If we buy him, is he going to be Matic's understudy? Because otherwise there is no point in signing him.

I rate Mctominay alot (less so Periera) but you can't seriously compare them to Pellegrini. This guy has been in the Serie A since 2014 when he debuted against Cesena. He already played with Italy 3 times, he had played in the Champions league and Europa League and he represented Italy in the European U21 championship. In total he scored 14 goals between Europa league (1 goal) and Serie A which include goals against the two Milanese clubs. His far more advanced in his development then Mctominay and Periera are.

I think Mctominay will do that job. Pogba will be the more advanced option while Fred/Herrera will link Pogba with Matic. If Pellegrini comes then he'll probably slot as cover/competition for Pogba.
Your opinion is based on having seen him play a lot? I have never seen a single game of his. But I didn't see anything in OP's youtube link to suggest he can play that role. Even Whoscored says he plays as a DM. I think Pereira would be more suited as cover for Pogba.
Barella would be my choice of ‘young Serie A midfielder’.

I've always said it, that I prefer the mezzala role. It gives me alot more independence to move and change tempo. In that role I can infiltrate defences and try to score the goals they ask me to score. Its far more difficult to do so from the back. I love the mezzala role however I can change the role of a mediano if needed. However my favourite role is that of a mezzala

The description of DM is very general. You can set up with 3 midfielders with all of them being more defensive minded.
Pereira has good attribute but as overall package, he is far from a reliable option to be back up for Pogba. He ain't exactly nailing down a position during his loan. Still being pushed out wide, so to expect him to come back and being a good enough back up option from the bench is very risky.
Pellegrini get into advance position on the pitch quite often enough. He is not the out out DM or DLP. To illustrate his position, I would compare to Bastian (I am not comparing quality or style of play). Edit: What I means is a midfielder who can be in any position of midfield and can till perform at good level. Here is about tactical understanding, football smart. It's different than a complete midfielder aka Pogba who has tools to do everything.
Edit: On second thought, young Carrick at Tottenham should be a better comparison. More attacking and more mobile than what he became as DLP. He needed to fill in defensive work, but he is not the specialist. He's not exactly Lampard, Gerrard having freedom to abandon midfield duty and act as out out attacker, but he was allow attack and join in attack just enough. Passing, linking up play, but not outright being set at the heart of the play as controller...

Not doubting Di Marzio but it's a weird tweet. Arsenal is said that doesn't want to pay release clause for Pellegrini which is roughly the same as Praet, but ready to do that for the other...
Edit: I meant it's release clause there to ensure the club can have good value if the player force the move. Pellegrini is not short of interest from other clubs so it's not like Roma would try to dump him at lower fee.

Superior. He is way more attack minded naturally than them. Yet he is one attacking player ala Giggs or Becks who can really defend. Plus he can really bear his man and is ambidextrous. We really missed out sadly

Absolutely this. I think he's the next huge player coming out of Italy, reminds me a lot of Scholes in the way that he can create space for himself and switch play effortlessly. I think Pellegrini is a good, well rounded player, and available at a decent price, but Barella is way more talented and intelligent.
Cagliari are my Italian team and I would hate to see Barella leave for any club other than United.
It's more about we're moving on from Fellaini with this as second midfield signing after Fred if it's materialized.
People often prefers wonder kids, and at the same time fail to realize some young players can get to high level later in their career. Pellegrini ability with the ball is not breath taking, but tactical understanding wise, he's shown great promise. As a squad option for fairly soft price in this market to replace Carrick/ Fellaini, with an eye for the future, it can be a very deal.
Either that, or maybe the 4312 that Mourinho used against Chelsea.
If we get Fred, then to me, with him, Herrera and McTominay, we have enough hard working midfielders. To me, our second midfielder - if we do get one, should be a back up to Pogba. A creative force, who can score goals.

Well he's an improvement on McTominay... But with all the Mourinho praise and hype about him it would seem like a strange move.
It actually says he played 23 times in a midfield 3 of CMs. 10 Subs and 3 times as a DM.
It also says he doesnt make many tackles (3rd most of those 3 CMs) or headers and that he's better going forward than he is defensively. He did make more interceptions than they did however.
If we're playing a midfield 3 then we need 6 x midfielders.
That doesnt mean we need 2x 21 year olds
We need an attack minded centre midfielder. We've currently only got Pogba.
He looks like he'll be quality but I think he'd have been an alternative to Fred as he covers a similar sort of role.
I have not seen that much of him but cant say he stood out to me as someone we should sign. Still young though I guess.
Who was the last Italian to be consistently good in the Premier League? Zola? Cudicini? I’m hesitant at buying Italians since we really haven’t seen one that’s been great since Zola. They’ve either been flashes in the pan or never really adapted to England.
If that's the case, that might be Andreas Pereira done here then. He didn't help his chances by going out on loan. Now he probably is on Jose's cr*p-list.
He's 22, has 50 starts for Roma and another 40 in Europe and Serie A for Sassuolo, has a cheap release clause and with Pogba and Herrera seemingly leaving we badly need midfielders, so this feels very believable to me.
I’d be happy with any one (or two) of Pellegrini, Barella, Tonali, Sensi or Zaniolo.

Zonali £40m-£50m - After Felix and Sancho he would be the next big talent to go after. His abilities are better suited as a midfielder, and if he could transition into a CM fulltime he could become really good.
Barella £40m - Balanced player. Can do most thing. Would fit most managers and systems.
Pellegrini £25m - Cheap, better than many of our current options, similar to Barella he can do most elements, but he is not as good technically as him, and would rather have Barella.
Tonali and Sensi seem more like Pirlo, and more specialized, but Tonali is still young and could improve. Sensi is a cheap player if we want a "spielfuhrer".

Sounds too logical for us to sign him and we'll fart about all summer and he'll go elsewhere and be class. Hope I'm wrong though.
This exact comment seems to follow pretty much any United link to a player lately. We can't sign them all and they won't all be a raging success elsewhere either.

What I have seen of him he looks really tidy and composed. He has great close control and very good technique. Passing range is a bit of an enigma as he seems to want to pass and move more than drive long range passes.
That said don´t know how he would handle the higher intensity of the PL.. But for 30m it´s an no brainer.
