Kobe Bryant announces retirement

Bringing up Oscar just makes LeBron look even more supreme btw. Oscar did that in a time when it was easier to do so.....like most sports, the NBA is more physical and tactically aware nowadays.

horseshit!

jabbar , bird , magic , jordan and robertson. got my five. mr robertson averaged a triple double one season. it wasn't easier or more would have done it. oh and by the way he played defence too.

Wilt had Hall of Fame teammates like Hal Greer, Sam Cunningham, Guy Rodgers, Nate Thurmond, Paul Arizin, Gail Goodrich, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor at points in his career. And Wilt definitely had the better team around him in 1969. While over their careers Russell probably had the better teammates the deck was not as stacked as it seemed.

Hal Greer - played with Wilt for his age 29, 30 and 31 seasons
Billy? Cunningham - played with Wilt for his first 3 seasons
Paul Arizin - played his last 3 seasons during Wilt's first 3 seasons
Gail Goodrich - played with Wilt for Wilt's last 3 seasons
Jerry West - played with Wilt for Wilt's last 4 seasons, when West was in his 30's
Elgin Baylor - played just one full season with Wilt, when they were both in their 30's

Meanwhile...

Bob Cousy - played with Russell for 7 seasons
Tommy Heinsohn - played with Russell his entire career
Frank Ramsey - played with Russell his entire career
Bill Sharman - played with Russell for 5 seasons
Sam Jones - played with Russell his entire career
KC Jones - played with Russell his entire career
John Havlicek - played with Russell for 7 seasons

The deck was as stacked as it seemed.

Alright you keep downplaying some of the great of the game....

OMG finally! Should've retired ages ago....hopefully the Lakers dust off and move on....and pronto!

So how good was this guy compared to Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan? I'm not an NBA-watcher by the way, I just know those 3 names lol.

Jordan > Johnson > Chamberlain >> Kobe.

But it's very close, I think those 3 are in the top 5 ever along with Kareem Abdul Jabbar & LeBron James. And Kobe for me is just outside that bracket.

If Kobe & Shaq stayed together longer then he'd be in the top 5. Plus other factors like the rape case, Odom leaving, and of course his injuries while he was still in his prime.

He's my personal favourite player though.

Is Lebron James generally rated higher than Kobe?

Absolutely.

I'd say he's top 3 with Kareem Abdul Jabbar as 3 players who were the best players of their individual eras.

His statistics are ridiculous, averaging 30+ points a game season after season, assists, blocks etc.
Last season in the finals he averaged 57+ points that he either scored or assisted on in every single game.
The main reason he lost was due to his teammates being out injured, but his performance was probably one of the best in NBA final history.

Thanks, for some reason I thought Kobe was generally rated more than Lebron.

Kobe at his best was better IMO. A more unstoppable player and a better defender, in addition to having won it 5 times.

Lebron is less unselfish though, and looks a nicer guy.

I think you mean less selfish ? :D

The old ring debate.....urgh. When LeBron had teams as stacked as Lakers stacked theres, he went to the finals 5 years in a row and probably 6 this year. He also pretty much took the Cavs there in his first run, yes a 2-4 record looks bad, but his performances from the past 4 were superior to any of Kobe finals performances. He just lost to a GOAT dynasty for a second time and well pretty much a GOAT team. On the flip side, I'd probably also have his other finals performances quite low as the star player, so it's not all pro-LeBron here, he had a massive tendency to throw in the towel earlier on, the Mavs loss really changed him.

I'm not sure which era Spurs I'd consider better. Celtics were the better team in 2010 or whatever too, a finals the refs truly did ruin.
