Legends: No1; Peter Schmeichel

Brilliant keeper - one of the best ever - but I do think we should all bear in mind he wasn't perfect.

We are too hard on our keepers, and have been for quite a while, because we are searching for the mythical Schmeichel, which is someone who literally never made any mistake. Such a person doesn't exist.

You're right.
But what we have to remember is that Big Pete produced when United needed him most. He may have his share of cock ups, but do you really think Schmikes would make mistakes like Carroll in the Milan game or Howard against Porto?

That game against Newcastle is probably one of the greatest goalkeeping performance I've ever seen.

Was that against Sturm Graz or was it against Legia Warsaw i can't remember
That´s againt Vienna? Am I right?

no one else managed to end his united career on such a perfectly orchestrated high note. what timing

I think he was the best. He was an outstanding presense. He was good from crosses, he was good saving one on ones. He was a good shot stopper, he had good reflexes.

He was perhaps the most intimidating goalkeeper. He kept the back four awake with his screaming

He wasn't the best at saving penalties though he saved some important ones for club and country.

I think we might have retained the european cup if he'd have stayed on the following year - but at the same time he did make a lot of mistakes near the end. I especially remember the cock up in munich when we were winning 1-2.

A definate United legend however and another of Fergies Bargain buys
