After seeing the outrage on Twitter and in here I've just seen the challenge. Never a red. I actually can't believe the enormous over reaction.
Yeah, but only in exceptional circumstances. Not sure if they've used it yet. Pretty certain it was introduced after that horrible Wigan winger broke some Newcastle player's leg a few years back and got away with a yellow.
Was a red for me. Tackles like that are utterly brainless and to stop the counter.. a foul half as powerful would have had the same effect of bringing him down. No need for that force or to aim for top of leg like that.
i was expecting to see a far far worse version of Murphy's studs up challenge on Gundogan. horrible studs in challenge where the leg bends due to the sheer force and aggression, thats what the reaction led me to believe i was about to witness.

It’s late, reckless, high and hard - again, only doing it injure him. Clear red card, just like Rooney against West Ham (?) a few years ago - because of the unecessart force. You are allowed to stop an attack with a cynical foul and get a yellow card, you do not have a free-pass to tackle as hard as you want.

Yeah pretty much. It will only get used when there's a bad enough challenge and the press decide that, as it wasn't committed by an English player, they'll whip up an outrage about it.
And it's no coincidence the challenge comes moments after his team miss a last second penalty. Clearly he was pissed off and took that out on de Bruyne.

I must admit before I've seen it I thought it was studs up or something tackle. It was bad but not that bad as it was portrayed.
The challenge in and of itself was bad but not a horror tackle. What was shocking though was how late it was.

It was dangerous (attacking the standing leg), but not as bad as I thought at first. Happy for KdB that he is unharmed after all.

That was a hard take but if logic is to give cards to those who stop the counter then fernandinho should receive yellow card every game.
Honestly reading this thread expecting a leg breaker. Thats not. Yellow card for certain.
Probably an unpopular opinion but for me any "tackle" that amounts to a clearly deliberate act of fouling the player, with no intent at playing the ball, should always be a red.
The sport would be better without allowing players a free pass to cheat to stop an attack.
Some would regard it as dedication to win, not cheating. Imagine the bollocking a player would get off both the fans and the manager if not clipping opposition player who is leading a highly dangerous counter attack.
Imo they wouldn't get a bollocking if people knew a straight red was in play.
Straight red for them tackles would ruin the game in my opinion. It's gone soft enough as it is, the uproar over the tackle today is bad enough.
I'm sure anyone who performs a professional foul or a tactical foul in a counter situation should always get a yellow. That tackle was needlessly reckless and endangered a fellow professional on top of that. That warrants a red in my book.

I also think refs are giving fouls for so many things these days that really should not be fouls. Have seen so many players win the ball, catch a player and be given red. Or yellow. Or even a foul when there has just been a bit of contact and no foul committed. Sometimes when the ball and foot is a little above the ground, which really ought to be ok but somehow isn't any more.

Thought it was a horrific tackle based on some tweets & the way people reacted. Now I've seen it, it's not that bad & a yellow card is the right decision.
It is just because it is KDB. If it was Mangala, no one would care about it
