Portuguese media outlet, A Bola, reports that United scouts have been present at nearly every Benfica match since January.

Reports say that United has been keeping tabs on three players: Victor Lindelof (Swedish defender. Primarily a center back but could play in other roles) Nelson Semedo (Right back) and Ederson (potential replacement for De Gea).

The United-Benfica link has been consistent for months and Jose has a knack for buying Portuguese talents.

If these reports are true, do we need these players?

They're probably not true. If they are then I wouldn't mind Semedo.

One thing though, didn't Jose himself say that these links between us and Portuguese teams aren't true and that we won't be buying anyone from there?

Don't know about Lindelof and Ederson, but I like the look of Semedo. It's Portuguese media linking Benfica players to United though, so 99.99% chance it's BS.

If Portuguese media says Jose is our manager I will double check going in ManUtd.com. That's how reliable they are.

Ah. Another A Bola update. Good to know some things never change.

Semedo + Sanches were the only ones I was remotely interested in, but let's be honest we get linked to every player they have

Who is this Sanches ?

Renato. The one Bayern swooped in for. Had a great Euros but is apparantly still quite raw for them now he's settled and the hype has died down.

I thought the OP was referencing scouts watching Benfica players?
He was at Benfica last season, I imagine people above are referencing him as someone we were constantly linked to but never actually happened.

Ahh right. I'd love for us to buy him, but that appears unlikely at the moment.

Lindelöf looks to have the passing from the back we need, the few times I've seen him. He looked very quick against Dortmund as well. Really curious what Mourinho will do regarding central defence.

People who do not know about ederson, well he is a fantastic talent/player. Just 24 i think and he is great with his feet and with his hands. Perfect goalkeeper, would not be disappointed if we signed him as a replacement for De gea. Only problem is he goes down too easily. I remember watching both legs of benfica vs dortmund, he was superb in ist but the team gave up in second and conceded 4 . He even saved a aubameyang penalty, made 5-7 really good saves.

Well Yeah we need Lindelof, he has some serious potential, and 5 cb's is what we require for all season. Semendo right now might struggle the same as shaw under mourinho.

Didn't Lindelof sign a new contract?

Ederson Moraes is a great goalkeeper, actually one of my favourites to replace de Gea if he'd leave. Think he has some similarities to de Gea as well.

But how likely is it that a player will be bought from that club? Rumours, year after year, but no player is ever bought...

Not convinced (yet, may i add) with Semedo and Lindelof but Ederson looks like a real deal. He's a great keeper and i think will be the Brazil NT keeper in the next years. Oh and there have been consistent reports about Guardiola being interested in him as well. More interest reported than United tbf

I'd just like a transfer window without being linked to players from Benfica.

Wouldn't believe a Portuguese paper if they told me the sky was blue.

In the business of sport what papers are in what relates to transfers? Certainly not english ones. The lesser evil is "O Jogo". Not perfect but much better than "A Bola" that is nothing but a Benfica mouthpiece.

Didn't mean any offense. i was talking more in relation to a Portuguese paper linking us with a player.

That part right there probably makes this whole thing not true.

No offense taken mate, no worries. My point was that on reporting transfers vast majority of the specialized media is crap. I used the english example because i´m on an United messageboard. Italy and Spain are the pinnacle of shite speculative transfer reporting. But like i said "A Bola" is really Benfica's mouthpiece. Journalism comes second for them.

He just extended it one year.
If that was the case, then he had 3 years to go even before he signed the new contract. So rather than the number of years left he is contracted there, him signing a new contract has meant that the reported €30m release clause that activated this summer no longer exists and if we want him this summer, we have to pay a considerably higher fee to get him.

When was the last time we signed a player from Benfica? Last transfer business we had with them was Bebe, maybe they're trying to get back at us for that.

We would never get him for 30 m euros from a Portuguese club, If we need cheaper deals for top potentials we need to sign players when they are in very small clubs just like Fergie used to do.

The Portuguese media are so bad, will link their nan with us as long as we're linked with something down there.

Yeah I can see Ederson moving to City.

Sure, but that doesn't mean we should pay his €60m release clause he's got now. Which was why I was confused at to why Lindelof signed the contract in the first place, as if he planned on moving to another club, he's just made his chances a lot slimmer. Unless of course, he has a verbal agreement to move for some set fee (greater than his previous release clause) in the summer. But then again he would have just asked for that value to be his new release clause and not as high as €60m.

Ignore benfica links. Theyre a selling club and try to drum up interest in their players with false rumours.
