Yeah i agree with you, you do still get hardcore supporters but it seemed like in the past every game was taken in by a huge majority of hardcore, now it is hard to tell, only away supports seem to have that element. I didn't say no hardcore fans existed, just far fewer.
And i see your point about the interest and i can't claim to know the history but United had money as far as i can remember, broke the transfer record in the 60s signing Denis Law for example and you have to take into account that in the modern game where money is the driving force without a doubt that no side could compete based on ticket sales or support size with the already established big clubs.
The advantage they have is insurmountable without massive investment.
