L.A. Noire

There was nothing to it. Could have been a lot better. The actual parts where you do anything are over in seconds.

Rockstar's best ever game I've played is Red Dead Redemption.

I've pretty much loved everything they've done. GTA has always been one of my all time favorite games. Red Dead Redemption was outstanding and possibly the best ending to a video game ever. Max Payne 3, which I just finished, is easily one of the best I've played in the last few years. L.A Noire is the only one I'd put in the "good" to "very good" category.

I'd put it a close second behind GTA3.

Red Dead probably has one of, if not my out-right favourite, ending to any Video Game i've ever played... I don't really get why some folk hated it.

Red Dead was good, the GTA series are on the whole a lot better though, for me. And LA Noire was a major disappointment. I wondered deep down if I might return to it but there is just no way it will happen now. I stopped to play Uncharted 2 and the gulf in quality and in-game enjoyment is mind boggling.

Quality? LA Noire has tons of quality. It looks and sound amazing.

But yes Uncharted 2 is a far more enjoyable game

LA Noire is an exceptionally well made game... it just really let's itself down on the gameplay reptition, storyline and some of the facial acting.

If they ironed out the kinks for a sequel, and innovated some new things, they could have a truly great game on their hands.

Didn't help that the main protagonist was a passive-aggressive, wife-cheating, annoying cnut either...

I'm in the process of acquiring Max Payne 3 ;) and I've heard only good things about that game, I'll have my verdict after I finish it hopefully.

Have you played the first two? They were iconic games at the time.

And I think this one is brilliant as well. Surprised it hasn't gotten more attention. The action is the best I've played in recent times. For me, it was better than Uncharted 3.

Is Max Payne 3 a lot better than the original?

A long time ago now, but with Max Payne on my PS2, I remember it being good but there being too many story sequences - and them being too long. Tho to be fair they did make handy skinning up breaks.

They're fairly different games I would say... but there's just as much long story sequences in Max Payne 3 then there were in the original Max Payne games.

TBH things have changed since then, I think I am more used to them. I played Mafia II for example, that has very long story sequences and it didnt bother me. I think with MP I just wasnt used to it - it was one of the first games I played that used them to that extent.

I really liked it, but better than Uncharted 3?

Not quite for me anyway

It's not better then Uncharted 3 I would say... it's good, but it's certainly with problems.

Uncharted 3 however is an insanely polished, well rounded game.

It's been ages. Don't remember how they were in comparison but I loved the first 2.

Bold. You have piqued my interest with that comment.

I don't think it's a very bold comment. While it was certainly enjoyable, Uncharted 3 is a very overrated game IMO. Skyrim was in different league for me personally, not to mention the likes of Deus Ex (huge fan of that series) that offer so many more parameters.

I prefer Max Payne to Uncharted, with respect to latest editions as well as the two series' as a whole. I prefer Payne's gritty outlook conveyed through consistent introspection as a theme as well it's action which requires a lot more skill.

Polished, yes. Deep, not very.

It was more of a joyride rather than something super engaging and deep. I can't for a moment compare it to Skyrim or Deus Ex which really get you involved into their world.

That's a fair comment... though I think the world of Max Payne 3 was nowhere near as immersive or interesting then the world of Max Payne 1 or 2.

I think my main problem with MP3 was the shoot-dodging. Which, for me, didn't stay true to the originals... as it wasn't anywhere near as effective as your run-of-the-mill cover shooting, which was disappointing, as MP should be about throwing yourself around the room.

OK well its a bold comment for me because Uncharted blew me away. Actually, 2 more than 3 - I think just because I played them consecutively and 2 had more novelty value. I havent played the others you mentioned.

I do vaguely remember the original being quite hard though, which you cant really say about Uncharted, the latter two were both completed in little more than a week each.

Being a bit easy is a bit of a recurring criticism with a lot of the games being mentioned here. Red Dead Redemption especially, the fighting sequences were way too simple. But I guess there is a balance to strike - it is quite annoying when you get stuck on one particular bit and cant get past it for weeks on end.

For me Vice City and San Andreas struck a better balance than most in that respect. They took me much longer to complete and were out before I had kids, so I used to play them much more.

I did like the comic book style of the first 2 more than the 3rd. But I think they got a beat down, consistently drunk guy's story just right. It was actually a bit refreshing to see the hero being as far away from being a hero as you can possibly imagine. And to be honest, they were never going to match the wife angle of the first. That was one of those iconic moments in gaming. A bit like the original Dues Ex and the twist regarding NSF.

I read a lot about the issues with shoot-dodge but I actually thoroughly enjoyed the action. They could have made it more effective I guess but I reckon they felt that "shoot dodge" in general as a "move" is slightly unrealistic when it comes to taking out a room full of guys. And I think that makes sense. A guy diving across the room taking 5 guys out is a bit of stretch especially if you're able to use it consistently. And I have to say I enjoyed using the combination of bullet time + cover combo in addition to the occasional bullet time + dodge combo to finish a smaller number off.
