I think it says a lot on Messi's side, when Cal, the biggest Ronaldo fanboy going, can only now pick faults at his penalty record.

Tbf you can't just "take away" a goal. He's a good penalty taker fair enough. He scores them with ease. A lot of which he wins with his trickery.

But I wouldn't base my judgement on a player on penalty taking ability.
 
How about this, let's not use penalties to prove anything about Ronaldo or Messi, as it's completely immaterial. FV, Cal, you are both major embarassments to mankind.

You are clearly trying to get Cal to respond to your bollocks about Ronaldo, and he obviously can't help himself as evidenced above, which will spark off another little spastic unwinnable war between yourselves.
 
I just CANNOT understand or begin to grasp how a MUFC supporter can be that in love with Ronaldo. Sure, he was 1 of our greatest individual players ever, he did a ton for us, he left us in a respected manner & he never utters anything but praise towards us...

BUT the fact remains - he LEFT United, not the other way around. Your loyalty should stop at wishing him well etc, but some peeps take it to the extent where you have question their priorities: CR7 > United > Football.

I just think it's a tad much tbh.

Alright alright, point taken, my reply was just to Marcos, i wasnt even aware of these stats.

juan mata's penalty last sunday agains birminghan was very good taken, and 90 percent of the penaltys taken that way are goal, would you say that the penalty was bad because the goalie stopped it?

I see what you're saying, there's a point where if the goalkeeper makes the save, you have to hold your hands up and admit he played a blinder making the save. But the player needs to make the save difficult. Place it in the top or bottom corner with speed, and 99.9% it's not getting saved. If it does, fair fecks to the keeper.

Someone made the point a while back, but in 2008 we played at the Emirates, and Ronaldo scored a penalty against Lehmann, lower left corner. The referee told him to take it again, and the bastard put it in the same place, Lehmann couldn't reach it. That's what I meant.

Again, if a Messi thread is only about praising him, perhaps it should say so in the title.

You should note that I didn't mention 'him' at all and kept it only to Messi's shoddy penalty record.

If FV gets all sensitive and deem every little critism of Messi as me trying to praise 'him', it's not my fault.

Just to be clear, I didn't mention who has a much better penalty record at all... :smirk:
 
It's not about praise Cal. What difference does it make if his penalty taking isn't at the highest standard? The limit of this discussion should go like this:

- Messi isn't that great at penalties?
- You know, perhaps he isn't. Someone else should take them if they are better.

That's it. It's such a throwaway point at this junction. It's like Wayne Rooney, he can't take the best pens, but what should we do, debate it till the end of days or just accept that he takes them for some reason, right or wrong, that is unknown to us. What makes this a bit more pointless is that Messi is the freak he is, nearly every aspect of his game is exceptional, so who even cares about his penalty record? Even if he missed 10 out of 20, what difference does it really make, and where do you go from here? He can't take penalties with the best of them, accepted.
 
Well don't be, no-one else is interested and as seen in the posts on this page, we don't want to turn this into that debate.

The difference is that if he's better at them, Barca wouldn't be 10pts behind.

I honestly didn't know he'd missed 6, i remember him missing against Espanyol a few seasons back. He's missed a few in the copa del ray by all accounts, when the ties were done and dusted.

It's when it really comes back to bite you that you take a look at penalty taking. If he misses a crucial one which results in a big lose IE a final, semi etc then i'm sure someone will address the situation and maybe he wont be number 1 penalty taker.

The idea of cals that he takes them purely to try and get a golden ball is a bit flawed. Considering he's been the number 1 penalty taker since before Guardiola arrived. He shared it with Eto'o before that.

i'm sure if he or Guardiola didnt have faith in him as a penalty taker they would address it but by and large he scores, he's missed a few but who hasnt.

I'm sorry if I don't find many things amazing about most saves off a dead ball from 12 yards. For as long as the taker does his job, you begin to understand the reason why its called a penalty.

You do have a good point though about those keepers who do pull off the unexpected. They are there.

At an amateur level, yes. When the keepers arent as good you really shouldnt be missing. The keepers have no knowledge of where you are going to go etc. Much harder for a keeper. I play at a decent level and didnt miss my first pen til last season, was gutted.

At a professional level with all the dvds, videos and the quality of keepers, its certainly more acceptable to miss a penalty. Certainly isnt shameful.

Honestly at professional level, the keeper should have even less of a chance of saving a dead ball from 12 yards than at amateur level. I feel that is the reason those misses get so much headlines. It can be argued that keepers pull off mini miracles, so Koroux has a huge point.
