A player that won't improve our play because we don't NEED him like new gk. In the same way we don't need a new left winger, new no 10 or new backup striker.
The players were being linked with early on seriously worry me. We NEED top striker, new gk and midfield partner for Casemiro.

Its a huge worry for me too. We are linked to a CB, which is not as pressing as some will have you believe, the midfielder we are being heavily linked with has played their best football in the same position as Bruno.

While it may not be as pressing, that period where both our starting CBs were out was absolutely horrendous and could've destroyed our season if it happened a few weeks earlier. While we are looking good at CB, if you can strengthen it with the Serie A Defender Of The Year on a buyout clause it gives us a definite boost and safety at that position. Varane isn't getting younger either and he's been injured a lot. Getting Kim in also does not mean that we can already forget about the rest. It's June 5th, there's going to be plenty of transfers both in and out.

Serie A defender of the year, good age, has both size and pace.....sounds like a smart move by EtH

We don't have money to fill the cavernous voids in the first eleven and to get a backup cd that we don't need as of now.

We do if we sell Henderson, McTominay and Maguire. There's a thread in the Utd forum that explains the financial situation in more detail.

Also Mount will fill a void if ETH intends to change the setup and move away from 4231 in certain games and allows us to have options depending on who we play.

You can't trust us raising money with the outs. I would say during the period when Varane and Martinez were out the main problem was still our inability to score goals and controlled matches. I would say cdm and the defence are our strongest department this season. If the funds are there to get ourselves a class striker or 2 and a class cm, a goalkeeper as well as a class CB like this lad then by all means I will be happy.

Also, how to you pronounce this player's name because in my head it's "Mingey"

it’s pronounced “kim mon-hay” but with the “h” pronounced all spanish, like the “h” in gea for david de gea.

If he's half as aggressive, quick and combative as he looks on those compilation videos then that's one heck of a tough centre back partnership he'll have with Martinez.

I do wonder if the manager would prefer Timber though for his superior passing range.

Buy both and sell AWB, Maguire and Lindelof I say

We need to stop signing CBs every summer. Improve the goalkeeper and our CB problem goes away.

It's not so much about raising money with sales, more about freeing up money FFP wise that we couldn't spend if they remained on the roster. I'm not a fan of our defense when Martinez-Varane or just one of them isn't there. Maguire takes out all the tempo with his endless indecisiveness on the ball and playing Shaw at CB is a waste since Malacia just hasn't shown he's good enough so getting Kim in would help us immensely. Lindelof did fine, but Kim is a much, much better player so I'm fully on board to get this deal done as fast as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if Kim-Martinez would be our starting duo either.

I agree with you on everything else as well but I'm confident we'll be active this summer.

Maybe we’re building out the squad and getting the easier signings in before it’s announced we have masses of oil money (for the bigger signings)

More of a Yip Yap Jaap Stam

for me at least, he reminds me a little of him.

I could see that as well...Stam and Vida were similar in style but Stam was slightly better on the ball. Both guys were tough as nails and enjoyed the physical battles.

that's not even close to being true....but yes it would be nice to have a keeper who's a bit better with his feet and more consistent shot stopper

Agreed. Varane is great, but injuries are catching up with him now. You need 4 CBs when going for multiple trophies and we are selling one of them (maguire). Also ETH might decide to change things up and even use a back three ala City. Martinez can step into midfield from the back ala Stones. Who knows, just have to trust ETH vision and plan.

Haven't given that 3 man defense a lot of thought but now that you mention it I would love to see how that would work out. Would be cool if they mess around with it in pre season.

I'm not worried, I feel Kim is being signed as Varane's long-term replacement, who doesnt strike me as someone who will play deep into his 30's with his injury record.

For those saying we don't need a defender, if we plan on playing with 2 no.8s,, we'll need a high line and excellent one on one defenders who are good in transition defense. That's why I think we will sign him. (Not that I know how good he is, I'm just saying that's the reason for signing him imo)
