the last few months.

Allowing any of Rashford, Shaw, Dalot or Fred go on a free would’ve been a criminally bad decision. I am not averse to selling Fred in the summer, but am not sure if the economics of doing so, when we’d need to get a replacement. If the money was used to secure De Jong or Bellingham, then 100% absolutely do it. Otherwise keep him as a squad option.

I hope Rashford, Shaw and Dalot all sign extended deals on reasonable money. They’ve all played well under ETH, Dalot has a lot more to come, and Rashford and Shaw are also homegrown.

We should really be looking for permanent moves in the summer for Maguire, AWB, Telles, VdB, Jones, Bailly, and Tuanzebe. Reduce wages and get some funds in. Than makes moves to strengthen the spine (CB, CM, CF) and a right back. Something like Gusto, Gvardiol, Bellingham, Osimhen. Although other options like Dumfries, Frimpong, De Jong, Sesko, Gapko, Can all work.

Much will depend on the summer on who the new owners are and what sort of budget they have for us. We could be shopping in the Sesko/Gapko market, or in the Mbappe market, depending on how deep the pockets are.

Anyway, pleased with this move by the club.

Great news, now they can focus on the football part, while a new contract can be negotiated and agreed without any rush from both sides, if anyone wants to leave, we can receive a fee this summer.

I am happy for Dalot to get a new contract, I don't think he is on big wages and we can probably tie him down to a long term contract (4+1), he has been excellent this season and still can get better.

Shaw needs to find consistency in his game, on his day, he is one of the best LBs around.

Rashford has regained his confidence and had a good tournament (even though Southgate didn't make use of him), he must keep working on improving and getting that consistency that eluded him most of his career, probably a new contract on similar wages will be good for both side (which is probably a lot but we can't reduce it now).

Fred should be kept around as a bench option and probably moved on in summer 2024 if we get a decent player to replace him (Hannibal?)

Shaw will be 29 at the end of his contract here and I think that'd be the perfect time to let him go.
He has a history of weight issues showing poor professionalism and his form has been more bad than good in his time here.
I don't think he's a player to flourish in his 30s and will probably down tools again after the Euros in 18 months.

I’m just grateful we haven’t rewarded Phil Jones with a new contract for being injured the last 4 years!

Since ETH has been here we've been very sensible with our decision making. It's good we've move on from the Chaos of Ed Woodward.

ETH said everyone would have to earn a new contract and that is what we are seeing, everyone that has gotten this extension has earned it imo, next summer we can asses their second half of the season performance and concluded if they deserve long term contract or be sold for decent fees.

All of these extensions make sense.

Those that complain about Fred: did you forget that we still have Van De Beek and McTominay? They should definitely leave first and if they do then we only have 3 options left in Casemiro, Eriksen and Fred.

Happy with 3 out of 4, poor Fred he always tries his best. I remember him making the Wolves team look world class, especially The Hulk on the wing.

I think we need to get DDG signed up. Maybe it’s because I remember his hard we struggled to replace the Great Dane.

Mark Bosnich, Massimo Taibi, Fabien Barthez, Tim Howard and Roy Carroll, before we actually got a decent keeper in the experienced van der Sar. Do not gorget Barthez was Frances keeper and considered one the worlds best when he flopped for us. Bosnich was actually ok at times.

Fred should not be at the club beyond the summer. Not even as a squad option.
But players like VDB and Bissaka shall definitely be disposed of as a higher priority, Fred is at least significantly better than them.

Additionally, McTominay is in no way better than Fred (they are more or less on equal footing).

No brainer to up the one year extension. Stops them leaving on free transfers and if the club decide to sell, then we get some money back.

Would be happy to see shaw and fred depart permanently.

Who would you replace Shaw with out of interest? The guy is a top level LB who seems to be entering into top form.
Anyone ETH wants. Alot of our goals we conceeded under Ole were down Shaw's side of the pitch. I just dont rate him at all. He's not a potential league winning left back. RR didnt rate him either. Well he didnt rate wan bissaka and maguire either.

Malacia will take his spot longterm.

He must take a pay cut, and not a small pay cut either.

DDG makes 18m per year.

Courtois, Ederson and Allison all make 19.2m — combined

Allison is the second highest paid GK in the Premier League on 150k. We need to draw a line somewhere, can’t pay DDG much more than that.

Get your point but we bought DDG a long time ago for a pittance so it's different accounting wise, his purchase value will have have been written down 7-8 years ago whereas the other GKs will still have £ms being written off from when they were originally signed, so as far as the accounts look the numbers are probably level, it's the reason DDG will have been able to negotiate such a high wage in the first place, because he/his agent will have been aware that to replace him the wages and transfer fee (write-down) would be comparable to the weekly wage he was asking for.

Anyone ETH wants.
If Shaws form continues, I expect ETH will want Shaw to stay, then what?
Alot of our goals we conceeded under Ole were down Shaw's side of the pitch.
We were were a shapeless and dysfunctional mess all over the pitch during that time. And who was he playing behind / next to during during that time? Were the tactics (or lack of) the real problem?
I just dont rate him at all. He's not a potential league winning left back. RR didnt rate him either. Well he didnt rate wan bissaka and maguire either.
I disagree. I think he's one of our most talented players ... if fit. He seems to be thriving under ETH.
Malacia will take his spot longterm.
Not yet he wont and there's no guarantee he will at all. Our current 1st team back four is very good in it's present state, I wouldn't change any of them, let's see how good they can be.

Very much doubt that.

Nothing to see here.

3 first team players and a squad player getting their option triggered was always going to happen.

Under ETH, we do seem to just do the sensible / right thing...........which makes a nice change for us in recent times.

We bought him for 18.9million the record transfer fee for a goalkeeper at the time, hardly pittance.

Though looking at it, you might have a point, at the completion of his current contract he will have cost ~115million in wages. since 2011 so he would have cost around 12.2million per season (12.8m if we extended +1 at current rate) a new contract at a standard 4+1 would see that rise to 14.1m at current rate. If you use the same method, Alisson to date has cost Liverpool 21m per year (13.8m at the completion of current contract), Ederson 9.3m (6.6m), Édouard Mendy 10m (6.3m), Kepa 22.12m (16.75m), West ham's new keeper will be 8.2m, Hugo Lloris 6.7m (6.3m), Leno 10m (7.5m), Pickford 10.2m (9.3m).

So only Allison and Kepa costs more than De Gea on a per season basis, I imagine since it's City there is some skullduggery going on with Ederson and Mendy is currently refusing contract renewal attempts which would more than likely up his terms.

Think it depends why they are extended. A poster said in Freds ase it is jus tto protect the asset....is that possi bly true on all of them.

Rashford and Shaw are valuable players but lots of fans have wanted them or been happy for them to leave the last few years, myself included with Rashford.

Really really dont understand Fred getting a new contract unless it is to actually sell him. This is a £50m player and the most positive comment so far is he is a good squad option. Personally disagree, for me he is one of the players that is a step down in quality. Look at the improvement in our side with the two midfield signings we have made, we still need another signing which potentially makes Eriksen a squad signing, McTominay is little different in terms of quality that he adds. Then there are the likes of Hannibal and Iqbal as squad options.

He seems with a fair proportion of fans to be one of the mos tpopular worst signings we have made it seems

Let's just focus on Fred. What options do we have?

1. No trigger, hence Fred is allowed to leave for free THIS summer
2. Trigger, and see what offer can we get, if nothing more than 20m, then NEXT
3. Offer him a small but respectful (to his contribution) pay rise on a new contract, hence a squad player for 2-3 years
4. Run his extended contract for 1 more season (as squad)

Does it make sense to trigger? Considering his current wage is medium to low level, compared with DDG or CR or Rashford or Martial

I wouldn't minded if all four of them left to be honest.

Don't understand anyone who actually watches Dalot, a 23 year old right back, and doesn't think he has a bright future?
Same with wanting Shaw and Rashford gone. You realize that you can spend 60m on a left back every summer, 3 years in a row and still probably won't get one as good as just getting Shaw in form like he has been this season again? Or you can spend 100m on wingers multiple times and not get someone better than Rashford for us. Yet you wouldn't mind them leaving?

Fred really wasn’t necessary.
Dalot is the only one who deserves it 100%

I actually think Fred is a fantastic squad option. Usually brings good energy as a sub…
Except for when he thinks he’s a shadow striker and then we get caught on the break
Except for when we need Fred to do something/anything. Fred is good at following the play when he has a loose role. When we need him holding, or launching counters, or stopping their midfield, he’s usually not up to the task. He’d slay in a 5 a side.

Fred and Mctom remain two very upgradable parts of our squad whatever one thinks of their abilities.

Cant see the sense in giving Fred a one year deal. We wont have anyone wanting to buy him and hes simply not good enough. It will be another 4/5 mill wasted
