London 2012 Opening Ceremony

I also can't see how people care so much about David Beckham. His boat bit seems to be a highlight for so many, but why? There were at least 10 posters yesterday who at some point announced David Beckham was the coolest man on the planet. Really now?

Surely because he's one of the most loved celebrities in England?

Guys, I think you've all missed the point. Far more serious shit went down last night than meets the eye.

http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showthread.php?t=217946

I'm watching it right now. Lots of pyramids with capstones all around the arena.

So easy to spot the symbols if you know what to look for.

I am recording the ritual for later analysis.

you will be busy......im picking up a big nuclear/atomic war theme

London Olympics Oppening Ceremony Emergency Survival Kit!

You shoud see it after enough sleep and well fed. Make shure you are not in the risk group of mind control, wich are:

People working for the federal government. People working for Intel or the military or with family ties with somebody working for them.

People working for a NWO corporation like Shell Oil.

Then better record the event and see it in mute mode.

Take vitamins suplements and multiminerals, specially B complex.

I liked that they involved the NHS, it is something to be proud of.

The fact that Boyle included it, and the amount of reaction to it, makes it a brilliant idea. Whatever the outcome or Boyles agenda, he has sparked an inclusive debate about the NHS, its purpose and its role in modern day Britain.

I'd say that is genius.

People care about him because he is the most loved celebrity? I'm not asking why he was there, that's obvious, but the never-ending love over Beckham is a bit sad.

Of course! The people who care about him are the ones who love him!

I was convinced the ceremony would be tacky as hell and full of London-type & z-list clichés. Therefore, it was a lot better than I expected.

I think the countryside missed a trick at the beginning though by not having Gazza trying to tempt a loon out of a storm-drain.

I can't see it either Hectic. Even when he was with us, he was never one of my favourites. The whole thing is bizarre to me. A very good footballer ( who wasn't even the best English footballer at his club ) has somehow metamorphosed into the coolest thing on the planet. He doesn't even have an amazing personality. I'm sure he's a very nice person but what is the fascination?

What are you talking about? I asked why Beckham is reveared as a god-man, not whether the people who care about him are also people who love him?!

I seem to have made a meal of reading sentences here.

pretty much agree with all that.

I like the lad because he still gushes about United and Fergie.

He will some day be an ambassador for the club and help promote it here in the US.

I liked him at United, wasn't one of my favourites but he was still a great player, and I understand he had the whole image here and developed it further afterwards, but how has he been transformed into some mega-star who inspires awe in people? It's David fecking Beckham.

Beckhams rise and image just highlights how superficial society as become. His over inflated status is mainly because he has been very successful as a model. Without pictures of Beckham in his underwear half the world wouldn't know who the feck he is.

edit - my wife's screen saver is a pic of a semi naked DB.

That is very true. It's all the celebrity culture isn't it? Which is why parts of the ceremony were refreshing with the classical music, the history and culture outside of sport.

Yep, that's true. I just don't understand celebrity obsession at all, it's too weird.

I hate it along with all that bling bling culture that has crept over here from Stateside.. Blame MTV. Let's do it!

I understand obsession when it comes to true living legends, like Sachin Tendulkar in India. That's a man will get a God-like treatment for the rest of his life. Rightfully so.

Beckham isn't that big an achiever in football to be honest. Half of his "celebrity" is due to his looks. You have so many more achievers who deserve standing ovations and adulation wherever they go and whatever they do.

The bling bling culture is a strange one, I understand the need for material wealth if you're from a deprived community, but when it expands into the larger cultural sphere it just becomes fecking annoying as shit.

Also, MTV are far more to blame than Hip-hop or anything else, in my opinion.

Also, I blame the Olympics.

Er... No, he's just a sportsman who whacked leather balls for a living. Why do you need to turn your sporting legends into deities or avatars? I'd say that part of the world is more celeb obsessed than most countries.

It's not MTV Spoony, although yes that's shit, it's technology giving people a further reach and bigger voice. Coupled with the belief that every other person believes their voice should be heard...by everyone.

Why?

So should Ryan Giggs for his great achievements become more than a man? More than a footballer?

Our athletes looked like chavs in their shell suits, the Yanks looked French in their chinese-made berets.

I do know that it infuriated lots of yanks because it was a commie love-fest so I'm actually saying that I loved the ceremony to any Yanks. Workers of the world, labour movements, socialised medicine, multi-culturalism, no guns in sight.....everything that yanks hate.

Instant-gratification culture, but you could link MTV into that, I'm convinced. But yeah, our generation wants everything for nothing and the instant technology we have perpetuates that.

It's a big generalisation though, but I reckon it's alot to do with class.

He's not, really. You have to be Indian to know his importance in this country. I'm passionate about sports, Spoony. I don't think sportsman are necessarily just that. A sportsman can give a nation belief as art can capture its soul.

Is Al Pacino just an actor? I don't think so. The guy is a genius for me.

I think people in these parts of the world do go over the top. However certain celebrities achievements go beyond merely sports and transcend boundaries.

I really enjoyed it, and even managed to tolerate the farcical and tediously dull nods to the Queen, and Beckham, let alone 'Macca'.

The Daily Mail has a hilariously spiteful article on the NHS references, and the fact they hated it also elevates my enjoyment.

Well, it's MTVs and hip hop's fault. It all stems back to when Yo! MTV Rap became the most popular show on the channel... Since then we've had gangster rap, till a few of them got killed, followed by its replacement... bling bling and materialism, and it sells and kids copy. I'd rather they go back to wannabe gangstas. Sadly it's got mass appeal.

Macca's hair wrangler should get a gold medal. He must be the best in the world. I'm still angry that NBC went to commercial during the Arctic Monkeys.

Arctic Monkeys were ace, and on a sadder note, i really liked Alex Turner's hair.

No, it's not about a man growing wings and becoming an other-wordly creature. It's about some individuals who through their brilliance command an unbelievable amount of respect in the eyes of millions. It's like that term "national treasure" that I hear the British use a lot.

Yeah but it's almost chicken and egg isn't it - MTV is the platform and they drove the direction Hip-Hop went in really. Thus fecking shit up for everyone.
