Matic is our best passer out of Fred and McTominay. So Ole would be correct to say Matic was the best player. However, he just cannot cope playing against high-intensity pressing teams these days. In pre-season high pressing is not normally used due to these games being just preparations for the upcoming season.
 
I might be in a minority here who think Dalot is a better player going forward than Wan Bissaka. Obviously, the latter is the better defending. If the defensive unit works well with the acquisition of Varane there could possibly be plenty of games for Dalot when he would have less responsibility in certain games.

I'd agree with this. There was talk for a while that Dalot might actually be better as a winger
 
Honestly can't say I care that much what we decide to do, Trippier or Dalot. I'm very happy with AWB as first choice. And extremely excited to see Laird come into the picture in a couple of seasons. Whoever we use as back-up will be just that.

I’ve always liked the ‘idea’ of Dalot.

With Varane in the back line we shouldn’t be so risk averse & I’d like to see him given more opportunities.

AWBs lack of offensive ability can be stifling at times & it’s hardly as if we keep plenty of clean sheets with him in it, AWB is an exceptional 1-v-1 defender but his positional play isn’t something to write home about.

Doesn't matter if you can pass under no pressure - when the real games happen he can't move his feet fast enough. Pereira was probably better than Matic yet it means nothing.

Shit management keeping Dalot and not trying to upgrade/put pressure on AWB.
 
We still persist in not listening when told a price. Coming soon: a bid of £7.50p for Neymar, followed by shock that it's been turned down. What made our geniuses think an £18m bid at the last moment was going to work? Either we want him or we don't (and yes, I've been lectured on "negotiating" already). Atletico made it clear what they wanted (and it might have been bonkers or not, given your thoughts), just as Dortmund have done in the past - even we have turned down bids we felt were too low for players
 
Go back for him in January.

Rice and Haaland in the summer.

Every single club in the world makes it clear they want more money than they'll actually accept. Dortmund took significantly less than what they demanded from the beginning of the window. I think you've been going to the Phil Wang School of Negotiating.

Absolutely true.. except PSG refusing to sell Mbappe which was a total outlier
 
The club were sensible not pursuing this one for silly money.

We spent 50 million pounds on AWB. He's shown some improvement. Maybe not enough, but if he's not good enough this season then we need to identify a long term option or at least long term competition. Not an aging player that will be done in a few years. That method was okay for striker because there's so few but if we can't find and develop our own RB then we've got serious problems in recruitment.
 
I think we'll be back in for him, the interest seemed genuine and it sounds like Trippier was up for it too.

There are a lot of conflicting reports over whether his contract expires in 2022 or 2023 but if he's available on a free next year I'm almost certain we'll make a move.

I think its 2023
He signed initially till 2022 with a clause that if he played 20 games last season this would trigger an extension till 2023

He will be 31 in a few weeks as well so i dont see us spending much on him - and 33 pretty much as soon as he is available on a free - personally I have high hopes for Laird who I hope to see back with us next year

Reports in Spain that we will go back for him in January. I wish we’d spend more energy trying to bolster our midfield rather than replacing a back-up RB with another one.

Because the budget is not unlimited, one buy affects how much money we have for another buy. There are no reports that we are going for a midfielder in January. Also we officially for Trippier on deadline day and nobody else.

We were after Trippier all summer and signed other players in the mean time. If we sign Trippier it'd be for £20m max if that and by all accounts the loan deal we agreed with Dortmund for Dalot was 5m EUR fee with an option to buy so any 'impact' on this limited budget would be negligible as it would obviously be a 1 in for 1 out signing. Just because some shite papers haven't linked us with a midfielder doesn't mean we don't want one and won't sign one.

I don’t agree and I don’t think we should be wasting any time or money on the Trippier deal. Actions speak louder than words, we did not officially bid for any midfielder this summer (though we were linked with some), and we are clearly going back for Trippier in January.

Unless an injury crisis forces our hand, I don’t think we’re going for a midfielder until next summer.
 
With Ronaldo in the team, you need good crossing. I can see why Ole would want Trippier over AWB in certain games.
 
To be fair, Trippier's cross -> Ronaldo's heading goal could be a love story. On top of that imagine if the score is 1-1 or 0-0 and you want a goal, you put Trippier, Cavani, Ronaldo on the pitch and that could be the solution. But I doubt he will be available in January.

I agree with you, but Trippier seems a very doable transfer in January and it would make sense for all parties. According to Andy Mitten, who is close to Trippier's family, despite reports that Trippier has 2 years left, he actually has the option to leave on a free in 10 months.

I think when that DM/CM comes in, it'll be a big deal in the summer. I can't see another "Bruno" happening unless we are struggling badly to qualify for the top 4. Less so if Pogba commits by then too because he can fill in.
 
Maybe this will encourage AWB take on players more and put in a cross more often, he's obviously not as good at it as trippier but he got some assists from crosses last season, we just need to encourage him a bit more. On the other hand Dalot could provide some early crosses but yeah, he's very inconsistent in it..
 
Probably kneejerk after what AWB did tonight but can see us going for him in January.

Even if United do sign him, I think it's merely for cover. I think the move makes sense if we had a manager who would make the tactical changes to start Tripper over AWB in games where we need a more attacking minded full back on the right, or bring him on for his crossing as a sub to change the game. There's been times when Bissaka has looked he's got nothing left in the tank and yet he starts every game.

I feel like most games we need a more attacking right back though. Would help Sancho and Greenwood so much more and balance us out so we're not all down the left and predictable.

i agree with you, but do you see really Ole starting one or the other based on the matchup, or just throwing AWB out there every week and Trippier sitting on the bench getting a cup game here and there.
