The criticism in this thread is ridiculous. "Contributes nothing"? Give your head a wobble. We play much better fluid football with him on the pitch. Anyone can see that.

The attempt he missed seemed easy at first but wasn't as easy, I felt. Even had he lashed on to the ball, the angle was narrow as he is a leftie.

He had a pretty poor game in fairness, and hasn't been on form of late, but he's still popping up in the right places to score (or indeed miss) regardless. That's the good thing about Mata, you usually get something, even from his bad performances. That's frequently hailed as the mark of a good player, when you're so inclined to make that argument of course. When you're not you waste an awful lot of time trying to downplay it. As if scoring is a mere trifling matter, and quite frankly the least he can do.

Scored the difficult one. And missed the easy one. Juan. Also lucky to have stayed on the pitch for that tackle on Vardy. That gave me sadistic pleasure
For the left footed player the 1st one was the easier one. He had a very narrow angle to shoot at in the 2nd one

He sort of did
Wasn't an outstanding performance by any means, but it was far from a shit game.

Shocking foul aside it was a tidy little performance where he linked up well with Mkhi, Valencia and Herrera.

Took his goal well with a lovely piece of movement but overall wasn't great, lucky not to see red as well.

Lucky to stay on the pitch after that tackle tbh.

Like a poster stated above, poor performance masked by a goal.

You are probably right. But the time he had for the 2nd one was long enough to smash it low past Schmeichel. The 1st one was hard though. Near post finishes always are.

 Gosh that's horrible. The refs let us off the hook for a few studs-up challenges this season

Fecking Vardy diving trying to get him sent off, should face a 50 game ban for than, and have his full time WKD privileges stopped.

Thought he did fine tbh. Bad tackle but strong yellow for me, it was wreckless but not malicious.

I think Mata and Mkhitaryan have good chemistry, moreso than either of them two with say, Rashford.

He was pretty poor imo and he has been out of form for the last month or so. He's great poacher though and always seems to have at least one great chance per match. It's just the matter of taking them.

Had he not scored today he'd be getting criticised heavily on here. Just too slow and weak in my view.

Needs upgrading next season, simply a decent squad player.

I think we would have all been pissed off had it been 0-0 when he missed that ball over the top. Its like he didnt know what to do with it, either control and take it past the keeper, or just lash it first time.

Did enjoy his goal though. Beautiful stuff with Mkhi. Tbh though, id like to see him playing in games against lower opposition cos he normally pops up with a goal (and 4231 works).

Trying to kill Vardy can only be treated as a positive I imagine.

Mixed bag today, that second clear chance he had, I think he was surprised himself that he's no offside (made a perfect run) and got stuck in two minds, was visibly angry with himself. Still an improvement on last 2-3 games he had where he was pretty bad.

Was poor tonight but popped up with a goal. He's much better as a 10 than out wide.

Referee probably didn't send Mata off because every referee in the country has probably wanted to put Vardy on the ground in the last few years, the little gobshite. Mata and the ref probably high-fived in the tunnel at half time.

Good goal

His lack of creativity really annoys me though. Micki is like him but super charged.

Lucky not to be sent off, did Vardy head butt the ground afterwards .

Was at the game today and although I was at the other end of the stadium where I didn't have a great view I wondered what the feck he was doing with that 1v1 to make it 4-0. He didn't have a great game, just didn't really fit the system I felt.

Decent performance overall as it was buts of quality mixed in with a horrible challenge and a sitter.
Looking back I could only laugh at the sitter since it was 3-0 and that he didn't get send off I'm actually deep down delighted he made that challenge on Vardy as I hate him

Disagree. Mkhi provides the pace down the middle and Mata can make those runs. It works.

The problem with his game is that he has no individual threat on the ball when he is pressed/pressured. Unless you go diving in and give him the chance to nudge it past you, he has no dribbling pace or hold up play. So many times today, he lost the ball under little (physical) pressure.

I mean he has the ability but it seems to be a mentality thing for me. You can stand players up and make them respect your threat but he seems to favour the one-twos and lay it off to go for the final ball in the box thing.

It's great because we need runners/attack-the-box-first runs but his overall play is being badly exposed on the wing and with our style of play, when we get pressed.

I think the physicallity thing when it comes to Mata is always way overplayed. He does of course sometimes get overpowered by other players, but it's not like 5 or 6 times every game or anything, more like once. I mean, according to the stats, he got dispossesed twice, whilst Mhki got dispossesed 3 times, so it's much a muchness really.

Anyway, I thought he was ok overall... thught the booking was the correct decision, and he took his goal nicely. Overall, I still think its true that our best football comes when he's on the pitch. Not solely because of him of course, but his ball retention and movement makes others around him (like Tony V, Mhki, Herrera etc.) play better.

Not showing much in the game but still getting a goal, typical of Mata. We need him on the pitch because he's still our best corner taker.

Anyone got a vid of his miss which would have made it 4-0? I must have popped out the room as I didn't see it
