Ireland Players Don't Want Keane


Niall Quinn said all 22 members of the Irish squad believe Roy Keane should not be allowed to return to the Far East.

Keane yesterday said he wanted to return and Mick McCarthy had left the door open for the midfielder to apologise.

However, the rest of the Irish squad intervened by issuing a statement.

Quinn claimed it had come out too early and should have followed a press conference from McCarthy.

The veteran Sunderland striker explained word "had filtered around that Mick (McCarthy) had offered an olive branch".

Quinn said: "At breakfast time Mick called a meeting. He left the meeting and asked us to chat amongst ourselves."

When it came to a vote, though, Quinn revealed: "All 22 voted unanimously to back him (the manager).

"There was no lobbying. Every single player was asked for their opinion and we came out of the meeting with the statement as you see it."

Quinn was mystified how the players' statement had come out too soon.

"It came out way too soon. In some ways we have to apologise for that."
