Rene Meulensteen, Utd 1st team coach, reveals Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg is #MUFC first choice to replace VDS

DuckerTheTimes James Ducker
"Stekelenburg is indeed the ‘keeper who is at the top of our wanted list,” Meulensteen said #MUFC

Mike Phelan says #MUFC have also kept close tabs on Rui Patricio, Sporting Lisbon keeper - "He’s a young ‘keeper with enormous potential"

Seems a bit strange for us to be making it clear who we want.

I doubt we would make public statements as to who our transfer targets are.

I know that the press has made a big deal about things, to be fair, I don't think Ferguson has made up his mind yet. To be quite honest I think he will scout his options very carefully. Stekelenburg, Adler, Neuer, Akinfeev, De Gea (I dont really think he is a option, he will move for someone more experienced), Lopez and Rui Patricio has been mentioned.

Adler for £17m certainly is value for money. If we have to pay £30m for Lloiris, Neuer or Akinfeev that is a very simple option. Everyone will learn and become better after they join us. The root of all learning is motivation, if Adler gets his dream fulfilled and gets to join; He will learn a lot fast. Even if he fecks up (which I doubt will happen) We will get most of the money back selling him back to Germany or someone.

I want;
Adler
Neuer
Stekelenburg
In that order.

This is really confusing me, De Gea has played and won a major European final, something none of the others have experienced, yet he is inexperienced in comparison.

Huh?

Adler or Neuer please. I think these two are the class of the lot and being young have bright futures ahead of them.

Neuer put me off big time in the world cup when he came out for a cross and .... shut his fecking eyes (without there being any chance of an imminent collision).

Is this not illegal?

When have United ever announced their targets?

Igor Akinfeev has 294 for CSKA Moscow and another 46 for Russia
Rene Adler has 154 matches for Leverkusen and another 9 for Germany
Manuel Neuer has 174 matches for Schalke and another 15 for Germany
Maarten Stekelenburg has 236 matches for Ajax and another 34 for the Netherlands
Hugo Lloris has 126 matches for Lyon, 77 matches for Nice and 19 matches for France.
De Gea has 60 matches for Atletico Madrid.

On top of that, De Gea will probably be the most expensive option.

So purely on the number of games rather than the size of the games?

I'd rather have someone who has proven himself in huge games than someone who has played lots of games at a lower level tbh.

There are more "huge games" in Germany than in Spain as there are more big teams, teams are also closer, Leverkusen, Schalke, Dortmund, Bayern Munchen etc. Experience is extremley important for goalkeepers, learn of their own mistakes do some errors. The German school is also a damn good school. To be the first team goalie at Leverkusen with Butt behind you - that is pressure in such a young age.

If you have matches for the most prestigious goalkeeping nation in the world which is Germany whoever the best goalkeeper is they always have a candidate and almost 200 matches behind you at the age of 26 you are experienced.

Of course Akinfeev is not the most experienced because he have the most games, he is also in the weakest league.

Would you consider Bayern vs Leverkuson to be bigger than a Europa league quarter final? Never mind the semi or the final itself, all games in which De Gea performed.

Well that is true, De Gea does have that EURO League win. He/Atletico Madrid did not perform the following year though, they are already out. He did not blow me away against Rosenborg

Lindegaard is a good goalkeeper with a capital G. If the battle becomes between him and De Gea, I am not sure De Gea will be the winner. I want continuity from day one (hopefylly) Scholes and Giggs are both considering retirement after next season. They have the Spain and England is also too very different leagues, The English game is more physical, more pressure in the box, for example Stoke and Newcastle - in such games I think De Gea might struggle. Even though the Norwigian league is a lot weaker than the Spanish, that is something England and Norway have in common, and that Lindegaard handles well. How good is De Gea there? Damn few knows, Spanish clubs keep it in their feet as much as possible. He might not not speak English well, and his statements is that he is happy on Atletico Madrid, and to be quite honest, with him having 20 years left of his career, if I were him I would be staying put.

Who is the best English speaker is also relevant. Communication is very important for a goalie. Experience is more vital to a goalkeeper than any other position, so I disagree with you, number of matches are actually damn important.

And hey, both Stekelenburg, Lloris and Akinfeev has more matching than the Germans, I still perfer them.

In that case it will be a mistranslation of "one of our top targets"
Yeah, it will go something like this:

What are the key positions to strengthen as far as Man Utd are concerned?

> Well VdS is retiring so one of the the top targets is a new keeper

Is Stekelenburg on the radar?

> He's a very good keeper, we've looked at him ............................................... as we've looked at a number of replacement options.

The dutch is a good GK, not the best option but he's a reliable one.

I like his way to interpreter the role

No matter what way you dress it up, it was still a game against Fulham. No disrespect or anything, but it's probably fair to say it's a lesser game than say a world cup quarter or semi final.
