2 man midfield
Last Man Standing finalist 2021/22
Man Utd might not thank me, but get the contract out…
To some extent yes, but it has to be remembered that he's still 3 or 4 years off the age where most midfielders start really becoming consistent. At his age he's expected to be inconsistent, so the important thing to look for is whether the potential is there and that he is improving as time goes on (with some ups and downs along the way of course).Love Mainoo but lets put things in perspective. Like many of our players he is able to produce world class moments.
Whether he can produce 8/10 performances for 90 mins consistently throughout the season is the crux of the matter.

Hence why he shouldn’t be asking for obscene wages. Is it really fair to expect that from him at his age - especially when even the seasoned players around him aren’t managing it themselves?

There's not a midfielder on the planet who can produce 8/10 performances for 90 minutes consistently throughout the season. Literally not a single one. And it would be the height of foolishness to base such a decision just on what he gives you right now. He's what, 20? What you think about is what he's going to be a few years down the road.Love Mainoo but lets put things in perspective. Like many of our players he is able to produce world class moments.

Sure, and I understand that, but he also needs to understand that he’s been good for a season. The fact that we overpaid for mediocre players isn’t a factor. They are working on that now. He’s asking for almost the same as Bruno. It’s insane. He’s not currently close to that level. 60-80.000 plus bonuses. And this perfectly sums up the issue the club faces - and why a serious culture reset is so badly needed. At just 18, Mainoo was arguably one of our most consistent performers last season. You can’t blame him for looking around the dressing room and thinking, "If X, Y, and Z are earning that kind of money, why shouldn’t I?"
It’s the result of years of mismanagement and poor wage structure, but to be fair, it does seem like steps are finally being taken to fix it.

In this case, wouldn't it make a lot of sense to take the Chelsea approach? Ie, long contract, heavily incentivised?
Literally no player, other than defenders and Goalkeepers, can do what you are implying, putting in 8/10 performances consistently throughout the entire season. What the top players do however is find a way to dominate the opposition as a team, and in the crucial moments, impose themselves in the game and make a difference with their abilities, which Kobbie has shown being able to do even in his fledgling career. He has that composure, that special factor to make a difference, which is what separates the truly great ones from the very good players. For e.g. the likes of Rashford/Garnacho might do a occasional worldie, but they lack true technical ability to do that in a consistent manner unlike the likes of Amad/Kobbie.Love Mainoo but lets put things in perspective. Didn't we give Amad 120K for only half a season of quality play? So it's not like we've made negotiations easy when we signed him to that extensionSure, and I understand that, but he also needs to understand that he’s been good for a season. Amad’s contract was out this summer so he had a stronger hand and before his injury he was arguably also our most important player ahead of Bruno (mainly as he was unusually off form around the time).Didn't we give Amad 120K for only half a season of quality play? So it's not like we've made negotiations easy when we signed him to that extension
We all want Mainoo to become a legend here. He has nice traits, and he is a fan of the club.
What some people are missing is that people don't want to get rid of Mainoo because he is not good enough, but rather because they don't want to spoil him by giving him a huge contract which almost certainly will make him an arrogant deadwood in less than 5 years.
He is young but there are some questions regarding his injury record, in general his fitness issues.
Let's be honest, a player with good 6 months in his career asking for 180k is a huge red flag. He has not proved anything and he already wants to be paid among the best in the world.
It's not entirely his fault: that's how we are operating for over a decade. But if we want to move forward, some things must change, and if this leads to us selling a talent like him, so be it.
Pleased with his well taken goal yesterday.
Entirely agree. He had a difficult start to the season, form wise, which is unsurprising given the summer he had. So many people jumped on the “get rid” bandwagon, using the contract “demands” as an excuse. That narrative was already building because of a brief spell of poor form, in a player who is just 19. Generally the takes on young players here are extremely volatile and devoid of any understanding of player development. No one really knows what is going on in negotiations. Most that talk of selling him are eager to sell him and Garnacho to raise funds for other signings. If it was genuinely a case of concern that he wants too much money then the responses would be more that we should negotiate hard with him and ensure he doesn't get obscene money but instead there are a number of people that jumped pretty swiftly into the "just get rid then" talk.
We should be keeping Mainoo and Garnacho and developing them as best we can. We have given them far too much responsibility at their young ages and need to surround them with top quality players and experienced pros. They should be bonuses not the main prize currently.
We need to pick one position for him and play him there otherwise he’ll be a jack of all trades, master of none.Like many players, Mainoo can play in more than one position. He will be able to play as a central midfielder in the number 8 position or as an attacking midfielder just behind the striker. If we sell him it will become our biggest own goal.
Just to clarify, before this spirals into another couple of pages of people stating he should know his place and not be asking for obscene wages. We do not have any reliable source to support the story that he asked for big money, just clickbait rage merchants throwing out big numbers to stir up the fanbase. The more reliable sources have been fairly consistent that whilst we are talking to him about a new deal it is totally amicable and nothing either side is in any rush to conclude as we have him under contract for 3 more years.

I think thats more down to the fan base (probably every fan base) flying towards extremes rather than nuance. I never got the impression that people weren't ready to negotiate. No one really knows what is going on in negotiations. Thought he was on 250k pr week? And then the 25% reduction as a possibility. If not, my bad. 200k is still way, way, way too much! He's asking for £300k per week?

I think it’s often forgotten that Bruno is nearly 31 and Mainoo is nearly 20 so one is coming towards the end of his career and one is at the start of his career, I think alongside a ball winner like Ugarte or longer term a powerful athletic box to box like Kone we’d see Mainoo take the role Bruno does as our orchestrator. And yet, where do we play him?
Where does he fit in modern athletic PL football?
He’s obviously supremely talented but where does he fit?
Also looked today like he was already gone in that interview after the game.
400,000 a week he wants get your facts right or don’t bother postingHe's asking for £300k per week?
He only played 34 minutes in an unnatural position. In that time we scored 3 goals.Good goal. but did very little apart from that.
This I agree withThe idea that he should get £180k a week when Amad is on £120k is crazy.
On the flipside, it's ridiculous that he plays such a big part in the first team and is on a reported £10k or £20k.
He's 19, of course he's not ready, how many 19 year old midfield players have you ever seen who were ready?Only place I see for him in the team is Casemiro's role. I dont know if he is ready yet.
If club thinks he is not ready, they might sell him and buy someone else and will help our FFP too.
If FFP is not an issue, we should extend his contract.
