Licha Martinez is the most important player in ETH-ball

It's a total myth. We've just been playing a less clinical version of Ole ball for the last two years. Ole ball is also a myth of course, what we actually do is just basic counter-attack, quick transition football which any team could do.

So the reason we're playing shit football with negative goal difference and finishing 8th is Licha being injured?

And if he's not injured we'll be finishing top 3 now?
Not the whole reason but big part of the reason. Two key players are Lisandro and Shaw not only in defense but also in build up, transition and attack. So to lose both for long periods had impact. Another big reason was that Bruno and Rashford's form fell of the cliff, Casemiro legs have gone like being cut by a lawnmower and also we didn't sign another quality forward. Add to that Sancho issues, Greenwood issues, rawness of Garnacho and Hojlund, absolute and total disaster of Antony, few Onana blunders, ETH inexperience at this level and you have quite a mix of circumstances attributing to our shit football. There were a few bright spots with revelation of Mainoo for example, a few wins over Poll and City and cup success. Let's see if ETH can build on that but with fully firing Lisandro, Shaw, a new elite midfielder engine, Rashford finding any semblance of form and another experienced forward to take on the striker workload, and maybe another half decent winger we could have a foundation of a solid team.

Take a good player out of a team that is short on quality and you will struggle, clear.

Missing both Shaw and Martinez was horrendous, thank Gawd Dalot stayed fit.

If you are still debating whether Martinez is important for this team, WHAT THE FECK IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Let‘s look forward and replace Varane, get another striker, dm and left back.

Dalot for me is by far your best most reliable defender. Varane hasn't aged well. He was an awesome CB in his prime.

The same way that Richard gets shortened to Dick, or James get shortened to Jim, or Pep gets shortened to Cnut.

Good posts.

You’d have to be a complete idiot to not recognise the importance of Shaw and Martinez to our play at both ends of the pitch though.

The thing with Martinez for me that we missed the most was his character. As much as his passing, tenacity and high pressing was missed I think his effect on the rest of the team was just as vital. There was definitely a more collective spirit when we defended well in his first season that was missing in the last.

I’m just hoping he can stay fit for the coming season and find a complimentary partner. The best teams generally have a settled central defence and hopefully a decent pivot in front of them.
