Man City 2020/21 - General discussion

So they might finally win the Champions League, a tournament that they have been instrumental in making absolutely pointless as of last night.

What a perfect encapsulation of a truly disgusting project
Just for once put your obsessive hateful pointscoring of City to one side and see the bigger picture.
United's own legend ex-players can do it but not you.

 its a separate and completely worthy point. They've pumped billions into winning a trophy that they are now at the forefront of making irrelevant. Poetic justice at its very best, unfortunately occurring in terrible circumstance.

Man City accelerated this process more than anybody and if you were ever their happy little cheerleader you're reaping the rewards now

It's nothing of the sort.
It's your laughing hyena like attempt to deflect from a shameful attempted cashgrab that both of our clubs are complicit in by suggesting that City have made it inevitable that the Old Money Clubs should respond in this fashion.

Gonna be hilarious when you win the Europa you've now rendered useless after pissing all over Matt Busby's legacy too. We're in this together sunshine, its kinda sad when United in particular are at the forefront of this and all you can do is still take shots at City but you're the definition of bitter like you claim City fans to be. Its like bully who finds out his mom's been banging the next door neighbours dad and makes fun of the kid next door for it.

We'll both be supporting Sligo Rovers next season, get ready for the fun.

I would say that United started the slippery slope when they floated on the stock exchange.

Next came the Premier League.

And now the ESL.

Invite the money men in and this is where it ends up.

We're patently in the same boat. I've been pretty vocal in my disgust and will absolutely stop following United if this goes ahead.

You don't like it of course, but away from the broad horrible problem, there is the hilarity of project Abu Dhabi reaching its long held goal, the one guardiola sold himself out for, as it becomes utterly pointless. It's almost shakespearian.

Seeing city fans moan about sporting merit is almost too rich to take.

I posted this in may 2018, 3 years ago. Course it was just bitterness.

'Their spending is absolutely disgusting. Every team has to try match it. United will, Chelsea will, klopp has already changed his entire philosophy, Tottenham need to try stay in top 4 arsenal need to tryy match Tottenham and if English clubs emerge as top in Europe over the next few years then Europe's clubs will have to outspend too

City have completely skewed the criteria required to aim for and try maintain success and have directed clubs in a direction that is unsustainable. They and their Dubai money are a plague on British football and when the post mortems are being written, trying to pinpoint why football lost so many fans and became just another sport, city will have been the main causative factor.'

It was nonsense then and its nonsense now. Yet again blaming City for United being run by feckwits who first turned ye into a Europa club and then sold ye out in a heart beat. Its sad. Your Ed and the Glazers were looking to turn football into the fecking NFL long before City. But hey enjoy your excuse.

You can't accept any reality about the middle East state you support without talking about United. Its pathetic. I can. I can and do recognise Uniteds huge failings and have contempt for them now and Woodward for years. Youve simply never been able to separate the two just because of utter denial. City played a huge part in ruining the sport and once they danced around ffp this was inevitable

Not much point discussing it any more as the game is pointless now. But you go enjoy winning the competition you've burned to the ground. Ill be laughing at how right i was

Fans of top 6 clubs using ESL as a stick to beat each other

If anything, it's been reported that Liverpool, Arsenal and Utd accelerated it.

Yes once city exploded the game, mocked ffp and made it impossible for barca real Juve and Milan clubs to dream of catching them from here. So what do you want me to say that Uniteds owners are vile scum and ill support full boycott if this happens? Already done.

City fans can't ever seem to reconcile how much their 'club' destroyed the sport and 'merit' without turning it into a conversation about United.

The years of denial and giddily celebrating abu Dhabi fc have come home to roost

This one put equal blame on both clubs and asked you to stop your tiresome sniping fir a day or two at least but that's seemingly beyond you.

It's over now. You can stop worrying about it.

Im glad i was proven right and that abu Dhabi fc never won the CL when it was important. They'll be in their element now with the new plastic tournament

Poor city fans. They were already going pants-on-head mental trying to balance the idea of being an oil state funded title purchasing machine while simultaneously also somehow being The Little Engine That Could. Now they have to turn on the owners that have bought every bit of their success and who they know they'd be nothing and nowhere without.

The Bluemoon meltdown makes the likes of us and RAWK look like our teams have had a bit of a shit result against Palace or someone by comparison.

what on earth are city doing getting involved in this by the way?
There’s enough other big clubs not involved for city not to feel pressured to get involved
The owners don’t need the money so why have they made this play? Potentially driving a wedge between them and supporters and sabotaging the best chance they’ve had at winning the Champions League.

Furthermore, they’re joining hands with clubs who spent years trying to stop their spending.

Utter morons.. a what an absolute own goal here.

City don't need money, but their owners want exposure which being in this SL will provide more of than the current CL.

As for other big clubs, will not count them as some examples yet. PSG could simply be delaying as they do not want to jeopardize that WC in Qatar. They could always join later, afterall three positions are still vacant and they certainly have not denounced this deciaion from my knowledge.

Bayern could well be joining as well, the structure of the club could be what is stopping them for now, at least according to the German posters I saw, so who knows.

The problems have been there for a while now, people just pretended to not see it, now the curtain has been ripped off and we are seeing the greed and corruption that was there all along.

The sad part is both sides are terrible, and the fans are getting shafted as always.

Your so bitter that your in the City thread trying to push the blame of Ed Woodward turning you into a cash prostitute for the Glazers you're trying to blame City, cry me a river. You came in here and posted your 3 year old post trying to say United were forced to this. I quoted it and it got the response it deserved. Liverpool like victim mentality.

Like you are learning the hard way with your club now and should have when Ed started pimping you out as City fans have said for years, your club aren't your owners and your owners aren't your club. We are owned by a murderer and dictator but he isn't our club. You are owned by leeches and a pimp selling you out for those leeches they aren't your club.

Suck it up sunshine, you might as well laugh you've been crying like a spoiled child having his toy taken away for the past 10 years. Ed Woodward and FSG that pushed this along with Arsenal, ironic, when two clubs whose match fixing got the other one in the league in the first place.

Your shit stinks the same as everyone elses but keep saying "United are wrong but City caused this". The fact this shit is going on and you feel the need to come in and take digs when fans should be united against this muck is proof enough. Probably a liverpool supporter in the 80's with these levels of blame and that kind of whataboutery.

Same as everyone else its a power grab not a money grab. Its about control.

But city don’t need power and exposure. They’ve got it. They’re cleaning up trophies every season, growing their fanbase in the process. Can spend what they want. They shat on the FFP. What more control do they want?

With United Arsenal Inter Milan etc you can see they’ve lost control and been in the shit for a few years but city didn’t need this.

There seems to be this idea the the SL is going to open new eyes and exposure to football. It isn’t. Football is massive. The massive tournaments are the World Cup, champions league and premier league. The super league is tin pot in comparison to that.

You're just making stuff up now. For how many years have you buried your head in the sand and rationalised and reasoned and used every trick in the book. Eg im hardly going to talk about Woodward in here am i? I hate our owners elsewhere. But you want to deflect as usual. United weren't forced anywhere and I don't claim they were. Deflecting again.

But i believe and have every right to and am not alone in this, that the disgusting piece of shit club you've played cheerleader for with your hands over your eyes made this more possible than it ever could have been. Your saving grace now is that the other clubs are run by pieces of shit too and you get to pretend we were all in the same boat since you sold your soul.

I know that i had some principles and followed United with my eyes open. My attitudes changed hugely in 2013 when Ferguson left and Woodward took over. You and every newfound city fan like you spent a decade deflecting and doing mental gymnastics because you liked the shiny toys you were getting.

City do need exposure, and no they have not got it yet. They still don't have the following that United, Inter or Arsenal have despite being successful and the other clubs being poor. Their fanbase is still small compared to these other clubs, and without these clubs there won't be much interest in them. The interest in the CL is largely because of the competition, but if that competition leaves a lot of the people will lose interest. This could be applied to any team, even us.

Also, they don't have any real attachment to the CL either to stick with them out of some loyalty. They don't want to quit the league and neither do the other teams,

Our owners and Arsenal don't care about competing for anything other than top 4, and that too because the CL gives more money. This SL thing basically guarantees them money every year, which is what they want.

The SL is not going to do anything special, but with most of the big teams with the most followers there that will get the attention. As for WC, for the neutrals it really is not that important as trophy. Not to mention a lot of the NT games are extremely dull compared to club football, which in itself can be quite boring as well. The CL is big because of these clubs, without which it will lose viewers and the same for PL. Football maybe massive for some, but for others their only interest is held by the teams they support and have no interest in the game beyond that.

Slight contradiction in bold..
I’d imagine city fans will still be interested in watching Manchester City.

I’m not really sold on it to be honest. It’s all based on assumptions/short term thinking. City already have a steadily growing fanbase, achieved by winning trophies such as the Premier League. They’re a Champions league regular. You’ve said yourself they’re not leaving the PL which is still a massive attraction and I guarantee will still be bigger than the super league.

The idea that going off to play in this vanity project will significantly expand city’s reach doesn’t make much sense. After all won’t they just be playing in this competition with teams with bigger fan bases then theirs. Are they gonna poach those clubs fans?

I mean this decision has alienated the majority of their current fans living in the U.K. who would be season ticket holders, merchandise buyers, sky and bt package holders.
So what we’re saying is that by going off to play in the super league they’ll be able to attain a currently non existent base of “extra fans” and secure more income based on this. Completely ignoring the potential damage being done with the relationship with current fans.

My point regarding the World Cup is that it’s the elite tournament neutrals watch. The super league isn’t going to change this and suddenly expose city to an untapped audience.
You’re talking about it being boring and suggesting neutrals don’t care when it’s literally the most viewed sporting event in the world.

Id imagine though that your thinking is exactly that of the owners. You take away the giant down payments and really and truly everything beyond that is projected and wishful.

More rumours afoot of city being under investigation by the PL.

I can’t find anything about what it is about other than it appearing to be about them appealing the decision by a judge that it should all be made public and city want it to be kept private.

Personally can't stand United fans complaining about how another team has money.

Man United are not far behind City in spending over the past 10 years.

Bent bastards

Yes, because with the money he has spent on an already good squad with great players in order to have TWO CL level starting elevens, he eventually has to beat these kind of teams over two legs.

I never realized that City also had 2 CL level starting 11, weird that teams weren't running after all these world class players before Pep made them better...

I don't think that you fully understood my question. I asked about if Guardiola would have blame to not win the UCL this year, I was not questioning about him not winning since 2011, he has a lot of blame in many of those ones.

Also, PSG is a team also full of world class players, specially an attack that would be a huge threat to any top team and they already eliminated Bayern. If City gets eliminated on penalties, but playing well and with Guardiola not overthinking, not making tactical mistakes, I think he would have no blame this year.

Alsp, saying that City has two CL winning teams is a big exaggeration. Take out De Bruyne, Stones, Foden, Gundogan, Rúben Días, Cancelo and so on, are they still favorites to win the UCL? Of course not.

I wonder how does it look compared to pre-Woodward years.

I am jealous of them tbh. Can't even remember what winning a trophy feels like and these lot win trophies for fun.

Don’t care who they are. If you spend a billion on top of an already very good team, you have to do it eventually.

Not two CL winning teams, but certainly two top four teams. They have had the benefit of rotation and their league has been basically done for a while. They have Laporte, Mendy, Walker, Fernandinho, Foden, Bernardo Silva and Aguero on the bench. It’s ridiculous.

You can’t spend the money he has done and not win it eventually. It would be a failure if he doesn’t win it at City

PSG aren’t a super side. Now is as good a time as any to finally leave his mark and achieve something special with City. Winning leagues and league cups with far and away the best team and the best squad is par for the course with a billion spent.

If you lose on penalties, it means you didn’t play well enough to win outright over two legs.

It’s a billion pounds later, forget the Carabao, he has to get it done.

Two top four teams is more acceptable to say.

Again, you are looking with the perspective of Guardiola not winning in years, I'm only talking about now in a vaccum. My point is that only one team can win the UCL and anyone can win in games between top teams. Flick, for example, won last year, but lost now. My point is that if City plays very well, but somehow loses on penalties, Guardiola won't have blame. Specially if he doesn't do tactical mistakes and plays the same team that has dominated the PL.

Also, PSG is no super team, but their attack is so amazing that they are a big threat in that regard, it's how they eliminated Bayern despite being mostly worse. Bayern and City are the best teams in Europe in this season.

Probably about the retrospective points deduction due to premier league FFP breach. Ageuroooo cancelled? You'll would love that  . Guess will have to wait see if they win the appeal...

This document is in Google cache, it's definitely legit..

no doubt. It’ll get dealt with, I’m sure

I didn’t doubt it’s legitimacy really. Just thought it slightly odd that it wasn’t mentioned much elsewhere if I had heard about it

I actually think he has been very practical this year, going back to a double pivot and working from a more solid base. So yeah, I think there is every chance he goes into this game with a more suitable approach.

I just think it’s impossible to talk about football in a vacuum, or to isolate certain games. He has thrown away many ties in the past to inferior teams, so sooner or later, he has to do it. Losing to PSG would be another failure, even on penalties.

He might well get unlucky, but you just can’t keep failing after investing so much. Sooner or later you need to do something special with the resources you have. It’s impossible to view it in a vacuum because he needs to prove he can do this after such a massive investment and such a big advantage.
