Since the emergence of the Busby-babes in the mid 1950's, winning the Div 1 title and being the first English club to compete in European Cup, the first to win it 1968 and the almost miraculous recovery after the devastation of Munich, we had the Sir Matt Busby Era, which saw the club established as a footballing 'trail-blazer'.
Then followed a period of wandering in the football wilderness, the lost possibilities of Tommy doc's team after the return to Div1 and his personal traumas. We then had the years of ups and downs, won the odd cup, in particular FA cup beating Liverpool and ending their treble bid. Then a new United manager also a Scot 'trail blazed' in the new PL, winning altogether 13 PL titles (a record still unbeaten).
Since the Sir Alex Ferguson Era, we have lost a our 'trail blazing' mantle, poor ownership understanding of what it takes to 'trail-blaze' in footballing terms, has cost us dear. We are now not just wandering in the wilderness, a decaying monolith, a team, a club structure and even a ground that is barely fit for purpose in the modern era. We are heading for a long period of recuperation, and that is assuming the injection of INEOS finance and know how will work.
Ironically its probably only the ABU's and their banter that is keeping us relevant and news worthy at the present time.
