Apart from his crossing I don't see how his forward play is going to make this staggering difference some claim. The crosses are nice, mainly when Cavani is playing, probably less of a factor otherwise.

But other than that he's neat and tidy but hardly the most dynamic player in the world. AWB has a lot more pace, if we could coax him into making more runs without the ball that would allow Sancho more space. Or if they want to let AWB go then he may get plenty of open space to get into more dangerous positions as well now there is as bigger threat from the right flank, potentially. Mason is still very much learning the game, the runs, the positioning, and can be quiet which makes the job harder for a full back.
I saw two seasons of Liverpool fullbacks crossing the ball at every opportunity and causing havoc. Crosses and cutbacks are really underated. AWB will still be first choice, Trippier as back up is amazing.

I think if Cavani plays a lot then it could be a big factor. I just don't think the likes of Rashford, Greenwood and Martial sniff out a goal very well to think it's going to be a massive source of goals.

Even Shaw struggles to put out massive numbers of goal contributions and he generally has good quality so I don't see Trippier coming in and lighting the place up. But you never know.

I think that Liverpool side was slightly different, not many teams have managed those numbers from full back.

I dont think you sign Trippier for better assist numbers. I think you sign him to make the side better in possession down the right flank. We've just bought a world class attacking midfielder to play down the right and unlike Rashford, for example who's a turn and burn specialist, Sancho's the type of player who needs a lot of touches, and by extension someone technically gifted to act as a foil. Right now we dont have a right back with that profile.

Could Dalot not do a similar job? I think Trippier was attractive as a 20m signing. 40m is a lot for a decent player but probably not a great one.

Ole must be thinking about a back 3-4-3 for this signing to make much sense. Perhaps Trippier would play as a RWB and AWB as part of a back 3.

I can't imagine either AWB or Trippier being happy sharing the RB position in a back 4.

It has been said before, that AWB would be a terrible CB. His weaknesses would be highlighted more in the centre while nullifying his key strengths.

We just signed Varane for 34m.

We are NOT signing Trippier for 40m.

Our negotiating team is now finally working as they should.

It is due to Covid. I am sure Sancho and Varane would have cost more in a world where Covid didn't happen.

I think the Trippier deal depends on Dalot,if we can sell him then we will buy Trippier.
Think not is the other way round. There is no chance AC Milan will buy Dalot this summer. They want a loan, we would like an obligation to buy included. However, I don't think we would entertain him going anywhere if we can't get Trippier.

So do I. I don’t think it’s just for Sancho’s benefit though.

People may not like it, but we tend to look our best as a team with two box to box workhorses in midfield, regardless of their undoubted lack of creativity. That creativity needs to come from somewhere, so both fullbacks need to be constantly looking to drive the ball forward. Shaw does this and has done for most of his career. AWB has moments of being very good going forward, but he’s nothing like as comfortable in possession as Shaw and I can’t ever see him offering that constant forward threat.

It wouldn’t really matter if we were more creative through the middle, but we aren’t. Simply signing Tripper to be a right sided Shaw seems the easiest way forward.

AWB has good technique and ball retention. It's not one of his weaknesses. He has rather poor movement in attack and even when given a lot of space, he's not much of a threat. I can fully understand why we're in for Trippier, but I feel we'd be better off investing in midfield first. I don't think fullback position needs that much attention at this moment.

Atletico might as well keep him, nobody other than United are in for him and the rumoured 8~ish million bid is about market value for a 31 year old full back, maybe 12 million tops.

If they have dreams of pocketing 30 million from his sale its a waste of time because it isn't gonna happen.

I fear we won't be buying Trippier at the rumoured prices being quoted.. which is such a shame.. not only for us but for the player too who seems desperate to join us... If only Simeone would be open to a straight swap for Dalot :)

Ditto, I find him technically sound. His issues lie more with positional sense and his defensive abilities.
I'd agree with that. He likes to get forward and looks like a traditional winger to me. Technically he looks OK (and as if could develop) but he's much weaker defensively than any of the other full backs, doesn't even have the gritty combativeness of Williams. I always thought Jose bought him because he'd been touted as a future prospect by his Portuguese contacts.

Well what are you referring to as technical ability then if not ability in possession?
So a full back having less touches per game automatically means he's not technically sound? Damn actually seeing him play. Stats can't tell you that.

Using stats alone might tell you AWB was better attacking wise than Luke Shaw.

Dalot averages 40 passes and 0.7 key passes per 90. Trippier averages 55 and 1.2 key passes. He's better technically than Dalot.

Huh?

1. That does not show that someone is better technically by any metric. I just checked and Wan Bissaka averages 54 a game

2. No one said that Dalot is better technically than Trippier.

This must be the worst "confirmed in our heads" signing ever. Is there even any tier 1 traction anywhere that says we in for him? I know we have been camped out in the Varane mostly recently, but would be good to get some muppet juices flowing, right now its as dry as a nun's fanny marie biscuit!!

Almost all the backlines that were popping up in the Varane thread had Trippier included like it was a done deal
It’s Muppet season! AWB is fantastic defensively, with Sancho ahead of him we won’t need him to attack so much.

That being said I do think his attacking limitations are significant, and I would love to see us get an attacking RB. Full backs still have the most time and space on the ball. I was a huge fan of what Dani Alves did with the position at Barca, lead the league in assists from RB, incredible.

If indeed Trippier is an attacking full back it is worth going for him . In modern football you need two attacking full backs so long as he is not too expensive. We dont need to wait until we find a DM.
20- 25 million would not be too bad.

Every reliable journalists has said we are in for him. The issue is it's not worth discussing unless At. Madrid reduce their price. We aren't paying 30m for him.

Not sure I’d class AWB as excellent defensively anymore.

He’s the best one on one tackler in the league but he loses his man on set pieces/crosses so many times he’s become a bit of a liability.
