Happy to keep him. There's an outside chance he'll develop into a first teamer, but more likely he'll remain a useful squad player. He has a bit of quality going forward., works hard enough the other way and can play in a range of positions. Plus he's a United lad. You need people like him in the squad.

Well said. Everyone is pining for the good old days with Fergie in charge (I know I am!) and he always had room for limited but loyal squad players in his squad. Who often ended up playing a load of games, despite constantly getting it in the neck from fans. I'm all in favour of this continuing.

Can't really comment on the money. We've all seen transfer fees go through the roof. I'm sure wages are tracking them. 100k could well be the inflation-adjusted equivalent to what the likes of John O'Shea or Nicky Butt used to take home, back in the day.

It's not our money.

To all those who say he is only average, does that mean you sit in your chair motionless when he scores a vital goal or makes a vital assist ?

Sometimes I wonder who is on the end of these posts....
Yes he has scored some important goals, but apart from that what has he done other than running? Never influences a game, never provides that moment of magic. And we put him on a 100k/week contract? Did nothing in last two matches, his shooting is horrendous but hey, lets reward him for running all over the pitch.

If the rumors are true, we didn't bought Fabinho because we needed to sell someone before. I hope that it wasn't wage bill related.

I don't think we're in such a cash flow situation that we couldn't buy a player before we sell one.

Christ. Paying him 100k is madness, saying that we set the precedent by paying the likes of Young 115k, so lingard has a pretty strong position from which to negotiate when he's a first teamer...he'd argue he should be getting at least parity with the likes of Young and Jones. We shot ourselfs in the face early on by paying any and every player a stupid wage.

Maybe it's leaked so that when he actually signs a deal for 60k it will be better received. If this tweet had his wages at 60k even then everyone would have cried 'too much. Should be 40k'

I think the figure has been been released with the sole intention of getting a a sensationalised response out of people.

I am fine with this. He may not be the most talented, but he clearly is hungry for United to succeed.

Kendall Jenner's anti-capitalist protest was all in vain...

100k/week? we really like to piss money. At best he should be on 70k/week. Shameful we are paying so much to a mediocre player who would probably be at best a 10-15th team level player.

Hopefully this finally proves what is clear as day now. Despite what some resident experts here think of Jesse, the club, the board, Mourinho et al clearly value him and want to keep him here for a long time. 100k/wk is a fair wage for a player Manchester United are betting on staying here for an entire career.
But what do that useless lot know? :D

The only problem here would be if he we ever want to sell him in the future, or if some new manager comes and doesn't fancy him then getting rid of him is going to be difficult. But until then, if he's a Utd first squad player then its the kind of money he's going to get, seeing as how much others are earning. Giving this much money to nearly every player in the squad could may well come back to haunt us in the future, if (heaven forbid) our financial situation starts to wobble (though I sincerely hope that never happens).

This. Our continual persistence with bang average players is just beyond me.
Academy product, loves the club and is a positive presence in the dressing room, works hard, good technique. What's not to like? His finishing will improve I'm sure, especially once Jose adds more quality and properly replaces Rooney. I see him as our own Pedro.

Well if it was wage bill related then getting shot of BFS, Depay and Scnheiderlin solved that problem a while ago. I'm sure that whatever we were paying Jesse at the time didn't block any new signings and and this new contract (if/when it's signed) is unlikely to cause any problems in the future.

We paid the likes of Ashley Young, Depay, and Schneiderlin that much and paid the likes of Schweinsteiger and Rooney double that to sit on the bench. 100k is completely fair and probably a bit on the low end given how good he will become in the coming years.

To be fair, we are a PL club and he is an english player.

Sarcasm?

Lingard on 100k a week. He'd struggle to nail down a first team berth regularly for WBA or Stoke. The club needs a slap. I have no issue with him staying but that type of salary is why we're unable to offload squad players when they prove themselves to be not good enough in the long run.

Where do you think United's money comes from? Their money comes from season ticket sales and merchandise sales i.e. the fans, TV revenue which comes from TV companies charging for the product and who do they charge? Oh yes the fans. They get money from sponsorship and adidas for them to be the kit provider. Why do companies give United vast amounts of money? Is it because they like the look of their brand on a jersey or a billboard or is it because they have a readymade market to sell their products to the fans again. Quite simply no fans equals no money so if someone has bought a season ticket, jersey, a sky and BT subscription, a Chevy, some adidias merchandise and maybe even some noodles all of which directly and indirectly impacts on uniteds income then I think its reasonable to have an opinion on how the clubs income is spent as you have contributed to it. It just looks bad that people who may have to scrimp and save to follow their team then have to watch the club they love spend money like a drunken gambler with what seems little thought.

Didn't we agree to pay Luke Shaw 130k/week before he'd even kicked a ball for us?

I'm honestly intrigued how people judge this? Why should he be 70k a week and not 100k a week. What's the barometer? I said previously you can't compare him to other players in the world cos their wages don't matter.

Look at it like a business. United is a bigger business than most other football clubs and therefore can pay more money. There's construction businesses where people will be on more than a smaller company despite being worse at their job cos they can afford to pay the wages. That's just the way the world works and it's no different in football.

Lingard brings a lot to the table, he's local(ish), would be happy as a squad player, pops up with some useful goals every now and then and is proven in the premier league. It's not a huge risk really. Fooball has changed from the days of 50k a week being a massive contract. Average players in lower premier league teams can get that.

Possibly going on 3 out of 4 season without CL money coming in. Also, possibly about to go through the public shame of adidas decreasing our kit deal because we are a Europa League club. It's wobbling already.

How good do you expect him to become? He will be 25 this year and has managed 1 league goal

He's just another Cleverly

Yeah has any other journo been reporting this ? No one at MEN for instance?

We must be so freakin rich that we don't even know how to spend the money anymore...

Decent sqaud player, thus, he should get 70-80k MAX.!

Mail: 'Bling bling Lingard bought his mum Buckingham Palace'

Every team has average players. I don't get this assumption that we should only have an 18 man squad of world class players. No club in the world has ever had that.

Chelsea have players like Willian and Alonso starting. Arsenal have numerous average players as do City and Spurs.

Lingard would be a squad player at any of these clubs.
