Major surgery needed?

To get back in the top 4 we easily have enough. To even think about winning the CL or the league again we will need surgery in the form of 2 CMs, 1 LB, 1 Winger and 1 experienced CB.

The first thing the new manager should do is take a look and get rid of those who are just not good enough like Ashley Young.

After the obvious departures like Rio, Vidic, Evra, Anderson, Giggs and Ferdinand if you have a good look at our team you can see that we need a right back to compete with Rafael, a left back that can go straight into the starting 11, 2 central midfielders and a winger and maybe an experienced leader at the back if we've got enough funds. Jones and Smalling are talented but we need someone to motivate our team when we're down and pick up players when they're under-performing. With all those experienced departures, we will lack leaders in the team.

Listening to Sky Sports News, Jamie Redknapp is harping on about how he feels we need 'major surgery', and we need a lot of players to compete with Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, and yes, he even mentioned Liverpool.

Is it really that bad?

I personally feel we need four players in the Summer who will walk into our starting XI and we'll be fine. A centre midfielder, left back, winger and maybe a centre back.

Other than that, I think our squad is fine, and that we're nowhere near as bad as some people are making out to be.

Opinions.

I had to laugh at Redknapp including Liverpool in there. If Rodgers can get a decent team with a quality front line going, the very thing Ferguson was accused of last year, then a quality United manager, with a couple of key acquisitions, should be capable of same. It's the ability of the manager, and his skills at motivating and utilising players, that counts. IMHO.

The job next season is to catch Liverpool and City, so it is important to match their quality with new signings. The main worry is that with no European football the biggest stars will think twice about coming until our fortunes change.

I dont think major surgery is needed. It is tempting to reach this conclusion because of the extremity of the symptoms, but the surgery required should be fairly routine. Three or four new players, including at least one outstanding midfielder, plus more assured leadership, and we will be right back up there IMO.

The thing is, in order to get the best out of the likes of RVP, Rooney, Mata, Rafael , you need quality players around them who will push them to play even better and get the best out of them. RVP's form last season was so excuisite, he was influencing players around him to perform even better. Refresh this team with 3-4 quality signings not just squad players, actual world-class players and we will see a different team. Add a manager who is passionate and has an attacking mindset in regards to playing style and facies giving youth a chance, you might see a completely different, refreshed United team.

In other words, signings are needed but no need for a complete "overhaul". Shaw, Carvalho, Garay, creative midfielder like Kroos and a proper right back to compete with Rafael and we are looking at a completely different team here.
Best case scenario:

----------------------De Gea------------------

Rafael--------Garay----Smalling----Shaw

------------Carvalho/Carrick----Kroos-------------

Januzaj/welbeck----Mata--------Kagawa

--------------------RVP/Rooney--------------

I see that team competing for the title. Managers like Van Gaal, Klopp would be well able to attract players of that quality, even without C.L

If we don't back into Europe next year, then yes, that could be the case. I can't imagine it will preclude us from signing useful players this summer. 7th place, no Europe - we're still Manchester United and we represent a good career move for a majority of players. Certainly enough of a step up to get the 3-5 players we need.

There is more than enough quality in the team and youth system to get us back into a top 4 position as-is. Bring in the players we need and add in some depth under the right manager and we may well be title challengers again next season.

Indeed. Comments like "we have enough for top 4" underestimates the other sides quality and the loss of major players - including 3 of the first choice back 4 of the last few seasons.

Some seem convinced that players who haven't performed this year, and some who didn't perform particularly well last year are suddenly going to become superstars.

I agree. With the players going we lack experience at the back and leaders in the side.
