Lionel Messi

that said, kaka i still do rate above rooney and ronaldo. For me, he is the one player i would pay zidane money for.

Messi just unfortunately doesn't have the strenght for the grind of engligh football.

That said, barca and real do deserve to be out of europe....they can't defend for the life of them.

I just knew they would be loads of 'Messi is God' threads after tonight.

All i got from the game tonight is that Real and Barca are god awful at defending and devoid of any shape or tactics what so ever. If i was a fan of either team i would be embarrassed by the laughable defending tonight.

Its ok saying it was a good game to watch with lots of goals but in reality half the players on the pitch were fecking useless, if you were a defender or central midfielder tonight they surely your manager must be thinking 'what the feck happened?'

Yeah Messi looked good but half the members on here could dance thu Madrids defense.

The spanish league is poor and thinking its because the forwards are so good that they make the opposition look bad is not a true reflection of the league imo.

Absolutely. That Torres was useless, and they didn't even double mark Messi on that side.

Messi's not on form every single game. you can't compare rooney's off days to Messi's performance today.

You make him sound like Robbie Savage.
Wayne Rooney for me was the best player in the Premiership last year. He still shows signs of class. As a 20 year old, it is ridiculous to be as good as he is now. Consistency will come with age. When he becomes consistent, people will realise again how brilliant he is.

I don't understand where this myth of Rooney's poor touch has come from. Even this season his touch has been fine.

Out of curiosity, how many times have you seen Messi play?

Dont forget that he´s been injured a lot last season and this season.

exactly. if he can stay injury-free and put performances like this every so often, THEN call him a legend or the greatest player.. this is the reason why i am uneasy about calling people like george best a legend. if he played longer and put in the same performances he did, then i would be fine with putting him up with maradona, pele, beckenbaur.

agreed, but on the flip side...from the grainy black and white match videos taht i have seen, and with what my dad has told me, team defending and defensive tactics were no where near as sophisticated or suffocating as today. Im not going to get into an argument over which era was better for football, each generation has their heroes.
I agree with you, football is also some sort of sience when it comes to tactics, it advances forward.

funny cause i used to think the same thing about ronaldo, put him in europe or spain and he'll bang goals.... but in the lille away match he strugled to get past his two markers, kept trying to overrun his marker which didn't work...

they've got diffrent styles of driblling, messi has got close control and ronaldo pushes the ball and uses his quick feet to take the ball a milli second before the defenders touches it...

No doubt Messi is brillant but how many times did he track back ?

Messi and Ronaldinho have the luxury of being farther up the field and rarely track back because Barca dont bother much about defending. They keep the ball brilliantly. Messi was isolated one on one against Torres for most of the time. Give Ronaldo the same luxury of being one on one with any defender (except maybe Cole) and he'll take him to the cleaners.

Messi wouldn't be that great if he played for us because he tracks back way lesser than Ronaldo and he cant cross the ball at all. Plus Messi is injured every year. He has missed 22 games so far this season.

Now I like Messi alot. But if you are going to compare him to Rooney or Ronaldo then at least put it in context.

If you have Messi in the United team, imagine each game when he is man marked or double marked, how would he cope then? It is easily forgotten that he just played against Madrid who's defence is embarassing at best. The amount of space and time he had was laughable.

Neither Rooney or Ronaldo get the time or space that Messi does, the defending in the Premiership is of a far higher quality then that of La Liga. Would Messi be able to cope with kind of tackles that Ronaldo gets each game? Would he be able to challenge against the opposition like Ronaldo does?

Also he has already shown in his short career that he can't handle injuries too well. Messi when he is on form looks brilliant, but that is also down to the team he plays with. With playmakers like Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Xavi and Deco then the kind of support he is going to get will play a major part in his performance.

You put Ronaldo or Rooney in that team tonight and I can assure you that you would of seen a similar or better performance. Ronaldo out there today would have been devestating. His pace and skill on the ball would have torn Madrid new holes.

Exactly. Rooney's first touch is right up there with the best. Sometimes he tries to do too much but who cares? When he gets it right it is brilliant.
Rooney's poor form this year has been incredibly over exaggerated. He will still be top 3 in the young player of the year awards.

well his touch hasn't been great... fact not myth.... he probably just needs a few weeks off...

great game tody, got to say barca and madrid have some woeful defences, laughable some of the defending and the amount of space and gaps in the game, giggs and ronaldo would have a field day

oh and kaka> ronaldo messi and rooney, though he is 2 or 3 years older than them

one great game???

who you kidding...

his last goal was in october because he's been injured since then...

im not kidding anyone. you cant call someone great if he's been injured so often and skips out on more than half a season. put a whole season under his belt, and we shall see. i am still not jumping on the "messi is the new maradona" bandwagon just yet. i still think our ronaldo is better than him.. i guess it's fair to say that even though messi has played so little, he has arguably done better than rooney, but thats only this season. i dont see that much of a difference in greatness between rooney and messi. they're both great players, a little different in terms of talent and attributes, but anyone who says messi is miles better than rooney is seriously retarded.. and vice-versa.

That is an excellent point. It would great to see how Messi could cope week in week out and how consistent he would be.

What's so uneasy about Best being called a legend? He got to the top of the football even with his relatively short career

who you kidding... messi skinned and tore torres and diarra in and out...

and ronaldo's style of dribbling is very unlike the other greats like maradona and zidane who had the ball glued to thier feet.... the spanish league might be able to cope better than messi...

people don't realise that la liga defenses are seriously shite. i'd like to see messi play against the likes of boro and bolton where he'd get lumps kicked outta him.

Kaka is my favorite player in world football (besides giggs who is my alltime favorite footballer)....and yes i agree kaka is better right now, but 2/3 years is a lot of time especially in one's early 20's. Rooney ronaldo messi kaka all play a different style as well, which makes it great for football in general. Everyone is happy, everyone will have their heroes depending on what qualities they like the best in their 'ideal' footballer. It will be very interesting to see who truely takes over the mantle from mainly zidane (but to some extent ronaldinho as well).

To all you guys that are saying Messi looked great because of bad Madrid defence.

Do you remember when Barcelona played against Chelsea in the 05/06 CL at stamford bridge?

He owned the Chelsea defence that night.

That's because Torres is shit and so was Diarra on the night.

Ronaldo for me is unique, he seperates himself from the other 'greats' and he will go on to be better then all of them.

I've said on here before that I don't think much of Messi, and that he'll never become one of the world's best players but after tonight, I'll have to take my hat off to Messi. What a fecking player, he'll surely become the world's best one day. Amazing performance.

Against Madrid even my grandma looks world class... He had a good game today but Ronaldo its been consistent all season... There is no doubt messi is quality but let see more of him

He got Horny sent off which helped for the rest of the game. Say that, he was playing brilliantly even before that point.

If Messi can perform like this week in week out then people can say 'he is better then Rooney and Ronaldo' etc. Till then there isn't much point comparing the players.

Absofeckinglutely , Arsenal cant score agains a shitty team like PSV , but scores a shitload agains Pool ......the same Pool who made Messie look invisible :D

The premiership is easily the most exiting league but if you want to judge a player on his footballing talents you can't look beyond than the spanish league..

most of the games here they hardly play fotball just lump the ball forwards...

and if you want to compare the players stop assuming who would play how in which league when there's the champions league...

how many goals has ronaldo scored in this competion...???.. i can't hear you...
