Not easy to shine twice a week, particularly when you have to deal with injuries...

Well I was nearly right

True, but I haven't had something to cheer about for a while, so lets just enjoy it hey?

Agreed, I reckon any premiership side would of beat maccabi we beat a second rate team 5-0 in the qualifying round but could not carry it over to the premiership still a good result though :D

we played well...

but its only haifa.. i think we'll be able to tell in a few weeks, if its going to be good season or not.

Decent performance overall, and hopefully the lift we needed. All the players who needed to perform, performed to a better level.

Veron was good in spells, much like United really. When he was passing it around quickly, he looked sharp. But he was let down by silly mistakes at times. The goal made up for it though. The delight on his face at scoring shows you the desire he has to suceed at United.

Giggs was the best I've seen all season. He didn't stop working hard the whole time he was on the field. A well taken header too. Man of the Match for me.

Van Nistelrooy played an excellent through ball for Ole's goal, and took his goal well. Hopefully that should silence his critics.

Forlan. My heart was pounding when he stepped up, but it was a well taken penalty. Unfortunate not to score in open play, but a goals a goal, and its a start. Pleased for the lad, its about time he got more than 10-15 mins.

Phil Neville was excellent in the centre of midfield. He was involved in most of the play. His cross for Giggs was well-placed and he worked hard. He was certainly out to prove a point, and he did that for me.

O'Shea, another confindent performance. Looks comfortable down the right, especially for a big lad. Although, I rather feel against better players he wouldn't be as successful perhaps.

Blanc and Rio didn't look as tight as they have done. A few silly mistakes, which led to goals. Perhaps O'Shea is destined to partner Rio... we'll see.

Had a decent look at Pugh. He looks ok, but I'm not gonna start raving about him. Didn't see enough IMO. Ricardo likewise.

A good performance, with signs of classic United. But still not our best. That should come with the return of players like Keane, Butt, Scholes... etc.

Team in crisis? Think not.

The season starts here... I hope ( ;) )

We will this time. This was a more complete performance than against ZTE. Against ZTE we started like a rocket and then dropped off, and picked up a couple of goals late on. Tonight we kept the pace up until then last 5 minutes. It shows the lads are fitter and the hunger shown by Becks, Seba and Giggs to chase down every ball even in the second half when the match was well won impressed me greatly.

I realise that, but the critics didn't.

Same for Phil Neville IMO (Except the goals bit ;) )

It was a very good performance, better movement in particular, as well as judgement. Alex was right that that needed improving, and it had a big effect. Also credit where its due, Phil had a great game, well done Phil! And well done Veron! There, I said it. Hope its not the last time.

I know Maccabi Haifa aren't exactly the strongest team in the competition, but hopefully the most important thing that we got from tonight is that a number of our players have gotten the confidence boost they desperately needed.

Blanc is our best defender, Rio is a great buy too. Stop this bull shit.. I bit you think Forlan is a great player. ;)

That's what I was trying to imply...

Confidence is king

A nice shot of the stuff for: Veron, Forland, RVN and Ole - top stuff

5-2 and only second in the group

Bit worried about Leverkusen getting spanked. That might really open up our group and they'll be a wounded animal when we have to take them on.

As for tonight, who gives a toss about some conceding some sloppy goals. We created a bag full of much needed chances. Everyone's happy.

Bring on the Spurs :D

Agreed. He's one of less skillful of the untied team, but he's been taken out of position and played as well as anyone could expect. He tackled back well and did a lot of hard work that has to a large extent gone un-noticed

nice to get 5 goals but sloppy to ship those 2 against. Not going to get carried away, against that opposition we could have had a lot more.

Giggs was excellent tonight, not only on the ball but getting back and putting the work in again.

Good to see Phil getting one of the biggest cheers of the night when he got a great tackle in. He's done a good job as an emergency CM & now people can see the benefits of keeping the likes of Phil around, mixed with the superstars.

Veron was, well Veron really. Great pass to RVN for his goal, and a nice goal for himself too. Bloody frustrating though, at times i wanted to strangle him, especially at one point he had the ball, facing his own net just standing there. The whole ground shouted "man on!!" and he still lost the ball. Sloppy with some of the basic stuff, could get punished against a better team.

Ferdinand & Blanc. Pretty sloppy at times back there. gave away 2 goals that could just have easily been prevented. Im glad it wasnt someone better we were playing!

RVN - hope thats a sign hes back!!

Becks - put in the hard work tonight. passing a lot better than against Leeds. Had a decent game.

David May - great to see him looking so fit and healthy on the bench! Neil, didnt i tell you he's make the squad! The cheerleaders on his way back :D

as for the opposition..well, i wish we could play them every week. did you see the 2 subs they brought on? what size were those guys? if one had stood on top of the other, they still wouldnt have been as tall as Blanc!!

Barthez ----6/10 wasn't put under any pressure, but he won't be happy letting one in thru his legs. He was grinning when he game off, but he knows Ricardo is here to put him under pressure. As it should be.
Slivestre --6/10 not at his storming best but didn't need to be. An steady defensive display for the most part.
O'Shea -----7/10 The pick of the defenders, if only for the novelty value. Some nice touches but will probably be his last game for a while.
Blanc ------6/10 yet to reach an understanding with Rio, but it will come.
Ferdinand---5/10 an average day at the office till he let himself down at the end with some over casual play. The thing about Rio is he never wants to look crude and lumpen. Someone should tell him, just because we spent £30 mill on the new Bobby Moore(or should that be Martin Buchan?) it's still ok to launch it into row z when appropriate. No shame in that, every touch and move does not have to be breathtaking and elegant. He'll be a star...no worries.
Beckham ----8/10 fantastic 2nd half, never stopped running. Reminded me of the way he captained Ingerlund in World Cup qualifiers. We have to start playing him in the middle surely?
Neville ----6/10 held his position ok, one good run. Faded in 2nd half and started to give the ball away. Why Beckham was not in the middle with Veron against such poor opposition I'll never know. Maybe it was because we had been scouting the wrong team for the last few weeks?
Veron ------7/10 desperate to do well but started badly, trying too hard for that killer pass. The goal should do him the world of good. Some of his play in the 2nd half was quality.
Giggs ------8/10 scored a sweet glancing header and had one really good run and dribble. Still, the body language speaks volumes. What price an OT Prem goal Ryan? C'mon..you know you can do it.
Solskjaer --8/10 If that finish was by Terry Henry, his non-flying dutchman colleague or everybody's favourite cheeky chelsea cosa nostra cockney then the London press would be creaming themseleves. Supersub my arse!
Nistelrooy -8/10 Ruud was desperate for a goal and he willed it. Strength of character. Let's not neglect his link-up play either. So he missed a couple of chances against Leeds after good individual play? If we had a 4th striker like any other serious champioship side it would not be an issue. Liverpool can afford to rest the over-wound scouse mouse that is Owen. We can't do the same with our top man.

Ricardo ----6/10 pity Rio spoiled his debut somewhat, but I thought he looked ok. Unlucky with the goal.
Forlan -----8/10 shame it had to be a penalty, but the quality is there. He's a super little player that gives us plenty of options.
Pugh -------7/10 lots of endeavour and energy...always nice to see a new homegrown lad get his 15 mins of fame.

Well most people have put their opinion in and ratings so i might as well. I'll try to make it reasonable brief

Fabien - 6. Should have done better with the goal, but was left exposed by lack of defence.
O'Shea - 8. Outstanding, very Gary Nevilleish, overlapping down the wing. Solid in defence
Mickey - 6. Unusually inconsistant going forward. But another solid game
Larry - 7. Calm and composed was let down by Rio
Rio - 5. His poorest game in a Red Shirt. It was a good time to have a bad game
Phil - 7.5. Only got the extra .5 because he was way out of his natural position. Did very well, tracking back was very good
Seba - 7.5. Solid in first half, excellent in 2nd. Beautiful pass for RVN's goal. Still can't tackle and no left foot but who cares.
Becks - 7. Ran his socks off. A true captains performance.
Giggs - 8.5. Like Becks his work rate was higher than at anytime this season
Ole - 8. What a finsh, switched with Giggs well
RVN - 7. Great finish, lovely pass for Ole's goal

Diego - 7. Not on long enough for anything more. worked hard, made some great runs. Well done on the goal
Danny Pugh - 6. Solid start
Ricardo - Not much he could do about the goal. Made a geat save.

M.O.M - Giggs. Although i'm about to complain about him. (another thread)

i don't think so..

all keepers spread themselves.. and there'e nothing they can do about it, if, the ball goes between their legs, at pace.

Big Pete let in a few like that...

Giggzy do me a favour, if you're going to quote me, atleast include the whole quote. I did say he was let down by the lack of defence

hang on.

u said he could have done better.. by this what do u mean then?

Fabien is relatively small for a keeper, less than 6 foot, he's very agile and normally gets down quicker than most keepers.

It's being picky but i'm in an unusally picky move tonight

Well he did have three goes at that particular free kick thanks to some eccentric decisions by the ref. First two into the wall, then a Juve player gets booked, third one over the wall and into the net.

Eh did you watch the match? He took them at the right height but the Juve players were practically in FRONT of him by the time he kicked the ball, they stole more metres than any team would throughout the match and van Hooijdonk told the referee to pay attention to that (rightly so). But still, it isn't just this match, van Hooijdonk has scored so many last year and this season already, he's gaining in rep of being a great freekick taker even though he's not playing for a big club. I was surprised how they were all well informed about van H's ability on the Juve forums...

Didn't see the match - I was watchign another one at the time....maybe you can think of which one???

But I did see the incident. I wasn't commenting on his ability as a whole, just that particular effort. It was the first time I have seen that happen.

football forum is across the way.....

Phew...

Got threw that one.

I guess United wont be complete crap this year...

really I predict this is the moral boost the club needed to get out the rut they were in. Now it's time to carry the good passing and finishing into the Premier League Fixtures.

It kills me that I have no confidence to play any of the MU guys on my fantasy team.

I haven't seen the game but I'd think it be important to note that from what I read on the Live Commentary at soccernet...MU had great form throughout the match...and without Roy Keane.
*for all those who don't think United have a chance of a quality match without Keane.

One thing that has been overlooked is that Maccabi deserve a lot of Credit for coming to Old Trafford and making a game of it.
This was the biggest game in their history and i wouldn't have been suprised to see them freeze and resort to trying to spoil the game. They came here with the intention of playing and did just that
