In Holland there are more and more rumours that Manchester United are preparing a bid for Ajax and Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenburg. I think he'll be the ideal replacement for VDS. He's tall, calm, athletic and has a very good kick. He's 27 now, what is a ideal age to make the next step in his career. But SAF has to be quick because Bayern are also heavily interested.

'Stekelenburg ook bij Manchester United in beeld'

He played really well against Brazil. That's easily the best i've seen him play though. The other times i've seen him (only 5 or 6 times) he's looked alright but nothing special.

Neuer would be my pick at the moment.

If we are to buy a keeper my pick would be DDG..

He's another i've only seen a handful of times. He was really good in the Europa League final. Is he even in the Holland squad?

Oh is he? A name like DeGea i just presumed he was Dutch.

To be fair you're probably not helped by people calling him Van De Gea and comparing him to VdS, but yes, he's Spanish.

Looked very good whenever I've seen him play, but he's very young (even compared to Adler, Neuer & Akinfeev).

Back to the OP - I'll be honest, Stekelenburg has never wowed me, but he'd be a lot cheaper than Neuer.

well i'm sure if this rumour is true we would have gotten VDS' recommendation on it

neurer or de Gea look good also

in the case of de Gea athletico might be more happy to sell with asenjo (who was first choice start of their season)

can't help but think that this is all a season too early - VDS was as good as anyone in the world last season - he's as fit as a player 15 years his junior and i don't see that changing over the summer!

VDS for next season then we'll reassess - would you be suprised if he stayed on for 2 years - when you compare his physical condition to keepers who played on to 40 (southall became a blimp, ogrizivic looked and moved like he was 60) it is fantastic

What impressed me more and made me realize that it was not just the usual hype was the fact that he was called up to the 30 Man squad for the World cup and was cut from the 23 man squad behind Casillas, Valdes and Reina.. Which means in Del Bosque's opinion DDG was above Diego Lopez, Asenjo etc..

Ideally he should remain with Athletico for another season and then if he maintains his impressive performances we should look into the possibility of bringing him over unless ofcourse VDS is still fit and capable.. But of all the Gk's I have seen none are more re-assuring than DDG.. All seem to have a flaw in some part of their game & it is acceptable since they are all still young.. But from all of the Young and upcoming ones its quite difficult to look beyond DDG as of now..

No thank you. He's not near VDS quality. Simply not good enough and doesn't look like to be getting much better. He doesn't have age nor that much experience on his side.

Haven't seen enough of him to know whether his WC form is the exception or the norm.

From a Dutch Newbie:

"Just heard on a Dutch Football talkshow (VI Oranje, RTL 7) that Manchester United had a meeting (today) with Ajax regarding a transfer of Stekelenburg to United."

I just think we may end up going through a fair few GK until we settle on one like we did post Schmeichel.

It was 6 years between Schmikes leaving and VDS signing!!

this lad will be a hell of a lot cheaper than neuer, adler, lloris and is not a short-arse like akinfeev.

haven't seen enough of de gea to say if he's the one either.

to be fair between neuer and adler, i don' even know who really is the best german keeper as if adler didn't get injured he would've been the german 1st choice this summer.

Is tony coton still at the club?

I've always rated him as a fairly good goalkeeper, but he was outstanding against Brazil... And then if I recall he made a right clanger late on and nearly cost them.

For me Neuer has one very important quality we need in a keeper. Which is the ability to recover from mistakes rapid. That is what has separated VDS from all our other keepers post the Great Dane, the most.

We need a keeper with that mentality. I feel at a club like ours Neuer's skills would just get better. Even his aerial presence which is right now a bit raw. .

diego s goal reminded me of a similar cock up by van der gouw vs borussia ? About 10-12 yrs ago.

Anyone else remember that?

It isn't the fact he fecked up for the goal, that can happen to any goal keeper. It's the way he was like a rabbit in the headlights for the rest of the game. Had the Netherlands been up against someone that would have been putting pressure on the 'keeper (Germany or Spain) he would have crumbled.

You've gotta have the right mentality to make it at a big club, i don't think he has it.

He's had barely anything to do all tournament and when he has had something to do he's struggled with it.

Ajax forced to sell Suarez, Stekelenburg and van der Wiel

Ajax will be forced to sell a host of their top stars this summer, according to former youth team coach Arnold Muhren. The Amsterdam side’s poor financial situation looks certain to force the sale of Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, Dutch number one Maarten Stekelenburg and right-back Gregory van der Wiel; a situation which looks likely to precipitate the departure of Martin Jol to Fulham.

Skeletonburg was a a bit dodgy at times at WC, not that it matters.

I'd take van der wiel though...

They've already sold van der Wiel to Bayern Munich, I think.

Quick!!!

Bid for Christian Eriksen!!!!

Don't want.

He had a great WC, but there was a time not long ago that he wasn't first choice for Ajax.
