Man United v Liverpool Post Match

Exactly that's all it is . The whole tour has been a waste of time for Jose and Utd .

How can you be happy when you have one guaranteed starter on a preseason tour ? How can you be expected to properly prepare for the season ahead with one player ?

If anything tonight's result might be a blessing and make the board do whatever it takes to bring in players that are ready to step in now and get us challenging

Wow what a spin job. Matic is having surgery might as well cancel the season ....

I rather doubt anyone would have cared had United lost 6-0 If Mourinho had opened things up and attempted different styles of play.

The reason people are pissed is due to the fact that the play looked exactly like the uninspired refuse that was served up in the past season.

This is going to be a disasterous season. It already looks all too similar to the Chelsea 2015-2016 preseason.

Mourinho backers were saying espousing the same excuses.

That 30% quote is fake, right?
Who is Neil Jones anyway? Handle suggests a writer for Goal, which means it being a lie shouldnt be a surprise.

Haven't heard the audio, but been tweeted by a couple of others, and Jose basically says the exact same thing in his interview with MUTV.

Personally, I have a sneaking suspicion Mourinho may be quite happy at this result - he can give the Board a jolt about the need for transfers in.

Stone pretty much corroborates it.

Neil Jones: "We started the game with a lot of players who will not be in our squad on August 9. This is not my squad, not even half, not even 30% of my squad. So don't look to this."

Simon Stone: "We start the game with players who are not even going to be here This is not even 30% of my squad."

Both are very similar. What Jones said is more verbose. Mourinho definitely said similar in the MUTV interview:

"This is not the step for anything. The majority of the players that played are not going to play [against Leicester]. Some of them are not even going to belong to the squad. Accumulation of matches that is killing - progressively - my brave boys because I have some brave boys. The ones that are always there and ready to put everything for the club and for the group."

Another quote people aren't sure about:

Neil Jones tweeting on Sanchez: "Look, do you want him to be very happy with the players he has around him? We are here just to survive and to have some not very ugly results. Alexis is the only striker we have. And the poor man is there trying his best."

Simon Stone tweeting on Sanchez: "We're playing here just to try + survive and have some not very ugly results. Alexis is the only attacking player we have. The poor man is trying his best with the frustration of someone who wants more. Alexis, Mata, Darmian, Eric, Pereira. Phenomenal attitude"

Bits in bold both are corroborated with each other but both have an extra sentence or two that isn't mentioned by the other.

Apart from the crap posted from that Castael twitter account, every quote that has been posted looks to be true as they've been tweeted by multiple journalists.

I'm tired of fecking preseason excuse.
Result is meaningless sure but the way players are coached is worrying.
It's the same shit we saw last two seasons.

As if kids were told to pass sideway or smash it as hard as they could. Utterly clueless, we played without a system ( I'll take LvG's psuedo philosophy over no philosophy at all anytime) and almost everyone granted permission not to give a feck

Preseason has been pointless for us and Mou was right, why would anyone pay money to watch this crap.

I honestly dont care about the result.. Yeah, we would have laughed at Liverpool had we won 4-1.. but no one would have taken it seriously as an indicator of how the season would pan out.

Said it before the Milan game and will say it again, this US tour is pointless. All this travel cant be helping with the fitness preparation either.

Hope this is the end of US tours for a while. Stay at home. Go to Norway/Ireland.

We'll probably go to China next year

Ah.. thanks.

We haven't learned much today, but it's always a black eye to lose to Liverpool. Especially by that margin, friendly or not.

All I'll say for now is that if Romero is out for any length of time, then Lee Grant is looking just fine.

...Castro Pereira, not so much.

I didn’t get to see the second half (I was watching Giovinco run the show for Toronto FC and I saw Altidore score a goal ), but it sounds like we played pretty well. I’ve seen Shaqiri’s goal, ridiculous.

No idea what Mourinho was on about post match or why he didn’t use more of the squad he had like Klopp did? Feck it though, pre-season is supposed to be the fun before the meaningful stuff starts.

Would not surprise me he's so manipulative. I hope the board doesn't fall for it. It won't make a difference who we buy, we'll play the same shit and he'll still be complaining about something else.

It’s pretty counterproductive to be this negative before the first competitive ball has even been kicked. Best to wait to see what sort of results we actually deliver.

I feel about Mourinho the same way I felt about Deschamps. Outdated, negative tactics, and to borrow a phrase from Zlatan, drives a Ferrari like a Fiat. Winning the world cup kind of shut me up in the best way imaginable. Now a world cup is a much more different proposition than a season in the league but if he manages to get his players to totally commit to his style of play, he may be able to shut a lot of people up. The issue with Mourinho is that, unlike Deschamps, he is a divisive figure whereas Deschamps united players. The latter has made some questionable selection choices, but it's all because he wants to have the right personalities playing for him. I think at this time, only half of the team is the personality of players that will respond to Mourinho, and the problem is as times goes by that half will become a third, and eventually he'll have most of the players turning against him. His ego is too big, and the fact that in two years he has never taken the blame for anything that's happened at the club but has had no issue laying the blame at his players' feet, no player is going to respond well to that. I can't see this zebra changing his stripes, and I'm still firmly on the side that his third season will be another spectacular combustion that will lead to him leaving the club. He's a miserable sod, and it's contagiously spreading throughout the club and the season hasn't even started yet.

found a larger chunk of the conference. Jones said is pretty much spot on. So much for fake news.

Was at the game and the players looked half-arsed from the start. Agree that Sanchez and Herrera might have tried a few things, but largely the players looked content with not trying which made me wonder whether they were told not to strain themselves.
Meanwhile Pool had Salah and Mane in first half and some other players and the class difference clearly showed.
I was surprised that Jose did not give other players some mins. Pointless or not, if you sign up as a club to play a game in preseason, at least use it for giving some young guys a run. It doesn't hurt anyone if some youngsters (who will not be in squad perhaps) gel a bit with senior players.
De Gea did some training pre-match, probably for the fans.
Pool however was interested in getting some game time and they scored 4 goals because they bothered to attempt to make it a game.

Thanks. Yeah, for anyone wanting to know where it is, go to 4:40. There is one word that is wrong in Jones' quote and that is the first 'him' should be 'me' so it reads 'Look, do you want me to be very happy with the players he has around him?' and then the rest.

Annoying it still isn't the full conference. Hopefully by this time tomorrow there'll be a full video out and I can round up all the quotes for a different thread.

How was this ? As I didn't watch it and I am not gonna watch a single preseason game as they mean feck all.
Still people are mad to watch them games and complain about it. It is preseason + Jose+ World Cup.. What do you expect ?

Yeah true.. think it's always tough for reporters live tweeting these, always paraphrasing and you definitely lose context.

My point was more in reference to those claiming he was just trying to stir pot and making stuff up without even waiting for the video or audio.

Yeah, the reporters do the best they can and wouldn't deliberately make something up as they know they'd risk having conference privileges revoked.

I watch the videos and have to go back 2 or 3 times to get everything down. I'm impressed with how they manage to get the gist of things in real time.

Everyone in Ann Arbor, stop being so miserable and come to Rick's

Watching the post match press conference, it is not that bad or negative as some are making it out to be. Sure Mourinho needs to cut on talking about few things as they are spinned as negative but there is truth to it. For instance, "not my squad" bit is true. TFM, Tuanzebe, J. Pereira, Mitchell and the youngsters who came off bench won't be part of the first team squad of 23-26 players. They will be either on loan or playing in U23s/U18s. So in that sense, he can't make out anything from performances. However, by going on and on with it does bring a feeling of negativity to it. He can simply say that we played lots of players who most likely won't be part of first team squad but these will be opportunity for them to gain experience and learn and it was a learning experience for them. Also he didn't sound that downbeat on transfers. He is expecting only one addition and has given a shortlist of 5 players for it. He has right to expect that club like United has to get one from 5 shortlisted players. Still he said, if we won't get any one more, we will fight with the players we have.

I liked how Pereira was included in players he praised. Full of praise for efforts of many first team squad which is good to hear. Just hoping Smalling, Bailly and Shaw injuries are not serious and we are able to put out decent XI for first couple of games. Thereafter most others should be back and we will see how we go from there. No point being all negative about team prospects already and talk about Mourinho sacking as that's not going to happen, yet.

I've never enjoyed pre-season and this pre-season has been a joke for a lot of teams. Less than 2 weeks until United play their first match and majority of the first team hasn't trained. City still have a huge part of their squad missing, Spurs are playing against Spurs with 8 players on the bench instead of the usual 13-14. It really isn't even pre-season yet.

You often see players that join a club in August to struggle to begin with. We'll see whole teams playing subpar this season.

José didn't play 3 youngsters and Shaw who's injured. It's better to give McTominay or Pereira 90 minutes since they are two players that are going to be part of the squad this season instead of 2 players that won't feature at all.

Dont disagree with you.

But I think mourinhos natural inclination is to take a negative/defensive stance. Theres multiple ways to make the same point.

For instance, he could easily have just said this was a great opportunity for some of his younger players to play against a mature premier league team and that theyd learn from it.

I actually love mou pressers, had a good lol about the baseball comment. Think they're great entertainment, but I do think alot of what's happening/reactions are self inflicted.

Sometimes the us v the world thing gets old.

Sanchez was completely isolated in the game but he never stopped trying. I find many things wrong with the Mourinho, but this comment isn’t anything to get upset about.

Yep. It's all about how you put a spin on it. He's banging on and on about the negatives and it's like he's isolating himself from the performances and separating youth players from the team. They're ALL part of Manchester United. There are much different ways to handle it. You can be a negative cnut like he's being, or look at his closest rival Pep:

Or look at Klopp and what he says about all that, or how he dealt with Clyne leaving to have a child vs Mourinho on Martial. Does it make a huge difference to the players and their performances? Probably not. But it just creates a needless sense of negativity and probably isn't great for the youth players themselves to hear how much your manager wishes he didn't have to play you.

Bang on the money

So why doesn't Jose play the bench regarless of the result if he doesnt want to risk injury to his players. Just play them the minutes they need and that is it.

I was just going to say that poor results when you have a depleted squad are nothing unusual. But the atmosphere/vibe/mood of the club and the intent/fluidity of the football just seems off. Whether you have 20 first teamers available or 10, we have to have a certain blueprint to our football that is definitive and lifts everyone involved. Were just making it up as we go. Better players means better results. Worse players means worse results. But nothing that binds everything together. And the doom and gloom appears to be suffocating. Jose has been in the job for two years now. Two years. He sounds like a newbie who has walked into a job where everything is a mess rather than having been at the helm for a good while now.

And some of those comments are ridiculously harsh on the kids. These are your players. If they are Manchester United players they are your players. At this point, Perisic and Willian are probably more who he considers his players than his non favourite bunch at United.

Am not bothered by the result but, very much by how really bad we are at simple football - at least what should be simple football for a club like Man United. That we simply can't play out of the back, we don't have the ability to get past what was many times a press that was not even that energetic. Not sure what is being coached in the club at this point. There wasn't even a pattern of play. With Liverpool even their youngsters seem to know what is expected of them but, our whole squad seemed clueless. It was hit and hope for the most part.

Perreira, Sanchez big positives and when Fred came on, he seemed to have a good energy about him and was able to play quickly around Liverpool with Perreira - there was actual movement between them.

It seems mourinho is happy when players play injured/not matchfit for him, then when they do themselves more damage feels hard done by when has no players to choose from

Weren't we supposed to be at the cusp of greatness because the likes of Chong, TFM, Tuanzebe and co? Its seems that the hype train has hit us big time.

It was a friendly. They had a fairly strong team we had mostly youngsters and it means more to them.

Relax.
Think people are more worried about the style of play rather than the result. Most people thought we would lose anyway due to the teams put out and they are slightly ahead of us in their preparations. The style of play does not bode well for the season.

Why does the loss hurt when it's only a friendly? Sob.
Because it’s Liverpool. But at the end of the day we have to remember that this is a meaningless practice tournament. Tells us very little about how things will happen next season.
Watch us beat Real Madrid on Wednesday and it will all be euphoria round here.

Mourinho said Rashford and Jones are going to come back earlier and he hopes other players will decide to as well.
So is it up to the players? If a player decides to take a longer period then is it fine?
Spoiled cnuts. We have our season starting in few days. Jose moaning, board not supporting and players on holiday. It's a mess before it even started.
