Manchester United to Tour U.S. in 2003
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 1:17 p.m. ET

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Reigning English Premier League champion Manchester United will have a preseason tour of exhibition matches in the United States in 2003.

The club will play in Los Angeles on July 12, Boston on July 16, and in the New York area on July 19. The opponents haven't been determined yet.

United, England's dominant soccer team for the last 10 years, announced a commercial partnership with the New York Yankees last year.

Anyone for a West Coast party next July?

I wonder if they'll give United a sacrificial lamb (the LA Galaxy or a MLS "all star" team) or try to sell out 103,000 seats at the Rose Bowl by bringing in the top club from Mexico (any Mexican team considers matches in California to be home games)?

I want a rematch with Necaxa in the Rose Bowl.

feck.. looks like i'm driving to the east coast or the west coast... 3 games is all? i'd like to see them play the Fire in chicago... little closer to this stupid state that's called Iowa... hehehe ;)

they are coming!!!!!!!! <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />
will watch all three games!!!!!!!
united forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

Ive worked in the States for a while and the only team the Americans are interested in is United and thats only a few. They still think football is a girls sport, so feck em.

I'd rather United tour a country that is actually INTERESTED in the beautiful game and not just the money making capacity of United.

Hire big halls and serve cheap beer.

We're all coming over.

And for next years holiday familly...We will be going to the United States of America.

:D

It's important for teams to have fun when going on pre-season tours. It's more of a chance for the new signings to get to grips with their team-mates, have a few light games and see the sights, while at the same time allowing those who don't see United often a chance to see their heroes.

Balderdash you anti-American bigot. Americans are from everywhere on the planet, and many teams have fan clubs over here, including Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern, Real, Barcelona, Celtic and Ranger (inseperable, aren't they), Penarol, and (here in California) most of the teams in the Mexican first division. The problem is that although what is called "soccer" over here is a very popular sport for kids to play, that hasn't translated into big bucks on the television for a domestic professional league.

Unlike many other nations, where football is the top team sport and all others vie for the attention and money of the viewing public, in the United States both baseball and gridiron football were well established by 1900, so "soccer" is the "johnnie-come-lately" who must compete on unfavorable terms against the established sports (including the one truely American game--basketball). The fact that we can still pack 100,000 into stadia to watch some of the matches (Olympic or World Cup) shows that there is a potential market here which, even if only a thin slice of the entertainment revenue pie, would mean more in dollar terms than being the only show in one of the destitute third world nations you seem to favor.

If you're really more interested in the beauty of the game and fans who really care about it than in supporting an entity dedicated to maximum revenue production, I suggest you forget about the PLC and go support Torquay, York, or a similar small squad.

According to Red News we´ll be playing the Irish National Team in Boston and Real Madrid in New York City.

do you have beer there and if so, how much is it for a pint?

I can't wait, it's only a 6-7 hour drive for me to L.A. so I'm going to take a few days off, rent out a nice place, drag some of my buddies along and have a huge party. My only problem is that I'm the only Man Utd fan in my group. Oh well, as long as provide the drinks, I'll get a bus load of people. I can't wait, I'm going to make reservations right now. Hmmm, or should I make it a week long trip and fly out to the east coast too??????

FresnoBob or anybody else, do you know of any good places to stay in Pasadena???

hmmmm (don't mean to be a wet blanket on this topic but) didn't the NY Times report that United would be doing a USA tour two years ago (& nothing came of it)...I wouldn't be making any reservations, yet.

My guess is that it's BS just to get americans all hyped up and telling ppl about MU. (simple marketing tactic)

I'm defo going to LA, only 8 hours away, but not sure about the other games... plane / hotel fare alone would be astronomical. <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

Read this yesterday and immediately sounded out 2 of my boys re: driving trip next summer LA, Boston and NY. Now the wife....? Any ideas?
I'll be there somehow. And what a great time for us all to get together, albeit briefly.
Keano vs himself (there's only one). Can't wait, especially if Ireland win the World Cup (well, shit, you can dream can't you). Planning it already. Already looking into scheduling all my activities around that time.
See u there

If anyone finds out when tix go on sale for the Rose Bowl match please email me and let me know..and I read they will just be playing the Galaxy, which makes the most sense.

Dave

I live about 10-15 minutes away from the Rose Bowl. Definately going to do all 3 games. We've got over a year to get it sorted.

If all goes well.....I am to be in San Diego for the ESRI Conference from July 7 - July 13. I've already told the wife we are going. No if's and's or but's.......we are going. So..... to red sun, manufanatic, ukbob, fresno bob.....etc....and also include any other RED FANS in California, we should all meet up somewhere and have tailgate party before the match.....Any ideas from you Californians?????? The original plans were LA, the Great Lakes and New York...it is a bit unfair having two venues so close together (NY & Boston), but I'm not complaining :D

Chicago or Dallas would be great sites for a 4th city (or to replace Boston). Both cities have stadia that can hold over 60K each. Denver would be another city.

Guide to Pasadena:

<a href="http://www.pasadenacal.com/map/map1024.htm" target="_blank">http://www.pasadenacal.com/map/map1024.htm</a>

The Rose Bowl is about a mile northwest of Old Pasadena.

Burbank (BUR) Airport is conveniently close by (12 mi to the west).
