Need a new laptop so looking at one for Christmas. My computer knowledge is limited so could do with a bit of help....

This one is down from £949.99 to £549.99 & it's probably the favourite.

HP Pavilion dv6-6176sa 15.6" Laptop - Steel Grey buy online | Currys

However, this one seems better to me?? But why would it be so much cheaper?

HP Pavilion dv6-6b50sa 15.6

Also liking the Vaio's but they seem overpriced for what you get, but then I'm not really sure..

SONY Vaio VPCEH2P0E/B.CEK 15.5" Laptop buy online | Currys

Mainly use it for uni work, internet, storing and playing music off (usually through external speakers/headphones), storing lots of pics, and maybe a bit of Footy Manager but probably not....
As you can see, could do with a bit of enlightening!

What do you want to use it for? And where? At home and the office or on the move too?

Sorry, realised I missed this out, just edited. Mainly at home. Also to add, will most likely use it for Autocad too.

Though I have a similar Vaio model, I would vouch for a HP pavillion with a i5 processor.

The reason the first one (6176) is priced higher than the second might just be due to the processor.

Would that make it worth the extra pennies?

Just looked at a HP with i5 processor and its just out of my price range :(

If you want a future-proof one, I'd choose this one (even if its slightly pricy, a lot better)

DELL Inspiron Q15R Switch 15.6" Laptop - Black buy online | Currys

a slightly cheaper version:

SAMSUNG Series 3 NP300E5A-A03DX 15.6" Laptop - Silver buy online | Currys

I'd choose these.

I see what you're saying but I'm a ponce and looks matter to me as well. I also like the Apple type keyboards on the others (think this might be called 'Island' but could be mistaken). Also, would the LED HD screen on the HP's look any better for everyday use?

These are all still two rectangles joined together by two hinges. What matters is the weight, the capabilities, the batteries and the prize. Also I wouldnt by any laptop without a matte screen. I dont want to watch my own ugly face.

My next "laptop" will be a Transformer Prime with the laptop dock. I only need it for browsing, writing, making presentations, music, films and occasional simple photo/video editing.

Macbook Air as a desktop replacement:)

Where the feck does the OP mention "desktop replacement".

Needlessly? The are just "better".

No they are not. They are 'better' for certain type of people who never want to pop the hood of their cars ever.

It's a nice computing experience, but people working with a budget should never be recommended macs. You pay too much extra for the apple logo.

They are absolutely better. My 4 previous PC laptops would take forever to load and have its internet and various other programmes go (Not Responding) annoyingly regularly. My Mac boots in about 20 seconds, has frozen just twice in the 15 months I've had it, runs like a dream - faster and smoother than any PC laptop, in terms of internet, downloading, gaming (though I'm not a big gamer) and any program you can name really. It's simply a superior product than the average PC, no two ways about it.

We've been over this before.

You bought shit laptops, feeky. Don't compare shit laptops to macs. Compare them to good ones.

You basically don't know what you're talking about because you never had the nous to buy a good laptop.

Which does make you prime customer for buying a mac.

Try a modern Win7 laptop, you'll be suprised.

I have Win7 on two desktop computers (and linux on the laptop), i didnt have any of them frozen once for years.

I bought laptops with high ratings from CNET. They all eventually had the same problems. My old man has a Win7 laptop that was about three-quarters the price of my Mac and it drives him insane. Perhaps there is a PC laptop out there that runs as well, as fast and as long as a Mac without being a lot bulkier, I haven't found it yet though.

Your problems start there.

As I've said elsewhere before my Windows-based Samsung (which cost significantly less than any Mac) does this. The new Samsung 9-series with SSD-harddrives boots much faster.

Mac is fine if you've got enough money and just need a computer, or if you need it for something specific. If you just want a computer for "browsing and stuff" and you're on a limited budget it's absolutely mental to buy a Mac. Windows will continue to run fine if you aren't stupid. My desktop hasn't been formatted for at least 3 years and it haven't frozen for at least a year. My laptop has only frozen once during the year I've had it.

Then comes the compatibility issues you get with Mac. It's just not a "superior product" as you say it is.

Edit: Out of curiosity: What Windows-based laptops did you own before?

Nonsense, because that doesn't apply to me as I'm an IT pro. Vista was enough for me to feck windows off for life, being forced to go back to XP to get my computer to do anything was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I've used many a high spec windows laptop and I just find a Macbook Pro much much better. It has feck all to do with it "looking good" etc, it's just better.

Macbooks are good quality, but overpriced products, they are also uniformized "one size fits all" kind of things.

Certainly a bit overpriced, but then it depends on what you compare it to. You have to spend a fair bit of cash to get a windows laptop then can stand up to it.

Obviously once you find that windows laptop that can it's a taste thing with the OS, and personally I prefer OSX.

How do you know that?

He's considering spending 550 quid ish on a windows lappy.

a 11inch Macbook Air is 849 quid with 64gb ssd, thats crazy. And the cheapest pro is twice as more as the computers he's eyeing. This are with small displays, which makes them unusable as a desktop replacement.

The cheapest Macbook that could be considered as a desktop replacement laptop is 1549 quid.

Why do you keep mentioning "desktop replacement", he said I will use it mostly at home? If I wanted a "desktop replacement" I''d be buying an external screen, rather than carrying a fecking 17inch laptop around campus

Anyway, we're going off subject aren't we, it's turning into a mac haters haven :)
