Just felt an Earthquake ....

I believe the advice is to stand in a doorway in case of aftershocks.

Must have been quite a scare.

Everyone on social media seems to be joking about this, but 4.8 isn't that weak. Were the shakes strong enough to cause hanging items to potentially fall down?

Has there ever been an major earthquake in that area before? Don't remember reading about one or that the area is frequent for earthquakes.

It wasn't weak. The whole building was swaying and all the light fixtures started moving.

I don't think we're anywhere near any fault lines. One of the conspiracy theorist here thinks the government is testing missiles.

I think there's a fault line that runs down Broadway. NYC is due for a big one. There's a lot of old brick buildings that wouldn't take much to break up.

A long, long time ago.

There's apparently quite a few fault lines in the NE US.

I think they should update the evacuation process in highrise.

If I'm there i wont bother walking down the stair for fear of stampeding. In the case the earthquake is big enough to topple building i doubt being on the ground help much.

I'd take my chance up there rather than down there

That's what I thought. That'd be scary enough to experience. On the bright side, at least this earthquake wasn't so strong, but the region should start preparing for potentially stronger earthquakes down the line.

Can’t remember there being any earthquakes in New York before everyone got stabbed with the covid jab.

i slept through it...woke up with the big alert, which was apparently 30 minutes after the quake

We had a 4.3 in the PNW in October last year - felt like a gentle rocking to sleep. A 4.8 is about 3 times stronger, so I'm glad to hear there's no major damage around!

Major, no. They happen a fair bit but are mostly weak quakes in the 3-4 range. Noticable but not dangerous. Of course, we aren't used to them so they are a bit freaky.
