Manchester City fans: The True fans of working-class Manchester?

Yeah i agree with you, you do still get hardcore supporters but it seemed like in the past every game was taken in by a huge majority of hardcore, now it is hard to tell, only away supports seem to have that element. I didn't say no hardcore fans existed, just far fewer.

And i see your point about the interest and i can't claim to know the history but United had money as far as i can remember, broke the transfer record in the 60s signing Denis Law for example and you have to take into account that in the modern game where money is the driving force without a doubt that no side could compete based on ticket sales or support size with the already established big clubs.

The advantage they have is insurmountable without massive investment.

Sadly, some of those who might have earned being called 'hardcore supporters' have been priced out. They're still 100% United in their hearts, they're just not able to attend games. A tiny group has walked away in disgust (the hardcore of the FC United lot - although many are of course both United & FC). It's truly sad.

I still maintain we've got a good, solid group of hardcore supporters (some of those being OOT, even in extreme cases OOC too) - we've just added to that group by attracting more OOT & OOC support than eg City.

I get your point about how it's almost impossible for smaller clubs to catch up, especially after '92. It's also true we've had our own 'sugar daddies' in our history, like John H. Davies back in 1902. Those are great topics for other threads, but I still don't see how this is relevant given the topic of this thread.

It's simply a blatant lie to claim City is 'the one true Manchester club', 'the people's club', and that they've got more support in Manchester than United. I think we're justified in feeling disgusted about people who're perpetuating that myth.

I always thought it was short for Red Arrogant Gits (or something along those lines).
Like some people said upthread, it's from when we were on our uppers in the 30s, and it really took hold when we had to play at Maine Road after the war.

The acronym (Red Arrogant Gits) & the 'time of the month' reference are all derived from the original 'rag', as in 'poor bastard'.
And now they can taunt us for our poor finances once again... ;)

Not this old chestnut again! Manchester is at least 60 - 40 Red and has been so all of my life. My dad always said it was the same ..even before Munich!

Unfortunately you get the likes of Sky interviewing fans about 3 hours before a game outside the ground when you will only find tourists at that time, this helps to perpetuate the myth. (I wish they'd go into the pubs on the way to the ground an hour before kick off instead!)

I now live in Kent and get stick from Arsenal fans (their ground is 60 miles away) that all United's support isn't from Manchester ....ironic eh!
