Kalidou Koulibaly

I like Stones but as @BigDunc9 alluded to if you were getting 50m it seems a no brainer to replace him with a cheaper but good alternative like Koulibaly and we can improve the overall squad. The takeover kind of means that this probably wouldn't be needed though.

Would would he want to move from Napoli to Everton, that is a downwards move, he will be playing CL football if he stays also battling for the title. As a defender surely you would think twice about going to Everton playing under Roberto Martinez

The PL money and exposure is probably worth it, to be fair. At 24, if he has just one successful season under them he'll be moving on up the ladder quickly.

PL clubs are going to be linked with just about every player on the planet because of the money swimming about. United have been linked with every CB that still have both their legs.

It's his second good season in Italy.

He can do better than Everton.

Of course, but the one successful season at Everton will garner more interest than two successful ones in Italy. I don't know how interested we are but I imagine we'll probably unsuccessfully chase the likes of Laporte/Varane/Marquinhos/Stones, but were Koulibaly to have a successful season at Everton I imagine not only us but pretty much all the big sides would be in for him. That's sort of my point. Maybe I'm overthinking it. BPL teams tend not to go for Serie A often. I'm not sure what the deal was with Darmian too; whether we went for him over Clyne or went for Darmian because negotiations were quicker/easier.

I don't think that's true. Clearly clubs are looking at players from France or Italy. It's simply cheaper. Also, if he stays put, he's most likely playing Champions League football next season, he'll get enough attention there. I sort of get your point, but I think he's done enough to garner the interest of the top clubs around Europe.

Excellent again for Napoli tonight, he's a monster physically and so quick across the ground, plus his passing is quality, really suited to the PL in my view.

Di Marzio gives me a bit of hope that this may be true given it's a Serie A based player.

We appear to be linked with every eligible centre back on the planet.

Hopefully that is due to it being common knowledge that we are after a CB, rather than journos and rumour mongers just looking at our defense an thinking "They have to be, right?" I mean it's not even about replacing Blind back there now IMO, it's about having a set of CB's to actually compete and rotate as the other 2 senior options are always injured.

It is this guy and Laporte today, yesterday we were on the point of getting Miranda from Inter Milan. If it isn't CB's it every type of midfielder under the sun. We seem to be on the point of buying each and every one as well. If true, we won't be moaning about a little squad again.

Also they tell us the De Gea is staying, then we are linked to lots of goalies.

It does seem that due to United drawing so much interest that any story is a good story for the sites, I try to see which ones become a recurring story from the slightly better sources.

If our 2 options are Stones and Koulibaly, who would you sign?

Koulibaly, who allegedly is very good on the ball himself.

He's confident on the ball but nowhere near as comfortable as Stones who is extremely natural and composed on the ball.. to a level that you'd expect from Pique or Ramos. Stones is immature yes but potentially one of the top ball players from the back.. defensively there are big question marks.

Koulibaly has a very good right foot but is very error prone on his weaker foot.. I admire the fact he'd rather use it than pass back though and he can keep working on strengthening it. As a defender though he pretty impressive from what I have seen.. Mobile for a big guy, can defend on his own, decent anticipation and positioning, covers ground well.. good recovery pace and can be a beast in the air. He looks like the type of guy Liverpool would want Sakho to be... but isn't.

Wouldn't mind either here tbh.. I definitely think Koulibaly has the athleticism to make it in English football. Darmian for me looked pedestrian even in Serie A games so we shouldn't use him as a yardstick to measure defenders from that league by.

That's strange you say his weaker foot is so weak because doesn't he play on the left side? And yeah, I really do see the 'Sakho if he was actually good' type of vibes.

Yeah he plays on the left but he's prone to making gaffes with his left.. which most CBs would be prone to if on the left side. He looks like someone that is still learning his trade in that position.

He makes them because he is a very brave player on the ball and tries to take responsibility for playing it out rather than go back to keeper. I don't think it is terminal weakness though. . he looks like he can sometimes hit some good passes with it but is just inconsistent. Overall though I'd class him as confident on the ball.. his first touch and dribbling is above average for a CB and his right foot can hit some excellent long balls.

Yes yes, I've always wanted our own Sol Campbell bull kind of CB. This guy also seem to be extremely clever. Had some moves that would make the best CM/AM look in awe.

Of course if Aymeric Laporte is off the market for now, City will still be looking for CB's. Likely the same ones we are looking for.

Having a hard time pronouncing his surname.

For some reason I pronounce it with something similar to an Indian English accent and really thick "L"s. (Always done it since playing FM through the years.) I'm sure that's not "correct", but it works a treat for me :D

I'm curious to see what players Mourinho rates around world football. Without CL football, he won't have first choice. Lots of rumours of Atletico players and you could see how Mourinho would rate them based on style of play and their dissection of Chelsea in the CL in 2014.

He doesn't have the passing ability that Blind has but it has other attributes. He plays a little bit like Hummels. Strong in the air, not too fast but anticipate the strikers, good long passes to the attackers. He would be a good signing and wouldn't cost too much compared to Stones.

What i like about Koulibaly's passing is that he often plays it forward. He likes to pass between the lines to players further up the field and he is good at it.

The 24-year-old has a contract until 2019, but he is clearly not satisfied about the current terms and is thinking of moving on.

“I had two positive seasons and now there are some offers on the table,” Koulibaly told L'Equipe. “I'll choose for the best, not only from a financial point of view, but also in terms of the sport.

“Many high-profile clubs want me and I haven't had any sign from Napoli. Talk for a renewal is at a dead end and the club never wanted to talk to us about it.

“I'm under the impression that I'll leave. Napoli aren't giving any signs of life, they vanished. I want to take one step up in my career and I'll probably do that by playing abroad.”

Azzurri Coach Antonio Conte will be taking the reins of Chelsea next season, and he could make for a useful contact.

“I haven't spoken with him, but I could do that soon. If nothing happens with Napoli I'll start getting in touch with other clubs. Yes, I could adapt myself to the Premier League.”

I hope we're in for him. Inb4 "what about Bailly?" I hope Bailly is predominantly used as a right back.
