Manchester United 'Banter club'

I'll take the banter off City fans, everyone else can feck off they're just as bad as us, the difference is we used to be up there and now we're not, and that's why we receive more banter, people are kicking us while they can, there was a close up of a forest fan giving a 1-0 hand gesture yesterday, if you saw it you probably reacted like me and let fly with the expletives, she banter'ed us, do you want to swap places with a Forest fan? Nah, me neither. Banter is often an own goal, it's like me laughing at someone that used to drive a Bentley now driving a high end merc from the comfort of my pedal bike.

Are we a laughing stock? Yes. Has this drop off been bigger than expected? Yes. But we're not irrelevant.

The fact we're this bad and still on everyone's minds, fans and media alike, shows you the stature of the club. We're box office but for the wrong reasons.

I'm sure we'll turn it around, the SJR stake is a step in the right direction, but I can't tell you when we'll get out this cycle. It's really hard to predict.

If you go by other teams like Liverpool, it took them 30 years, Arsenal took 18-20 years till now before they started to look competent again (and even then they haven't won anything major yet), Chelsea have always been an on/off club since Abramovic takeover with a couple of good seasons and then some poor ones, they look clueless under Bohley regime so far, City were nothing prior to Mansour's takeover, AC Milan/Inter Milan had droughts in Serie A. All clubs go through this to some degree.

What's more disappointing for me is the lack of excitement I get watching United, consistently for most of the seasons post-ferguson. That Villa game to be fair was a blast from the past. More games like that please. Don't mind being dross for a bit but please don't make it a chore to watch.

Great post mate. I'm here for ups and downs. Love United, dark days, but it will get better.

Barca won the UCL in 09.

Roy Hodgson was their manager in 2010. Kenny was in 2011.

I feel like dates aren’t your thing.

I do apologies i'm having a mare!

However, i will say i don't think Pool were ever quite the laughing stock we've become - but then i think that's in part due to the fact people just care about United more, so it's more heavily reported because of the constant success under SAF. Where as Liverpool were so irrelevant for so long before their "banter years" that no one really cared that much.

Since the emergence of the Busby-babes in the mid 1950's, winning the Div 1 title and being the first English club to compete in European Cup, the first to win it 1968 and the almost miraculous recovery after the devastation of Munich, we had the Sir Matt Busby Era, which saw the club established as a footballing 'trail-blazer'.

Then followed a period of wandering in the football wilderness, the lost possibilities of Tommy doc's team after the return to Div1 and his personal traumas. We then had the years of ups and downs, won the odd cup, in particular FA cup beating Liverpool and ending their treble bid. Then a new United manager also a Scot 'trail blazed' in the new PL, winning altogether 13 PL titles (a record still unbeaten).

Since the Sir Alex Ferguson Era, we have lost a our 'trail blazing' mantle, poor ownership understanding of what it takes to 'trail-blaze' in footballing terms, has cost us dear. We are now not just wandering in the wilderness, a decaying monolith, a team, a club structure and even a ground that is barely fit for purpose in the modern era. We are heading for a long period of recuperation, and that is assuming the injection of INEOS finance and know how will work.

Ironically its probably only the ABU's and their banter that is keeping us relevant and news worthy at the present time.

I swear more people hate their club than actually support it & actually thrive in the misfortunes of it.

We’re entering the stage where the banter isn’t funny and other clubs just feel sorry for us. Bantering United is low hanging fruit

Liverpool were a banter club for over two decades bar a few seasons.
Fair enough, but apart from the period in which I quoted, they were never as bad as we were. Obviously, I’m a lot younger, I’m only 24, and I only started following United and football in general in 2010, but I specified those years because of the fact that they finished outside of the top four in each of those seasons. I wasn’t alive to witness th

That last paragraph is spot on, we’ve been crap for ten years but opposition fans still love taking the piss out of us. They claim we aren’t a big club, which is probably true, but they still love to laugh at our failure nevertheless. They’ve been hurt that much by our years of success under Fergie.

Expressions called us "Little Red Riding Hood getting fisted in the Forest." Obviously everyone enjoys our travails because we had it so good, for so long.

One guy commenting on the BBC begrudging Earps the SPOTY because he hates the club she plays for, but accepts it just for England is just incredibly small-time though. Probably the sort of twat who would scream "Go on, Becks!" when he played for England and called him a cnut on a Saturday.

Some of the comments in here are actually mind-blowing. I can't be bothered to highlight them, but.... seriously..?

Really? I mostly see fans angry that the club is such a joke these days and eager for us to get our shit together. The frustrating people are the top reds who are encouraging everyone to back the latest failing manager and team all the way to relegation if necessary.

You just need to chill and accept that if you’re a big club and spend long periods of time at the top then when the inevitable cycle comes where you cease to be successful you’ll assume the mantle of being a banter club.

It’s just the way it goes. Small clubs never become banter clubs. It’s the big fish. We’ve all been there.

It is funny when a club goes through a "banter era" how many fans go into the woodwork. Why would anyone spend their Saturday night at the pub supporting United? Will just look a mug cheering that equaliser then Forest go and score. Hence it feels like there's a lot less United fans about.

I've noticed it with Arsenal fans that when they started doing well last season it was as though the fanbase just doubled in size.

i’m happy for criticising and such but for almost seeking out negativity and being OTT with it, it’s tiring.

Calling our own team “banter club” is downright embarrassing, leave that to the oppo supporters.

That’s the point I’m making.
