Bought by United from Danish side Brondby for a mere £500,000 the 6ft 4 stopper went on to become the best goalkeeper in the history of Manchester United and arguably the best goalkeeper of all time.

He kept 178 clean sheets in 392 games and even scored twice, although one, a belting scissors kick was incorrectly given offside! His long throw was legendary, starting many a successful counter attack.

His trophy list at United included

The Treble
1999 European Champions League
1999 F.A. Premier League
1999 F.A. Cup

1997 F.A. Premier League

The Double
1996 F.A. Cup
1996 F.A. Premier League

The Double
1994 F.A. Cup
1994 F.A. Premier League

1993 F.A. Premier League

1992 League Cup

He won over 100 caps for his native Denmark, scored once and won the European championships with some magnificent goalkeeping. I have personally never seen a goalkeeper as good. Lets hear it for the big man!

Definately one of the all time great goalies.

A football god, probably the best goalkeeper that ever lived.

Brilliant keeper - one of the best ever - but I do think we should all bear in mind he wasn't perfect.

We are too hard on our keepers, and have been for quite a while, because we are searching for the mythical Schmeichel, which is someone who literally never made any mistake. Such a person doesn't exist.

agree best we've had for a long time but far from perfect
Remember the mid season break for him after he made a lot of cockups so Fergie sent him off fer a week or two in the Caribean.on holiday. I think

what can i say about a living legend

i remember one of the saves he made. kinda flapped at the ball in mid air, legs and arms stretched in different directions, looking like a cat. hard to explain but hopefully someone knows what im going on about....

yea i think it was against everton, he went to punch the ball, got part of it then ran out to the top of the box and did that massive jump save

All keepers since are compared to Schmeichel, but how do you find the a replacement for the greatest of all time? Perfection is something we all dream of, but no one is perfect. Schmeichel though was as close to perfect in terms of goalkeeping as you'll ever find.

Well one thing is for sure, he is by far the best keeper to ever grace the Permiership. No one can really argue with that. Seaman was a v good player but not on the same level as Schmikes.

This is one of the best threads in a long while. It's good to see something like this rather than constant talk about Glazer and people getting flamed for even daring to criticise Ferguson  He is god, everything he does is right

Anyway... good thread.

Definitely the greatest goalkeeper I've ever seen play. A true legend. unfortunatley his attitude towards winning made him celebrate too enthusiastically when he was playing for that other lot and they got a result. Not the sort of thing Cantona giggs or Keane would have done but then I dont think Schmikes ever had the club as close to his heart as those 3. But without doubt a legend.

ps Keane was Fergies best ever signing.
