Venables may have to sell £10m Bowyer to Liverpool
By Alan Nixon
10 July 2002
Terry Venables' first act as the Leeds United manager may be to watch over the sale of Lee Bowyer. Venables flew in from Spain yesterday to take up his new role, with the future of Leeds' key players at the top of his agenda. His first task was a hastily arranged meeting with the club's coaches, Eddie Gray and Brian Kidd, and the chief scout, Ian Broomfield. He will meet the players today.

Gérard Houllier, Venables' counterpart at Liverpool, is closing in on a £10m deal for Bowyer, which should be concluded before the end of the week. Leeds need to bring in cash to help the fight to keep their England defender Rio Ferdinand.

Bowyer has made it plain that he will not sign a new deal, and with a year left on his contract Leeds are under pressure to accept a compromise figure. They were looking for £15m, while Liverpool's opening bid was around half that, but Anfield insiders believe the deal will be completed by Friday.

Bowyer's arrival would strengthen Liverpool's midfield, where a lack of goals has cost them dearly in the past.

If Bowyer's departure is swiftly followed by another expensive sale, it will be a major fillip in the battle for Ferdinand, with Manchester United waiting in the wings. The new manager's statement that he would like Ferdinand to remain at Elland Road, may force the defender to ask for a transfer if he wants to leave. Leeds would then probably be able to hold out for £35m.

Leeds fans were given hope that Ferdinand might stay when the club's chairman Peter Ridsdale said the defender's agent was "extremely complimentary" about the new manager.

Ridsdale met Pini Zahavi for the first time since the World Cup in London on Monday, and he said, "I don't think that Terry's appointment has tipped the balance because it was already in our favour; Rio is a Leeds United player who is not for sale.

"This was simply the first opportunity I have had to discuss Rio with his agent since the speculation began. I won't know Rio's views until I have spoken to him personally but his agent was extremely complimentary about Terry Venables and also said he understood that Rio would be impressed."

Ferdinand, who cost £18m from West Ham in 2000, is on holiday in Las Vegas and has said as long as the club wants to keep him, he is happy to stay.

I can't see the Rio Transfer happening and we will be left with Thuram because of all this messing about

In all fairness to United, if Ferdinand doesn't arrive it has nothing to do with 'messing about. We can't force a club to sell or a player to move, and if Leeds don't want to sell and Ferdinand doesn't want to move, then there's absolutely nothing we can do.

At the moment, it seems as so both the club and player are satisfied with the situation regarding each other. For the moment...

I hope they do sign him, as it would effectively end any chance they have of signing Duff.

The sale of Bowyer may not have the effect that at first it seems to have had, Leeds need to make a profit on sales in and out of the club, but by DOL's estimation they needed to add to the squad. The club could raise £20 - 25 m by selling Keane and Bowyer, but they would have to replace them both AND add to the squad, and to make a profit the replacements would be inferior, a backward step, IMO. The sale of a top player could change that situation, remember, the PLC are running this show, and not TV or PR.

Duff's valuation has been blown up due to four good games in the World Cup.
He is obviously a good player and has performed well for both club and country over the last couple of years but the £25 million quotes are ridiculous.
£15m seems about right, we might throw in Traore if they're lucky. :D

I've heared we'll offer money (around £15m) plus Djimi Troare (who Souness was chasing last season), Berger is likely to be sold to help fund the deal as well as a couple of the fringe players.

More confirmation of Bowyer deal.

I'd say you have a better player + cash option with some of your younger fringe players but Souness wants Disco to play with Cole again.

I think he's gonna stay tbh coz B'burn will price him out of the window.

I can't help but be wary about depending on Disco, will he do a PDC on us again?

WANKER!

I think alot will depend on whether or not he signs an extension to his contract.
If he doesn't, the board might get the jitters and decide to cash in for a reasonable fee.
Hope so anyway.

Anto: I actually think he'd go to B'burn due to Cole being there, he'd have that familiarity thing going on. If a deal is struck, I think Disco's valuation could be the problem; I think we value him at around £6m while Souness thinks it's nearer £3.5 - £4m.

I think £3.5 is about right.
;)

I'd say you'd be favs due to him being assured of the left wing spot, however, if Fergie can offer him a roaming role and convince him that he'd get plenty of playing time, we may be in with a shout.

I don't put much stock in who he supported as a kid, that all goes out the window once these guys start to earn the big bucks.

I hope so... I think he is ~4, max 5 as well. Anyway, don't think a 1-2m difference will rule us out.

In that case it would go down to which way Duff's mind is going and if it is going our way we will pay up. If it isn't, I wouldn't be surprised if we "lost interest due to Yorke/Duff valuation issues".

I would not be looking forward to Pool's counterattack with Duff, Diouf and Owen running at Blanc

Yep, that sounds about right.

I was surprised when I heard United were in for him as I've always thought Utd's main strength was in midfield. Maybe Fergie sees Duff playing in the role he had in mind for PDC.

Even though he didn't score in the WC, he caused havoc for everyone he faced and I see him being a big hit for poo this season, I hope he tanks mind, but, I doubt he will.

Who said anything about counterattack?

I actually spent a while before writing that wondering what these purchases mean. That is, what would be worse, Pool starting to consider playing classy free-flowing football or having such a deadly bunch of pacey dribblers for their current tactics. I think Blanc was the decisive factor there.

It will be counter attack. Otherwise you wouldn't hold on to Heskey. But then, no one has shown any interest...

Liverpoo have been fairly successful with their Wimbledon like long ball game. Teams will suss that out this season, and it'll be even funnier if they try and play football. Either way it's back to hoping for a top 6 spot for the poo

'course it is. . .i mean, it's not like we've strengthened the squad which finished 2nd last season or anything, is it. . ?

It's reported on Ceefax that while Rio think Venables is a good signing, he is 'getting impatient' to win trophies.

If that's not a shot across the Leeds bow, then what is?

Tel's trophy-winning record isn't great. I just hope Rio puts aside all this sentimental guff about the chirpy geezer Tel and his so-called tactical genius (untested at the highest level for 7 years - an age in modern footie) and has a long hard look at his record.

Leeds remind me of Chelsea - they flatter to deceive. They appoint the wrong people although they seem right at the time. Their ambitions are too great for their ability. Just hope Rio sees it.

that's the mitigating factor. . .he improves the squad in a position we need to strengthen, i.e. right midfield. . .but it'll take something a bit special from him to change my opinion of him.

:(

At least I'm in the correct forum for the club I support.

Liverpoo have got three decent players, none of whom did roxy at the WC, and a squad of hard working defensive minded dead beats - I got a fair idea who has and who hasnt got a clue around here and I dont need a mirror... ;)

I'm just hoping our new signings will improve us...

Then perhaps we could finish above you.

ok. . .i'm obviously intimidated by the improvements made to your squad this summer.

getting blanc to sign a new 1-year contract was quite a coup. . .
