They were always planning on playing him from the start. It's why he chose Dortmund.
Dortmund for sure needed his player type more than United, but between Witsel, Can, Delaney, Brandt, Reyna or even Dahoud who all want to play in CM it wasn't a foregone conclusion that he would start immediate and I wouldn't be surprised either if Favre went back to more experienced options for the time being when the opponents are of higher quality in the upcoming games.
Reyna has been playing on the wings/attacking forward and Can has been playing centre back during pre season. So already that leaves a lot less competition. Bellingham isn't the average 17 year old. He is ready to play already in their starting 11.
Can has been playing as a CB during pre-season, because Favre played two seperate teams, so he needed two sets of CBs and because Zagadou is injured. The way it has played out at the moment neither he or Reyna are in direct competition with Bellingham, but if Zagadou was fit Can would probably be playing in midfield and if Favre was using a 433, like he tried all pre-season, then Reyna would probably compete for a CM spot as well.
How did he play in the game against Gladbach and what type of midfield role was he played in?
I'm not sure what type of midfielder he is or Dortmund plan him to be, but certainly something to watch from an England perspective .

It's the only way the can somewhat cut the financial distance to Bayern. Commercially Bayern makes like way more money than any other team in the league but Dortmund is making a lot of money by buying young talented players and selling them for loads of money. The problem with this of course is that with all the money they make from sales they are also losing quality every time they sell one of their best young players so while financially this might be good for them, I don't think it will see them win any trophies as long as they have to run this business model, which in return will make them less attractive for bigger sponsoring contracts.

I was literally about to post this. Having considered the starts he's had tor Dortmund it was the correct choice for his career. There's a reason we will continually struggle for these breakthrough talents early on because clubs like Dortmund provide the perfect infrastructure for them to grow.

BuLi is a league designed to showcase young talents. Some of them will turn out to be great, some of them won't but you need to see them in different environments to gauge properly.

There is a lot of overrating of young players.. A lot of praise for not really doing anything.
Dortmund played a strong side against a newly promoted team, kept 75% of the ball and Hummels scored both their goals.
Obviously there is nothing bad about making 100 passes.. but hold the praise till he does something actually impressive.
I said CL knockout because Bayern are probably a tougher opponent than your average CL knockout side.
You can praise him in relation to his age. Nothing wrong with that. It's a good performance for his age. I don't think it's more elaborate than that

Since the game was mentioned here I thought I'd share this. Don't expect anything spectacular if you watch it. Being as calm, reliable and clever in some of the subtle things while playing in CM, where he's usually surrounded by opposition is still quite impressive for his age though.
I am surprised of how confident and mature he plays at his age. I assumed he would probably be 3rd or 4th choice but instead he already got some playtime in. It seems like it was a good move for both sides. Him getting game time and Dortmund getting central player who area some tempo into the play unlike Witsel who is very strong at securing the ball, but also rather slow at keeping the game going. Thus Jude brings something to the table against the lesser teams.
In addition the injuries in Dortmunds defense, the departure of Hakim and the addition of meunier had them switch back to 4-2-3-1 instead of having 3 defenders. Which adds more importance to the centre.
And last but not least it doesn't force Brandt back to the 8. As much as I like the player, he isn't defensive oriented enough and needs to be on the 10.
The only question mark is Guerreiro on the left defender position. Great offensive player but his defensive play can be lackluster. Especially with Hummels being the left central defender who likes to occasionally move forward.

He's playing just how we want Pogba to play in the midfield, and Pogba having the world class talent can if he wants, but Bellingham at 17 seemingly has more maturity than him.

Pogba has much more flair, and is more of a playmaker/CAM hybrid, who cna play deeper because of his immense passing. He could find a 80 yard pass over the whole pitch at 16, you could see his immense vision even back then. Bellingham is nowhere near that and simply he´s just a different type of player. He will be a good allround physical player and at 16 he´s got a good start to his career but let´s wait on him because there is always a chance he might be more of a Renato Sanches rather than "better version of Paul Pogba".
Clearly Bellingham got a chance to play senior football sooner than Pogba because he played for Birmingham where expectations were much lower than at united but once he can replicate what Pogba has done for Juve in his first few years, then we can judge him. Now it´s too soon and premature to shit your pants form 92% pass completion against Armenia fecking Bielefeld.
Pogba in his first years was so immensely talented and seemed destined for greatness, as does Bellingham, but in Pogba's case I think it's his mentality that won't allow it.
I remember when Pogba and Lukaku joined United they did an interview together, and I really liked Lukaku. Pogba on the other hand in that interview came across as an immature retard. Not just saying dumb things, as a lack of intelligence can be forgiven, but he was actually saying dumb things thinking they were cool. And that at age 23. Back then I already suspected he wouldn't reach his potential.
Bellingham on the other hand doesn't seem to have that characteristic, but things can change. I think he'll be alright.
