United try for Greek starlet
Reports claim Sir Alex bidding for 16-year-old

Reports in Greece claim Manchester United have firmed up their interest in Olympiakos starlet Kryiakos Papadopoulos.

The centre-half is considered one of the best defensive prospects in European football.

Still only 16, Papadopoulos is already part of the first-team squad at the Karaiskakis Stadium and became the youngest player in Greek League history last season.

United have been keeping checks on Papadopoulos since he made his debut and they were one of a number of clubs to enquire about him over the summer.

Now it is claimed by leading Greek sports paper Fos ton Spor that both United and Newcastle have made firm offers to the Athens side.

It states that both Premier League clubs have confirmed they would be willing to pay €4million (£3.1million).

It remains to be seen whether Olympiakos would be willing to talk, as Papadopoulos only recently signed a new long-term contract with a get-out clause of €6million (£4.6million) and that is likely to be the fee they demand for the youngster.

The lad is built like a tank BUT unless he is "that" special he will face a tough competition from our own academy groomed youngsters. At the moment the academy just seems to be specialising in churning out defenders

Greek starlet keen on United
Papadopoulos would have no qualms in leaving homeland

Greek starlet Kyriakos Papadopoulos admits he would be 'proud' to play for Manchester United, but is trying not to be distracted by transfer speculation.

Reports have claimed that United are lining up a bid to sign the 16-year-old, who currently plays for Olympiakos, in the January transfer window.

The highly-rated centre-half is unaware of any interest from United, but would be honoured to join the Premier League and European champions.

"It's an honour for me to hear that Manchester United show interest," Papadopoulos told the Greek media.

"Personally, I don't know anything official yet. I just hear the rumours. I am an Olympiakos player and I am focused on Olympiakos right now.

"I will keep working and, if anything is going to happen in the future, I will be very proud if it's going to be for Manchester United."

Not nervous

The 16-year-old also insists he is not overawed by the interest and says he would have no problems in leaving his homeland at such a young age.

He added: "The fact that many European clubs have watched me in the last months doesn't make me nervous. It's a pleasure.

"Is it going to be hard to leave Greece at the age of 16? Not at all.

"If a player really wants to play football out of his country, and the situation at his new club is good, I don't see a reason not to try."

Papadopoulos plays down rumours
Greek defender claims to be unaware of Man Utd interest

Kyriakos Papadopoulos is flattered to hear of reports linking him with a move to Manchester United, but says he feels settled at Schalke.

Speculation has suggested that the Greece international could emerge as a possible transfer target for Sir Alex Ferguson this summer.

At just 20 years of age, Papadopoulos is considered to be a hot prospect for the future.

He has already turned out for Olympiakos and Schalke, in both domestic and continental competition, and is currently away on Euro 2012 duty with his country.

Papadopoulos is delighted to learn that he is considered good enough to turn out for a club of the size and stature of United, but admits there is no substance to the rumours as far as he is aware.

"I don't know if there is any interest from Manchester United," he told Sky Sports.

"It's an honour for me to hear that such a big club likes my football, but at the moment I don't know anything about it.

"Of course I would like to someday play for Manchester United, but I am a player of Schalke and I am focused on them."

Papadopoulos is keen to put club discussions to one side for now, with his focus locked on Euro 2012.

Greece have taken just one point from their opening two fixtures, but could still make the knockout stage.

"I am very happy to be a member of the national team at such a big competition, at my age," added Papadopoulos.

"I have played a lot of games in European competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League with Schalke, but the feeling here is unique.

"I hope to beat Russia and play in the next round."

I haven't heard anything of us being linked to him recently...
