Maajid Nawaz

In the least surprising turn of events 'shocker'.

Hilarious that they thought that little charade would have been viewed with nothing else other than contempt and suspicion by the very community it was targeting.

Cheerio cnuty chops, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

That's been a long time coming. He popped up on my LBC feed and I began listening to some of his shows, and he does seem to either unwittingly group innocent people with terrorists, or he does so maliciously and deliberately.

Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum or how you view the secular Vs religious debate, mainstream stations should be getting better people than this.

I've known of him since 2007 at the very least. Believe me when I tell you that it is very much the latter.

Wonder if any of his recent bollocks has caused @Raoul to change his mind on him, considering our little debate on him 6 years ago?

He's quite slimy.

Don't forget that only a few months ago, he penned this. That the Covid-19 lockdowns was an effort by the CCP to impoverish nations because :confused::confused: .

He was an interesting guy to listen to early on, especially during some of the debates about religion. Haven’t really followed what’s been going on lately. Just saw on Twitter that he’s been dabbling in Qanon type conspiracy stuff lately, so no sympathy if he’s going out of business.

I think the fact that his organisation was basically a quasi QUANGO the whole time means that anything he has said can't really be taken at face value.

The fact he then jumped off the deep end after the American right was getting more and more influence in terms of funding his organisation means it is very much a case of the tail wagging the dog, and I don't think he believes much, if anything, of what he's said since he started getting in the public eye. He only cares about himself and increasing his profile - and anything goes in furtherance of that.

God damn that's a well written load of bollocks, a lot of effort went into that. Whats the motive there? Who's he working for / funded by? If I dig far enough I'll find a link to the US right or some Russian oligarch no doubt?

The John Templeton Foundation.

US Christian conservatism.

It’s interesting how so many people who start off with one issue/agenda that aligns with a particular end of the political spectrum end up going all in on everything. Even the most obviously bat shit fringe madness.

My jaw, it dropped.

Just looked up another name on its contributor list out of curiosity, Simon Dolan - Some amateur racing driver worth £200mil, made from "accountancy services" who drove for a russian owned / Gazprom sponsored team in 2016 before stopping to focus on political activism. His activism being a pro-Brexit, pro-Trump, anti-vaccine, anti-mask, anti-lockdown, pro-Covid spreading nutjob. In 2020 Dolan founded Keep Britain Free, a group associated with the British anti-lockdown movement - He himself being a resident of Monaco & France, not Britain. This month he has just published a book "with a foreword by Nigal Farage" praising the achievements of Trump called "Trump: the Hidden Halo"...

It pains me how many cnuts with money are out to destroy this country and how much they get away with.

This is such a wild phenomenon to watch. Extremism in all its senses seems to have its own gravity.

Yeah, he turned out to be a fecking loon. Embarrassing to see so many old posts of mine defending him (albeit, on largely non-loon related matters)

The irony of him becoming radicalised by the western right, after gaining his entire cred on being a famously deradicalised Islamist is fecking wild... whichever grifter pegged him as a potential useful idiot for the cause did a grudgingly bang up job.

Crazy, isn’t it?

Although the fact he has already been radicalised once arguably meant he was more vulnerable than most to the same thing happening again. With the rebound from his first episode giving a strong tail wind towards the opposite extreme.

There’s something really fascinating about how difficult it seems to be to maintain any kind of moral compass for those that choose to immerse themselves in the culture war.

I do believe it's a form of psychosis, but maybe psychosis is too strong a term.

Maybe the Muslims on the board had a point when we said he was a disingenuous grifter?

Serious questions should be asked about his think thank and how he swindled £1 million in public enemy. I actually think his irrelevance has saved him the sack. At his peak poster brain he was legit talking about dominion rigging elections in the States, linking Fauci to the lab-manufactured coronavirus conspiracy theory.

Not sure how he's still in his LBC job. Very articulate guy, but his gradual brain worms has been quite the sight to behold.

Terrible organisation though. From wanting all Muslims spied on to McCarthyite list-production of critics of the foundation as "Islamists" and their now debunked claims regarding grooming gangs as well.

Interesting guy though. Managed to turn his life around from being a radical prisoner to grifting his way into a radio personality career after a failed attempt at a political career with the lib dems. Weird career/life trajectory.

He's a self-serving opportunist. I don't think he really believes the nonsense he writes / says per se but if it serves him and leads him to more public recognition, he'll sing like a canary.

It's why I don't really agree with looking at this from a 'deradicalised, re-radicalised' angle either.

It is entirely possible that a person can have certain views that are grounded in their own legitimate experiences and still be a for profit opportunist who will speak to anyone willing to listen. I wouldn't begrudge him for grinding out a living like this. The recent conspiracy stuff is however a different matter that is indefensible.

Always found it strange how he changed his political beliefs after being set free and returning England.

Again, you seem to be deliberately obtuse to the point that I wonder if you have even read the recent reports and facts? If it was just a recent phenomena, I'd say you know what, fair enough and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Or, I'd think this was his legitimate experiences talking. However, there have been close to 15 years of these inconsistencies and fallacies from him. If I was even halfway bothered by him and his stinking agenda, I'd share with you his blog post from when he left Hizb-ut-Tahrir, where his tone was strikingly different to the Maajid we all know, just mere months before he set up Quilliam.

You only have to follow the trail of funding and you can see the direct causation between these funds his apparent descent into right wing lunacy. A lunacy btw, which has now been totally scrubbed from all his social media after the Quilliam Foundation was wound up. Funny that, isn't it?

It's ok mate, you can admit you were wrong. No one will judge.

Look, i get that you want to take a gleeful victory lap on this issue, in which case don't let anyone stop you.

My previous point is that its possible to have a nuanced view on Nawaz. I find myself agreeing on a lot of his views regarding religion and extremism that were made about 5 or more years ago, but never cared for his self-aggrandizing style, and his apparently more recent flirtations with conspiracy theories.

A swindler striking the right chord to those financiers wanting to peddle hate. He has no interest in religion, counter-terrorism, or any other isms. The guy's goal over the last many years has been to "show me money and I'll do your bidding". It's been a lucrative market since 9/11 and he with a number of notable others exploited it well.

There are many of these around in all religions. Scammers the whole lot of them.
There is an Indian, Zakir Naik. He is a medical doctor, now styled himself as an Islamic Scholar and has a TV station. Maybe Nawaz was hoping to get into that kind of business?

I met Nawaz when he was quite young and even then it was obvious he was all about the limelight and doing whatever he could to draw attention to himself.

Naik, I've never met, but used to listen to his "mentor" Ahmed Deedat and am aware of his IPCI set up. Neither of these two claimed to be scholars. They both focussed on comparative religions and had debates with a variety of people. Naiks Peace Tv etc is in essence an extension of Deedats IPCI, just moving with the times and using social media and TV as a platform. A lot of the money earnt from these ventures is ploughed into charity projects. IPCI had bookshops where the profits would be used to give people free literature and Qurans. They would charge muslims for any books bought but give them free to non muslims. Naik does similar but gone up a few levels where he set up schools etc for those who couldn't afford education in India etc.

Unfair to put Nawaz and Naik in the same camp.

Unless you're an Indian Hindu, how is Naik a scammer?

This is very true for those who know or met Nawaz. I would suggest it's true over the last few years for even the likes of Harris, Hirsi et al. Anti Islamic rhetoric is a meal ticket, or has been for a few years now. Just look at likes of Tommy Robinson who made fortunes from it.

Not just Nawaz either. Different organisations have benefitted at different times from who ever was in power. Likes of muslim council of Britain under tony blair.

I think what's difficult for folk on forums (and I would say mainly the non muslim folk) is that many muslims have information or had contact of one sort or another with people who become "key players" that inform our opinions of individuals.

So for me I met Dr Naseem (MCB) many times as a kid. Basically he was in Birmingham doing circumcisions back in the day. We even had him come round our ways to donthhe procedure on my brother and other lads born around the same time (was easier for him to come over than take 5 babies to Brum). Nice enough guy and obviously educated and could speak English but not exactly versed in Islamic issues. He became head of mosque committees etc basically because he was a doctor and could speak English. Which was the "norm" and still happens today.

I always laugh with my father when he tells me who used to be heads of the mosque, president or general secretary, in our locality. Basically because these guys didn't even pray but were businessmen or had some education and could speak English. When on TV giving "fatwas" it would be "doh" moments

I am neither a hindu nor am I an Indian. By the way I have seen both Deedat and Naik live.
Deedat was a great guy. He admitted he doesn't know the religion and he only wants to debate.
Naik on the other hand was giving Fatwas and having a great time in 7 star resorts in places like The Maldives.

For Krishna's sake, just wear a mask will you, Majid? It's not that hard. What a weirdo.

He's the saag paneer Lawrence Fox.

I don't think he's right in the head, there has to be a psychological issue somewhere in there aside from his obvious grift. I was first exposed to him when I was living in London and in those days, for me personally (and knowing little about his background), he would have reasonable opinions on issues that were otherwise a bit sensitive to many. I completely forgot about his existence until Covid happened and it's all been a race to the bottom ever since.

feels weird watching him go full-looney

it's almost like having a mate go anti-vaxx on you or something

just because he used to seem fairly sensible (from my point of view at least)

Right now I'm on my lunch break going through my Twitter feed and a recent tweet from Nawaz spouting election fraud nonsense popped up. Him being not right in the head is a given at this point, but more insidiously I think he's grifting hard for that big money far-right media gig in America -- otherwise why would a moderately respected British political pundit go so far down each and every America-centric conspiracy rabbit holes, losing all credibility in the process, if it isn't for possible financial gains stateside. This whole thing makes even more sense when you consider that his wife is American.

I used to quite like Maajid Nawaz (especially as a “liberal” person of Muslim background)

Bit weird to see him go full retard.

Just another grifter it seems. Seems like especially right-wing grifting is lucrative.
