Except that he didn’t.
What did he do more than scoring the winner in a cup final, score in league cup final, community shield. Scored a lot of important goals in the league...what exactly did Mata actually do?

Just a far better player for us. Lingard came nowhere the level Mata displayed im his first few years (and that’s less an endorsement of Mata than it is a critique of how substandard Lingard has been.)

What a video, what a man. I'll miss seeing him in our shirt.

Who will claim the mantle of most handsome man in the team now!?

That’s a remarkable video.

It’s been said before how much he has enjoyed living in Manchester and that video emphasises it.

Would’ve loved nothing more than for Mata to experience the club at our peak.

The same guy it always was

As much as he never consistently reached his top level for whatever reason he is undeniably a very good guy.

Can picture him having something of a second wind in Spain.

Did we ruin him as well with how we utilized him :(

Great guy, wish him well in his next endeavors.

Think he was an absolutely shite signing but it’s very hard to dislike someone who clearly loves playing for the club.

Absolute class guy!
Hope he comes back to the club later, as the players at the club can learn a lot from him

Hope he comes back to us as something high up like VDS at Ajax.

The man is the epitome of footballing class. On the field and off.

The charity work, the love of football and just the way he handles himself is wonderful.

Classy, he should've left a few years ago but can't question his love for united. Better than them dickheads like Pogba chatting about feeling loved and Jesse Beanz lingard hanging out in Miami with Neymar. Always had respect for the fans.

Moments Mata. His engine may have been slowing down and we probably used him in the wrong position too often, but when on form and finding the right balance he could be the most elite player on the field.

Amazing its been 8.5 years. He leaves as the most likeable footballer we've ever had. A true professional, no question of his heart, a very natural footballer. Just a shame we never quite managed to get the best out of him on a consistent basis, but unlike Pogba its not down to lack of effort, just tactical fit.

We didn't use him well, or enough, and honestly the football IQ of the rest of the team wasn't at his level for us to make the most of him.

Clearly as a 30+ player who was already small and slow, it was the right time to go.

Cheers Juan.

A top class professional, player and more importantly man.

He's the only one i'm really sad about leaving this year. I will look forward to him playing regularly somewhere else and always cheer him on.

Hugs x

Ah lads. Lovely stuff. He should have been the only one of them allowed on social media. I believe every word of that. How often have you been able to say that this season? A great guy. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Best of luck to him.

Nice video. Best of luck to Juan wherever he goes next, should have a good few years left in him.

He's overdoing it IMO. I would get it if it was a homegrown lad (like Lingard) or a player like Evra who gave everything and won loads but for Mata it's too much.

He had more meaningful moments in his 2 years at Chelsea than his 8 years here. I'm not sure what all these memories of Mata are apart from a couple.

Lovely message from one of football's true nice guys.

What a professional and human being he is! That video was class and the way he deserved to say goodbye. Can tell he loved representing us and being apart of Manchester. He’s such a nice and classy guy who deserves nothing but the best from his career… hope he can start playing regular at his next club, hopefully at a big team who can win some more trophies with him. Adios Juan.

What a video. Hope he can have a good few years playing in his preferred position. I am pretty sure there will be a few clubs where his intelligence can be used quite well.

285 appearances, 51 goals, including plenty of memorable ones in our cup runs, goal in the FA Cup final, Juanfield etc.
Even when he played this season at his age you could clearly see his ability, classy player.
Could you name some of the memorable moments he had at Chelsea off the top of your head?

I said a couple and you mentioned them right here. I suppose you could add his free kick vs Juventus in Turin. Mata was a decent player for us during a bad spell for the club, I'm just a bit lost with the level of admiration he gets despite little to show for it on the pitch.

I remember a few but the most obvious is the corner for Drogba's late equaliser in Munich. He was Chelsea's player of the year two seasons in a row so I'm fairly certain if you ask Chelsea fans they will have a list of Chelsea memories much longer than any United fan could muster for his time here.

I was really excited when we signed him.. He had a couple of great seasons for Chelsea from what I remember...
Loved watching him play..

Its a shame we never had a system that got the best out of him.. we never really got to see him at his very best for any run of games..

Barely played in recent months so wont really be missed on the pitch, but I'll miss him..

The fact that he appears to be a truly wonderful person on top of being a footballer I really enjoyed watching makes it suck even more.

Best wishes..
Hugs
