Manchester United trigger contract extensions for 4 players

Makes sense, only one you could debate is Fred but he’ll either be sold or become a squad option.

Fred should not be at the club beyond the summer. Not even as a squad option. That's what players like Eriksen are for. It just stinks of United trying to protect the asset value again. The others are fair enough.

Curious what they're going to do with De Gea given the reports of him not wanting a paycut and ETH already looking for a replacement in the summer. Don't know what's true and what's not of course. Happy they triggered their clauses, especially Rashford. Hopefully they find an agreement and his contract situation so it won't end up a big drama.

Good decision on all fronts.

Hopefully we can tie Dalot, Shaw & Rashford down to long term contracts soon.

Fred should be allowed to leave next summer when his contact expires & De Gea let go and replaced at the end of this season.

I really hope Dalot and Shaw can sign new deals. Rashford if the price is right. De Gea and Fred can go as far as I'm concerned, not fussed about them.

If we get offered big money I would let Rashford go.

Am I in the minority with that view?

Probably, would cost equally big money to replace, even if Sancho turned it around and Garnacho continued his upward trajectory.

I would only sell if he wanted out, and the only teams who could afford what we'd want are the oil cubs.

What figure?

Have to weigh up the cost of replacing him in the current market v a renewal.

I think it would have to be crazy money to be worth our while

Perfectly reasonable to keep Fred as a squad option. There’s not many better CMs on the bench in the league if any.

Think it depends why they are extended. A poster said in Freds ase it is jus tto protect the asset....is that possi bly true on all of them.

Rashford and Shaw are valuable players but lots of fans have wanted them or been happy for them to leave the last few years, myself included with Rashford.

Really really dont understand Fred getting a new contract unless it is to actually sell him. This is a £50m player and the most positive comment so far is he is a good squad option. Personally disagree, for me he is one of the players that is a step down in quality. Look at the improvement in our side with the two midfield signings we have made, we still need another signing which potentially makes Eriksen a squad signing, McTominay is little different in terms of quality that he adds. Then there are the likes of Hannibal and Iqbal as squad options.

He seems with a fair proportion of fans to be one of the mos tpopular worst signings we have made it seems

Who broke this first? Just interested in keeping track of who the organization leaks info to.

Great news. Many fans don't like Fred but he's good player and you don't let him leave for free, he either stays as squad option or gets sold as there surely will be several clubs interested, for a decent fee as well.

Few players left whose contracts are about to expire in 6 months: De Gea (could stay if he's ready to have his wages lowered), Jones (won't get a new contract), Tuanzebe (seems unlikely he'll be offered a new contract either) and Garnacho (hopefully he signs soon).

At least on Twitter, Fabrizio had it first:

100%, this is an organized “leak” by the club. No way one guy otherwise get all 4 at the same time.

Why do we leak this to Fabrizio? Why not someone local like I don’t know, Lockhurst? Bet all journalists on the beat would love to have it. Perhaps Richard Arnold is a big fan of Fabrizio and want to be nice to him?

No way. It’s 110% quid pro quo. Soon Fabrizio will tweet about bunch of teams being interested in Wan Bissaka or whatever. Some info we want out there.

Fabrizio also broke Cunha from Athletico to Wolverhampton. At the same time he is talking about how Joao Felix is worth 145m £, a bench player for so-so team in La Liga? Fabrizio breaks three transfers in a row by LOSC — then he is out there talking about how Jonathan David is a fantastic talent worth 60m. A 22 y/o striker who last scored 15 goals in 38 games in a farmers league? Only 5 players went for 60m or more in the summer window of 2022. Isak went for 59. Richarlison for 50. Does he seriously think Jonathan David is worth 60m? Of course not.

Fabrizio Romano is really interesting to read because he got insider information. Just think it’s important to point out that every time he opens his mouth, he only provides info that (a) one team or agent want out there to (b) affect how someone else will act. Inflate prices. Create a hype. Drum up interest. Etc etc etc.

Should we let DDG leave if we find a young promising GK in the summer? He's served us well but we're in a rebuilding phase and he might be convinced to go back to Spain for his last few years.

I love him as a player but I'm not sure it makes sense financially to keep him unless we're stuck

The Athletic had it before his post. He never has news on us before someone else.

He must take a pay cut, and not a small pay cut either.

DDG makes 18m per year.

Courtois, Ederson and Allison all make 19.2m — combined

Allison is the second highest paid GK in the Premier League on 150k. We need to draw a line somewhere, can’t pay DDG much more than that.

That is right — haha, pretty impressive by Fabrizio to be first with it on Twitter (or maybe my search was bad, someone could have had it without the word ‘extend’ in the tweet).

Forget what I said about, or at least don’t expect it to apply to us.

I think Fred will be sold but just triggered extension to try get some sort of value for him.

We have gone from getting peanuts for him to getting 2 packets of peanuts.

Doesn't make sense financially or in football terms to offer him anything near what he's on for any length of time. Personally I think the club would be better off looking for a more experienced option a bit like VDS, rather than a younger inexperienced keeper. Sommer is out of contract in the summer, he seems like the right kind of option stylistically to what ETH wants.

The other 4, maybe aside from Rashford. I'd have no problem seeing the other 3 leave. They just haven't done enough to warrant long term deals, it's high time the club stopped rewarding mediocrity.

We’re likely to go all out in the summer on a centre forward and a midfield partner for Casemiro so triggering the one year extension on those four was inevitable.

I’d imagine Dalot and Laird will be our right back options whilst AWB is moved on, we’ll assess Shaw whilst Malacia gets another year under his belt, Fred will be a back up or used when we need energy and pressing and Rashford will negotiate a new long term contract.

With De Gea I think it’s simple and that’s either he takes a 50% pay cut or he’s moved on, a 50% pay cut would still mean somewhere in the region of £185K a week which is still the highest for a keeper in the league.

Fred will be 30 in the summer? Is he even sellable while being on 120k a week? Stupid extension imo.
If he is on £120k a week then £6m for a year of a useful squad player like Fred is far better value than money we've thrown away elsewhere.

I don't think ETH rate Fred. He's a squad player because we don't have other option
