Luiz Gustavo

Talk of Madrid being after him. Pity, if so. Would have been ideal for us - good age and can also slot in at CB if needed.

He'd be the perfect defensive midfield player for united. Van Gaal could entice him sign on and you wouldn't have to break the bank like you would for other midfield targets.

Should have gone in for him last summer. Really is an excellent and astute defensive midfielder who would be one of the most suitable players to complement Herrera in midfield, as well as cover for Shaw and Rafael when they venture forward. Arturo Vidal is unquestionably the superior player, but Gustavo is arguably the more fitting option for our midfield.

In saying that, I'd probably prefer Vidal because of how good he is, but balance is key in midfield and if signing Vidal would jeopardise that to some extent, LVG would probably opt for Gustavo. He seemingly turned down Kroos for similar reasons and he is on the elite midfield bracket.

I agree he is perfect but he would also be costly. His buy-out clause was apparently €25m (about £18m?) but according to kicker it has risen to €35m (about the same as Herrera). It is quite a lot of money, to be fair. But I'd much rather he than Khedira or Carvalho.

Tim Vickery, when on SBS here in Australia has made the point a couple of times than big Phil bringing Gustavo into Brazils team, has made them a balanced team now. Maybe he could do similar if he joined united.

Yep, he also said about it on MOTD on Saturday. Herrera is likely to be used in a similar role, as that of Paulinho in the Brazil set-up - albeit he will see far more of the ball - so hopefully that would take pressure off of Gustavo dictating with him being able to focus on the defensive side of things more.

I was angry about him going to Wolfsburg, I even preferred him to Fabregas in the first place. Such a complete player, who would've probably been easily available last summer. And he's played excellently for years.

Thought he was the only Brazil player to come out with any credit tonight. Seemed like their only player on the pitch that gave it his all & had to spend most of it covering at centre back while Luiz did whatever he wanted. I wasn't sure about him before but fair play to him for continuing to try whilst his teammates acted like cowards.

He was tasked with covering not only centre back, but also the fullbacks positions and left back in particular. I'd be fuming at the team if I was him.

Quite right though, the only Brazil player to come out with a somewhat credible performance.

He looked pretty angry in their huddle at the end.
I imagine he must have tried to tell Luiz a few times not to act like a bellend and stay back but it's probably like talking to a shower curtain so it just seemed like he got on with it.

Agreed. I think that is a really good sign too considering how exposed his team was. He looked solid through-out the game and did his job well.

Van Gaal has worked with him previously and he is potentially available too at not so ridiculous prices IIRC due to a release clause.

Problem is that he is a limited destroyer and i personally don't like those and neither did Sir Alex. Dunno what Van Gaal's plans will be though to that respect.

Not sure if he's really that limited, he can get forward from time to time but obviously he excels in the deeper role.

He is good on the ball, can carry the ball under pressure.. underrated.

He's not that limited, IMO. Not a great passer etc, but he's very agile/quick and carries the ball forward well and can cope under pressure. He uses the ball quick and intelligently.

I think LvG could use a player like him, similar to how he's used de Jong etc.

He has silly facial hair, like a Chuckle brother.

Looked decent against France. Scored a decent headed goal. Having a great season with Wolfsburg too.....Could be off to bigger things in the summer
