Why are we so hell bent on Trippier? What does he offer that we lack? Is he going to sit on the bench or replace AWB? 31 yrs old, decent player but didn't quite pull amazing feats with the Spurs week in week out.

All this talk about Trippier with Pogba unsettled and our need for a DM has left me scratching me head.

You are not alone. A good but not exceptional right back and a player wanting £350k a week that hasnt been consistently top quality in any of his five seasons here is baffling when we have McFred, Matic and VDB as the central midfielders. Surely we should be lookign to improve the first eleven rather than strengthen our bench for 10 games a season

These are the same people who wanted Dalot play as a RW because he does stepovers.
Just because AWB slide tackles does not mean he can be a CB or DM. It's insane.

I would go so far as to say that the amount of times he depends on a slide tackle is a big reason as to why I don't think he'd make a good CB.

You are not alone. 'For 10 games a season' assumes that Wan Bissaka won't pick up a lengthy injury - which you can never guarantee, which is why top clubs need a quality alternative in each position. We currently don't have that at RB - Williams, Dalot, Laird aren't at the standard where you'd want them to be regular starters week in, week out if AWB is out.

It also assumes that Trippier - picked by England ahead of AWB at the Euro's, and a current La Liga champion - won't come in and perform so well that he becomes our first choice RB and improves that position. Or, if not, at least comes in and provides genuine competition that lifts AWB's performances in the way Telles is credited with helping improve Shaw's consistency.

The Pogba / CM situation doesn't override the importance of improving the RB options - anymore than it did bringing in Sancho or Varane to address those positions. We needed to improve about 4 areas. We've succeeded with two. Trippier would be the 3rd if it happens. The CM situation, whether Pogba stays or leaves, is the 4th. It's been complicated by the protracted deals with Sancho and Varane, and the Pogba discussions. The Trippier deal - if there is one - isn't holding it up.

If he makes it clear he wants to go to Utd which is bound to happen at some point in the window they WON'T have the leverage to let an asset like him leave for free when they can get most if not all their money back for him(£15-20m)

He is. The issue is right now the fee is high so Utd are doing what they always do, dragging things to the last days to drive the price down.
If he was available for £15-20M early in the window we'd have signed him by now

I think that's generally the case a lot tbh. These deals are usually 90% agreed and just waiting for certain things to happen before we even hear of serious interest.

Yes, I'm thinking along the same track. Neves would have signed for Arsenal by now also. Think Fernandes wants him in the side, and he is waiting for us. We have to sell players first, but I think we will see these 2 come here before deadline day.

The 2 teams are completely different. Real Madrid are in financial woes, check their spending over the last 5 years and check how much they have reduced their wage bill in recent years too.

Varane leaving was no shock to Perez. They offered him a contract nearly a year ago (Nov 2020) with barely any extra wages or incentives. Varane wanted his last big contract and both parties knew they wouldn't make an agreement approx 6 months ago.
Real Madrid told clubs that they will listen to offers for all their players.

They got Ramos and Varane off their wage bill which was huge and received money for a player who was 100% leaving for free next summer.

I consider Athletico Madrid to have a much lower wage bill and they want to get as much money from United as possible, Utd will wait and play the chess game, plus United need to move on some players to get them off the wage bill too.

Paying a dollar over 15m for Tripper is madness.

Very familiar with this player. He’s predominantly a right back. Very experienced, very quick, decent defensively but even better going forwards. Takes a great free kick. Not an improvement on AWBeast but would be a very useful squad player for us.

I think Trippier is someone that ticks a lot of boxes for us that’s why.

- A very good backup right back which we currently don’t have
- Wants to come to the club and would be happy to be a backup
- Proven quality in the premier league.
- He has good attacking qualities for a full back. Particularly crossing. This will be one of the key reasons we want to sign him because he will be most useful in games at Old trafford where teams are parking the bus. We struggled with this last season when AWB didn’t offer anything going forward when breaking a low block team.
- He would be relatively cheap

Agree with a lot of this but he certainly isn’t very quick.

Matty Cash would probably cost too much right? Think he is the type of profile of fullback I'd look for.

Whoever we get would have to be happy with not playing regularly. Someone like Cash would be too expensive for a squad player and also for him to be happy to just be a backup when he’s currently thriving as a regular in the premier league.

Aren't the quoted transfer fees for him around EUR40m?
