Let's talk strikers: who do we buy and why?

Isak would be the dream signing, but that is very unlikely so I would go for Guirassy from Dortmund. I know he has only been there for a season, but Dortmund are a selling club and we desperately need a striker like him. Similar to Isak, although not as good, but he has great technique, very good aerially, one of the best hold-up strikers in the world, and very good link-up player. He could be our Drogba.

Buying Isak would be very much the Liverpool approach of, buy the exact perfect player that does the thing your side sorely lacks a la Van Dijk.

We’re not getting Isak, he’d be perfect but he’d be too expensive and he’ll have better options if Newcastle don’t completely price him out of a move.

It is the more unproven options like Delap, Sesko and Aghehowa that are much more likely targets.

Surely we go for Gyökeres or Isak. Stop being stingy or try to be too clever and just buy a top quality player entering their peak years?

There is nothing clever about signing Isak for more than 100m and then not being able to fix the other holes in the squad. Newcastle wouldn't sell to us anyway.

Does anyone live in reality anymore I'm hearing the names touted on this thread like others ain't no top tier striker like Isak joining the 17th team in the league even if it is United, we are going to be shopping for a whole different profile as people like to say these days

Indeed, but Liverpool at that time had a great attack but couldn’t defend, so spent big on Van Dijk and Allison. I think we need more, although if all signings were to hit - not loads more. One centre forward, centre midfielder, and our insistence upon a peculiar formation has created glaring needs for a RWB and a L10. To be fair, we probably need a winger anyway. We have perfectly good right backs, but they have become somewhat obsolete so now we need to go and spend 40-50m on a RWB.

Why would Isak come here? Newcastle are in a far better position than us in so many ways. Even if he were available in the summer he'd have his pick of teams.

I really can't fathom the logic of people that think arguably the top striker in the league would choose us right now?

Jonathan David - cheap, scores 20+ every season and is his prime age. Then we can use our transfer budget on some of the many other positions that needs an upgrade...

Oh I know he’d never come.

But it’s more the point of when it comes to the striker position I do not know a single “big” club that was able to cheap out and have a top quality forward. Arsenal don’t have one, can’t win the league. City have Haaland, Liverpool have Salah (but can’t find a CF on the cheaper at the level of others), Lewandowski, Kane etc all cost a lot to get relative to what they were.

Sesko is the only one of those I look at and see a technical and physical level that I could see becoming world class. The others have the physical but not the rest and I’m not sure how much we can wait and hope to develop someone under our current circumstances.

More the point that I think CF we can’t keep going for potential or over the hill players. We’ve neglected the fact that goals win games for too long.

I agree they aren’t quite perfect comparisons it’s more the idea of sometimes it’s worth spending the money to just fix the damn problem rather than what we’ve done. Is £100m to know you’re getting 4/5 years of Isak at his peak worth it? I’d absolutely say yes.

We spent ~£70m on Højlund and ~£30m on Zirkzee I know which id rather.

Erm.. Liverpool paid less for Salah than we've paid for a bunch of players.

They're just much better at picking the right players

We are likely going to have to wait though as that is the situation we now find ourselves in. We don’t have 100m to spend on one player and no one at that level is going to be desperate to join us.

Your point is completely right though, we’ve spent 100m on Rasmus and Zirkzee, we could spend another 60m on Sesko and still need a striker. Liverpool bought a flop in Nunez but they have Salah to make that almost forgettable. Whereas Rasmus being a flop for us is a disaster.

I do think striker is the most difficult and expensive position to solve, if we somehow managed to get that right I think that would be transformative.

We really blew it when spending £108 million on Hojilund and Zirzkee. For them both to flop is an almighty blunder that now puts us in the real shit where our market is signings on a free or having to sell our better players to get some cash. Just think what a well run scouting department could do with £108 million to get you goals. The likes of Isak or Gykores are nothing more than a dream now.

He won’t be scoring 20 goals a season here though given it’s 1) a tougher league and 2) he won’t be on pens.

He’s scored 12 goals in the league this year which looks alright on paper, but if you break it down a little - 6 were pens and 3 of the 6 non-pen goals were a hat trick against second from bottom Le Havre in September.

I wouldn’t say no if he was coming in as a back-up alongside another signing, but he should not be a main striker target this summer.

I thought we should buy players 21-23 y.o. and they will peak in 2-3 years, and we'll be challenging.
