80m€ is too much for Kepa.Big deal for Athletic although the money is not exactly their priority.
If Chelsea knew that Courtois didn't want to renew why didn't they fix the GK position before?

They've been all over the place in the last 4 years. My guess is they thought they could stick with Courtois another season, but then he threatened to not play for them anyways(and with 1 year left on his contract and no international competition in the summer, a realistic threat) and they panicked. Honestly Courtois could have pushed the boat earlier, and they might have signed Alisson instead, and we wouldn't have had to give them Kovacic, which we could have used as a make weight for other deals...or sold outright for 50-60mil...

Oh well. Kepa is great and they got a fix for this season with Kovacic. So not the worst for them

In a vacuum, that doesn't exist. That said, for Chelsea, in the situation they were in? Absolutely. It was Kepa for €80m, or Caballero.

Similar situation with you and Alisson really. Though Alisson's coming off a monster season and is Brazil's starter with quite a bit of experience at the top level. Still

Along the same vein - Courtois is a bit of a skeezeball and this is actually the reason why he and KdB don't like each other. Courtois slept with KdB's girlfriend whilst both were at Chelsea and as a result KdB dumped her.

More on that: KDB cheated on his gf, she found out, dumped him and promptly threw herself at Courtois, who knew everything and still banged her anyways.

Yep. Would be a free transfer in 12 months. Getting £35 million and Kovacic for a year is not totally dreadful.
