Lady Ga Ga mystery!

MTV-VMAs-Show-Lady-Gaga3.jpg

The look on Slim's face (and much of middle America I would presume) makes her worthwhile in my book!

When Eminem thinks you are fecked up, you need to go and look at yourself, then go jump off the nearest bridge

Okay first things first...apologies to Mockney for flying off the handle

There's no need to ever apologies to me....I just like a good rant every now and then (more often now than then tbh)

In an unrelated matter....is Eminem very small?...It would explain his anger issues

Eminem looks like an old housemate of mine, who was a mentalist and threatened me with a knife.

Can't possibly imagine why he might have done that CD

I just watched her video, albeit without the sound (largely on the basis that I've heard her prior musical 'efforts') and... just looks a load of nonsense to me

I don't think she has that interesting a style either. Dressing up ridiculously to get yourself talked about... enough people have already done that. Also someone who has to resort to pretending she has a penis to get press attention...

Not for me thanks

Her music is the worst kind of generic, over-produced pop, which could be sung by any one of dozens of performers and sound exactly the same, whilst also being instantly forgettable.

That said, she's an interesting character and seems to have a genuinely original sense of style. And yes, I'd hit it, cock or no cock.

I note that you decided not to bold my last sentence.

I obviously have lower standards than you ;)

No I'm with you there bro, I'd hit it cock or no cock!

Not sure how tall he is but this link Tabloid Whore: EMINEM'S EX WIFE KIM SAYS THE RAPPER NEEDS VIAGRA. might be a clue to his 'size-related' anger management problems:
Eminem's ex-wife Kim Mathers was a guest on Detroit's "Mojo in the Morning" radio show today where she proved she is still a smidgen bitter about the break-up with her ex. In the interview, Kim stated:"I can't stand him. He's an absolutely horrible person, and he gets worse every day."Kim also added that sex with Eminem was "bad" and that he had a small penis.

See! you got me googling pop celebrities now, improving my scope of cultural awareness all the time!:)

Great visual artist my hole. I watched the first minute while listening to something else so im not making any judgement on the song. The video on the other hand is completely contrived, rips off a lot of Sci-Fi films and the director probably thought he was being awfully clever with the whole Bau Haus - Bath Haus connection. feck away off.

What Sci-Fi films specifically?

Bah I don't actually think it's influences are particularly great in number or diverse. It's basically Fifth Element spliced with the last scene of 2001, throw in Max from Where the wild things are and shot by the Sunday Times Style magazine photographer. Hell the 'bullet time' effect was old hat when the wachowski's first used it. In my grumpy opinion.

bet it was very expensive though.

I'm not for or against GaGa, I just don't understand the high level of disdain bordering on hatred toward her, she's trying to be original and do something different. I watched all those Sci-fi movies and I don't see the connections, and I usually watch for that sort of thing, but that doesn't matter, Artists (and I'm referring to the director) borrow from other artists all the time, its called "paying homage to", its not an unusual practice and it doesn't diminish the quality of the end product... borrowed or not

Theres being original and “borrowing” from other people as you’ve said and managing to do something new with it. Theres also borrowing from other people and using these influences in a really lazy, contrived way. Which is what I saw here. The video is just a jumble of ideas, mostly taken from others. The Bath Haus – Bauhaus thing is particularly annoying, its those sort of jokes people make and then think they’re incredibly clever. When its actually quite lame. To me Lady Gaga just seems like a hyperactive art student. Theres plenty like her and who can do what she does. Lots of people do it though, borrowing from other artists, The Last Shadow Puppets are a perfect example used earlier in the thread. Nothing remotely original about them, and personally I hate their music. Its 60’s by numbers.

If you want something truly original, in terms of music and visuals, check out an artsist called Caribou. He released album called the milk of human kindness and also a dvd of animation to accompany the music. Awesome dvd, great music and great visuals. Was watching it last night, I’d actually forgot how good it is.

I'd agree with all your criticism of Lady Gaga but The Shadow Puppets are quite different, that's just a light-hearted take on 60s pop that doesn't take itself too seriously.

.

Warning You're going to have Pogue and Mockney on your case pretty soon..they were extolling the virtues of the Shads in this thread!

I can see the appeal. Im just not a fan. I was just using them as an example. Another one is Duffy and the wave of “soul” singers that followed her. Just copying 60’s pop. But then commercial music is never that original, its generally a retread of something that was successful before, just repackaged and sung by someone else. I suppose me saying all this is like complaining how Michael Bay films lack character and are just a rip off of previous blockbusters. Its done for mass consumption, not to please some arsey irish fella who has his own opinions regarding what is borrowing influences and what is ripping people off.

To be fair I cant think of a truly original artist since David Bowie...and that's bloody 40 years ago!

Yeah but that's a homage to the second-rate camp aesthetics of the catwalk.

I just took a listen to a few tracks from Milk of Human Kindness, and I must say I do like, so thanks for bringing them to my attention, I would have to say though from an initial listen it sounds to me like they've borrowed from Sigur Ros, and thats not a criticism as Sigur are a top top band.

Explain what you mean by the Bauhaus joke, I'm not getting that at all?

Yeah but that's a homage to the second-rate camp aesthetics of the catwalk.

As I said I'm not for or against her, but I do get the feeling that she is genuine in her attitude and approach, to me thats more important than anything, whether it comes across as campish or subpar doesn't matter, if she's doing it for the right reasons then how can she be criticized, I think people get too tied up in aesthetics and references, every artist I've ever met has talked up their influences more than anything. A perfect illustration of this mix up is Koons.

PS, I had a good chin wag with Jeremy Deller 3 weeks ago, he has an instillation at MCA at the moment, it involves 2 live subjects one is a marine who served in Iraq and the other is an Iraqi who you can engage face to face, its been very popular.

Theres definitely some Four Tet in there aswell. But its folky, which I think helps it stand out from other ambient, electronic music. Definitely worth checking out.
The Bauhaus thing is at the start of the video it says The Bath Haus of Gaga. It then shows a very clean, sterile room with big white coffins on the floor. That set, and the rest of the sets aswell are all very minimalist and functional. Bauhaus is a german art school from around the time of WW2 (?), the main thing about bauhaus was all about form and functionality. Everything was very efficient and sleek. Its interesting, it came out of the first world war and influenced a lot of art and architecture since then. The joke just seems kinda cheap. Might be just me haha.

I know what Bauhas is, I live in a Mies! I missed the reference as I've only watched it once and didn't catch it thats all.

edit, I think you meant WWI

Sorry, didn't mean to seem like i was talking down to you. After i posted that any i noticed your other post regarding the installation. Sounds quite cool that. Went to an exhibition last week that was actually a pile of balls. Walked in just as a talk was starting, had to stand for 40mins listening to the two artists chatting about their other work before i got to see the installation. It was a charred fence basically. Diasppointing, the rest of their pieces they were talking about were huge big sculptures and shacks they built themselves. Arses wasted perfectly good drinking time.

No offence taken, I was just leading you so I could say "I know what Bauhaus is, I live in a Mies" How often does one get to say a statement like that.....:lol:

I admire Dellar's politics but not his practice I'm afraid (but what's he got to do with this?).

'The bauhaus is our house', you could have said.

Her new video with Beyonce is pretty damn good...

Edit: She actually looks normal in this video...and quite fit as well.

You think so? I think she looks masculine.

Anyways, she is not a girl, she is not a boy. She is Lady GaGa, new term for Hermaphrodite. Even google auto-completes your serch when you write Hermaphrodite with "Hermaphrodite Lady Gaga"
